Husker Du- "Zen Arcade" LPx2 (SST)
Restock of this highly influential 1984 sonic punk/pop slab of wax. Double LP in gatefold sleeve. 5 stars on AMG.

Derek & The Dominoes- "Layla....." LPx2 (Atlantic)
Some of Clapton's best work to be sure. Helped along the way by Duane Allman & Bobby Whitlock. A special album in the history of rock.

Rose Tattoo- "Assault & Battery" CD ( Repertoire)
Rose Tattoo’s second studio assault, first released in 1981, remains a classic of Aussie power rock. The album’s barrage of songs includes the single release Rock’n’Roll Is Kin’, belted out by their heavily tattooed and bald headed front man Angry Anderson. Despite his aggressive image, Angry's lyrics occasionally reveal a more compassionate message than he’d care to admit! This was the Tatts’ last album to feature guitarist Michael Cocks, before being replaced by Robin Riley.

Screaming Trees- "Even If And Especially When" CD (SST)
Restock. The Trees played hard edged, properly produced psyche rock back in the late 80's & early-mid 90's. Led by the super cool vocals of Mark Lanegan (QOTSA/Gutter Twins etc.)

Mott The Hoople- "Brain Capers" CD (Atlantic)
Re-teaming with producer Guy Stevens, Mott the Hoople delivered the great forgotten British hard rock album with their fourth outing, Brain Capers. Stevens was a legendary rock & roll wildman and he kept Mott careening through their performances; they sound harder than ever, even dangerous at times. Fortunately, this coincided with Ian Hunter's emergence as a fantastic songwriter, as tuneful and clever as any of his peers. All these changes are evident from the moment Brain Capers kicks in with the monumental "Death May Be Your Santa Claus," a phenomenally pile-driving number that just seems inevitable. As it gives way to a cover of Dion's "Your Own Backyard," it becomes clear that Mott have pulled off the trick of being sensitive while still rocking. And that's not the end of it -- they ride an epic wave on the nine-minute "The Journey," pull off a love song on "Sweet Angeline," and generally rock like hell throughout the record. The most amazing thing about the album is that none of the songs really change character -- it's all straightforward hard rock, graced with Dylanesque organ -- but there are all sorts of variations on that basic sound, proving how versatile they are. It's a fantastic album, and stands as the culmination of their early years. When a record this confident and tremendous is stiffed, it's little wonder they thought about chucking it all in; and it isn't a surprise that, when they decided to continue, it was with a change in sound. They couldn't have topped this if they tried.

Strapping Young Lad- "94-06: Chaos Years" CD+DVD (Century Media)
Let's celebrate one of the most extreme and innovative Metal bands ever! 17 track fully re-mastered Best Of CD plus a 100 minutes long DVD containing the entire Download UK Festival show from 2006 (42 minutes), liner notes, rare live footage, all the promo clips and the brand-new Almost Again video.

Alvin Lee- "Let It Rock" CD (Repertoire)
Restock. Solo album from leader of Ten Years After. Originally released in 1978.

Turbonegro- "Party Animals" CD (Abacus)
Back in stock.

Eric Clapton- "461 Ocean Blvd." LP (Motown)
Back in stock on LP.

Bob Marley & The Wailers- "Live" LP (Island)
Back in stock. Live! is a Bob Marley & The Wailers live album, released on December 5, 1975. Live! was recorded July 18 and July 19, 1975 at the Lyceum Ballroom in London. The performance remains one of Marley's most famous.

Bob Marley & The Wailers- "Burnin'" LP (Island)
The Wailers' fourth album overall, Burnin', was their second for Island Records, released only six months after its predecessor, Catch a Fire. Given that speed, it's not surprising that several tracks — "Put It On," "Small Axe," and "Duppy Conqueror" — are re-recordings of songs dating back a few years. But they fit in seamlessly with the newer material, matching its religious militancy and anthemic style. The confrontational nature of the group's message is apparent immediately in the opening track, "Get Up, Stand Up," as stirring a song as any that emerged from the American Civil Rights movement a decade before.

The Beach Boys- "Pet Sounds" LP 180 gram (Capitol)
Back in stock.

Bob Dylan- "Blood On The Tracks" LP 180 gram (Columbia)
Back in stock.

Leadbelly- "Important Recordings 1939-1946" CDx4 (JSP)
A nice in depth anthology chronicling the above years.

Fennesz- "Black Sea" CD (Touch)
"Black Sea" is Fennesz's fourth solo full-length album for Touch, and his first since "Venice" in 2004. Beginning with some of Fennesz' trademark neo-industrial gurgles, it folds in bits of guitar and strings rather beautifully, creating a cluster of sound that trembles, seeming to wait for something. And that something moves in gradually in the form of a massive cloud of distortion, a fine white mist of harmonics mixed with a dark undercurrent of rumbling bass. The tension between these elements is so well balanced, each individual element remaining in the mix even as the sound field becomes impossibly dense, that it's no surprise that it takes a while to get it just right. LP coming soon!

Snow Patrol- "A Hundred Million Suns" LP (Geffen)
Their most recent one finally available on LP.

John Mayall- "With Eric Clapton & The Bluesbreakers" LP (Decca)
Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton is a 1966 electric blues album by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers featuring Eric Clapton as lead guitarist. It is often referred to as The Beano album because the photograph on the album cover shows Clapton reading The Beano, a well-known British children's comic.Much of the album was composed of blues standards by long-established blues artists such as Otis Rush, Freddie King and Robert Johnson, as well as a few originals penned by Mayall or Mayall and Clapton. The majority of the songs serve as showcases for the young Clapton's playing, apart from "Another Man" and "Ramblin' On My Mind." "Ramblin' On My Mind" was Clapton's very first recorded vocal performance .

Guns & Roses- "Use Your Illusion: Part 1" LPx2 (Geffen)
Reissued on double LP.

Guns & Roses- "Use Your Illusion: Part 2" LPx2 (Geffen)
Reissued on double LP.

The Police- "Reggatta De Blanc" LP (A&M)
Now in stock on LP.
br> The Telescopes- "As Approved By The Commitee" CD+LP (Bomp)
This 14-track Telescopes collection is a very idiosyncratic sampling of one of the leading lights of the late-'80s noise rock/shoegaze scene in the U.K. The band began in 1988 as a full-on noise band influenced by the Jesus & Mary Chain's wall of blistering guitars, the Stooges' sneering vocals and attitude, and Sonic Youth's disregard for the niceties of traditional song structure. Songs like "I Fall She Screams," "There is No Floor," and the epic-length "Suicide" howl and scream, with singer Stephen Lawrie's thin voice cutting through the haze to deliver vaguely apocalyptic drugged-out lyrics. The first seven songs here all fit that general description, and are taken from the band's 1989 debut album for What Goes On, Taste. Following that record, the band began to shift away from the pure noise approach and to experiment with dynamics and a lighter approach. "Pure Sweetest Ocean" (taken from the To Kill a Slow Girl Walking EP from 1990) features an actual semblance of a melody and five minutes of whale noises tacked on the end of the song. After signing to Creation in 1990, the band evolved even more. The title track from their Everso EP, released at the end of 1990, shows the band ditching the wall of noise guitars entirely and employing some subtlety and sonic adventurism (dig the wild sitar drones and dreamy background vocals from guitarist Jo Doran). They continued to explore textures and a more ambient approach on their cover of the Beach Boys' "Never Learn Not to Love" (another track from Everso); it even manages to be quite beautiful, with Lawrie crooning instead of whining.

V/A- "Survival Of The Fattest" LP (Fat Wreck)
In stock on LP for the 1st time.

Jenny Lewis- "Acid Tongue" LPx2+CD (Warner)
Jenny's new album on double vinyl with bonus CD included.

Helvetia- "The Clever North Wind" CD (Up)
The debut album by Helvetia is the sort of album that makes pretentious record reviewers give themselves paper cuts while thumbing through their thesauri looking for multiple synonyms of "trippy." However, while The Clever North Wind has its psychedelic moments, this is not yet another slab of sub-Flaming Lips neo-space rock: the core duo of Jason Albertini and Canaan Dove Amber (both formerly of Duster) puts all of the album's atmospheric doodling and cool sounds in the service of smart, well-written songs with memorable tunes and even the occasional catchy chorus. The epic grooves of Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized are an obvious touchstone, but so are the clever pop songs of the High Llamas or Loud Family on tracks like "Beezlebub (Leave Me Be)" and "A Wild One," which are every bit as inviting as Neu!-style churning drones like "Dusty Rue." The Clever North Wind is as melodic as it is hypnotic.

Brant Bjork & The Bros- "Somera Sol" CD (Low Desert Punk)
Restock.

Hank Williams- "Hillbilly Hero" CDx4 (Proper)
The music contained herein is a great overview of Hank Williams' earlier work and includes many hits and many obscure tunes. If you're a fan of toe-tappin' early country music or if you're a fan of the great Hank Williams Sr., then this set is definitely for you. The sound quality is very good and there's a nice booklet all about Hank and the music. "Hillbilly Hero" is another fantastic value from the folks at Proper.

Kinski/Bardo Pond- "Sonic Attack: Hawkwind Tribute" 7" (Trensmat)
Kinski do "Master Of The Universe" & Bardo Pond perform "Lord Of Light". Super limited!

Mudhoney do "Urban Guerilla" & Mugstar perform "Born To Go". Super limited!

Little Walter- "Juke" CD (Proper)
A 23 track introduction to the king of the blues harmonica. Includes extensive liner notes.

Charley Patton- "Pony Blues" CD (Proper)
A 25 track introduction to the music of delta bluesman Charlie Patton. "If the Delta country blues has a convenient source point, it would probably be Charley Patton, its first great star. His hoarse, impassioned singing style, fluid guitar playing, and unrelenting beat made him the original king of the Delta blues. Much more than your average itinerant musician, Patton was an acknowledged celebrity and a seminal influence on musicians throughout the Delta. Rather than bumming his way from town to town, Patton would be called up to play at plantation dances, juke joints, and the like. He'd pack them in like sardines everywhere he went, and the emotional sway he held over his audiences caused him to be tossed off of more than one plantation by the ownership, simply because workers would leave crops unattended to listen to him play any time he picked up a guitar. He epitomized the image of a '20s "sport" blues singer: rakish, raffish, easy to provoke, capable of downing massive quantities of food and liquor, a woman on each arm, with a flashy, expensive-looking guitar fitted with a strap and kept in a traveling case by his side, only to be opened up when there was money or good times involved." (AMG)

Maddox Brothers & Rose- "That'll Learn Ya Durn Ya" CD (Proper)
A 30 song look at the music of "America's Most Colorful Hillbilly Band". The Maddox Brothers and Rose were based in California from the 1930s to the 1950s. The group consisted of four brothers, Fred, Cal, Cliff and Don Maddox with their sister Rose. Cliff died in 1949 and was replaced by brother Henry.
The family hailed from Boaz, Alabama, but rode the rails and hitch hiked to California in 1933 when the band members were still children, following the failed efforts of their sharecropper parents during the early part of the Depression. They were a little in advance of the flood of Okies who were to flood the state in the 30s. They struggled to make a living as intinerant fruit and vegetable pickers following the harvest as far north as Washington state, and as far east as Arizona, as well as in the San Joaquin Valley. They often worked from dusk to dawn, sleeping and eating on the ground.
Having settled in Modesto, the family developed their musical ability and, in 1937 performed on the radio, sponsored by a local furniture store. From 1946-1951 the group recorded for 4 Star Records (Hollywood), then for Columbia Records. Some 4 Star masters were leased and released by US.-Decca Records at the beginning of the 1950s. The following quotes are from Rose Maddox. "We were called hillbilly singers - not country - then. No, none of this country music then. People just called us hillbilly... People tell me that I was one of the first women to sing what I sang - country boogie. I guess I was. There was no rock 'n' roll in those early days, before 1955. Only country boogie. My brothers also played that way. We called it country then." Hillbilly Swing, Hillbilly Boogie, and Oakie Boogie are terms that have also been used to describe the type of music played by this group.
The Maddox's material ranged from the country standards of Hank Williams and Merle Travis, cowboy songs, to the Western Swing of Bob Wills, to old-time, folk, and church singing, to Jazz, Swing, Boogie Woogie and even a taste of early Rock and Roll.
Fred Maddox played upright bass using the "slap bass" technique as early as 1937. This trademark backbeat, a slapping bass style, helped drive a broad change in popular music, sporting a faster, immediately discernable rhythm that came to be known as rockabilly.

Megapuss- "Surfing" CD (Vapor)
In collaboration with Greg Rogove (Priestbird), Devendra Banhart has formed Megapuss. Its debut release, Surfing, can be found on Neil Young’s Vapour Records. Surfing has Banhart’s folky fingerprints all over it – however, it sounds like a Banhart album that’s taken a holiday in southern California in the ‘60s, drank its own body weight in tequila and spent an inordinate time hanging out with Brian Wilson, Mama Cass et al.

Rodney Crowell- "Sex & Gasoline" CD (Stony Plain)
Rodney Crowell's commercial succes in the '80s may have linked him eternally to that decade's country scene, but the contemplative yet fierce records he has made in the last 10 years have been closer to Bob Dylan than Vince Gill. Just like Dylan, he can be angry without being loud, and romantic without relying on cliched schmaltz. Crowell can sing a lustful tune called "I Want You" and make you believe that the horniest guy in the room is also the smartest.

GG Allin- "Hated In The Nation" CD (Roir)
Restock.

GG Allin- "I'm Your Enemy" CD (Aware)
Restock.

GG Allin- "Freaks, Faggots & Junkies" CD (Aware)

The Meatmen- "Stud Powercock: The Touch & Go Years 1981-1984" CD (Touch & Go)
STUD POWERCOCK contains the WE'RE THE MEATMEN AND YOU SUCK! LP, the CRIPPLED CHILDREN SUCK and DUTCH HERCULES EPs, and tracks from the PROCESS OF ELIMINATION compilation, the BLUD SAUSAGE EP, and various demos, live recordings, and outtakes.

Conifer- "Crown Fire" CD (Important)
Though Conifer has received quite a bit of critical praise they've somehow managed to live off the grid for the past six years. With Crown Fire Conifer is finally getting the exposure they deserve. Mixing post-rock, kraut-rock, metal and psychedelia they have created this relentlessly driving and hypnotic masterpiece. Crown Fire's only vocals are from Oxbow's Eugene Robinson fronting the albums final 13 minute epic. LP version limited to 500 copies with 200 on color vinyl.
Conifer has been writing primarily instrumental music with a lawless take on the styles from which they've taken cue. New content is found by way of augmenting brutality and suspense with time. Conifer seems to reckon with the notions of bands like Enemymine, Mogwai, or Grails while taking an approach toward their music that's entirely meditative (as opposed to premeditated). Minimal, ethereal passages are narcotically lengthened and crescendos of distortion are sustained well beyond the boundaries adhered to by many of their peers. "Heavy" by way of being beat/repetition heavy in not only a Shellac/Helmet sense but in a way that is practically reminiscent of electronic discipline. Crushing riffs amidst the most ethereal, minimal moments.
Six years in, Conifer has emerged from their mind forest into the clearing that is the future and past. Band members have come and gone and come again. Crown Fire is the latest battle that Conifer has fought in the war of obtuse movement. Welcoming dense riffage washes over the listener for the first half of the record, referencing pan Asian themes and musical manifest destiny. The bombast that is their live show comes through loud and clear, intertwined with moments of delicate reflection. Without warning it all goes wrong, the mainframe explodes, the ships crash, the tide of despair and denial rises never to recede.
Hailing from the capital of the heavy state of Maine, Conifer has an extremely close relationship with fellow travellers Ocean. These two groups have shared a lot over the years including members, tour transportation, practice spaces and members of the two groups grew up together in rural costal towns. Though different in sound they're quite kindred in spirit and obviously Conifer is essential for anyone who loved Ocean's Here Where Nothing Grows.

The Clash- "Live At Shea Stadium" LP (Epic/Europe)
Imported copies of the newly released Clash live album. Fancy packaged CD is also in stock.

Andre Williams- "The Black Godfather" LP (In The Red)
A recently unearthed copy of this deleted album from the "Dirty Ole Man" of sleaze rock. Lots of cool guests such as the Gories, Dirtbombs etc.

Slayer- "Show No Mercy" LP (Metal Blade)
Only 1 copy in stock. Limited edition blood spattered colored vinyl. "Hell Awaits" also came in, but it sold in minutes.

Earthless- "Lives" 10" (Gravity)
“San Diego's Earthless return with this live 10" release. Earthless are comprised of Mario Rubalcaba on the drums, from Hot Snakes, Rocket From The Crypt, and Clikatat Ikatowi, Isaiah Mitchell on guitar who has played in Nebula and other notable bands, and Mike Egginton on bass who was previously in Electric Nazarene. On this 10" Earthless are shown in their natural, and best form as a live band. They play thundering, 20 minute, partially improvised, dynamic songs, with ultra-long effected psychedelic leads and relentlessly pounding drum parts, all tied together with a distorted wall of bass. Earthless are an all around epic band. Influenced by the likes of Sleep, Hawkwind, Jimi Hendrix, The Groundhogs, and Amon Duul2. Earthless are a San Diego favorite who have played with bands such as High On Fire, Acid Mothers Temple, Nebula, Om, Mountain, and Comets On Fire.

The Meatmen- "Crippled Children Suck" LP (Touch & Go)
Now in stock on LP.

The Meatmen- "We're The Meatmen & You Suck" LP (Touch & Go)
Now in stock on LP.

The Germs- "M.I.A." CD (Slash)
The complete Germs anthology. There are other collections with rarer material out there, notably the live Germicide and Media Blitz, but unless one is a rabid must-have-everything-Crash-breathed-on fanatic, (MIA) is everything one could ever want from the Germs in one perfect collection. Not simply a reissue of (GI) -- thus the joke of the title -- (MIA) pulls together everything from the very first recordings to the last efforts of the classic lineup, namely six songs done for the film Cruising. Only one was ever actually released on the soundtrack, "Lions Share," so hearing the others in studio form is welcome and long overdue, including the only Crash/Lorna Doom co-write, the brusque strutter "Now I Hear the Laughter."

Mount Erie with Julie Doiron- "Lost Wisdom" LP (Indie)

The Dead Science- "Villainaire" CD+LP (Constellation)
Seattle-based The Dead Science has created a majestic, ornate and soaring collection of postpunk avantpop on this, their fourth full-length album, and their first for Constellation. Villainaire is a brilliant song cycle driven by layers of Sam Mickens’ vibrato-laden voice, dark lyricism and sterling guitar work. Bassist (acoustic and electric) Jherek Bischoff and drummer Nick Tamburro anchor the tunes with endlessly inventive polyrhythmic suppleness. Together the trio unleashes a truly unique sound, intensely literate in both word and sound, with a controlled and commanding fury.
The songs on Villainaire range from epic orchestral pop to sinister jazz-rock to weary, soul-bleached balladry. Sam Mickens writes about “moral pragmatism and experimental moral nihilism, black-out drunkenness and its psychic and emotional repercussions, and the continuum of baroque fantasy and stark reality” – all delivered with inimitable, seductive, and at times disturbing operatics. Fans of Shudder To Think, Scott Walker, Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, Blonde Redhead and/or US Maple should find deep and abiding pleasure in Villainaire.

Okkervil River- "The Stand Ins" LP (Jagjaguwar)
Restock on LP.

Rah Rah- "Going Steady" CD (Young Soul Records)
Regina's indie faves. It would be nice to see this on vinyl someday as well.

Rick White- "The Rick White Album" CD (Blue Fog)
First solo album from Elevator/Eric's Trip frontman. Mostly acoustic in a Syd Barrett kinda fashion. Very good stuff! The LP is now deleted. Sorry!

The Unintended- "S/T" CD (Blue Fog)
Very trippy collaboration between Rick White & The Sadies. One of my favorite CD's. No vinyl for this one I'm afarid.

Dillard & Clark- "The Fantastic Expedition Of Dillard & Clark" CD (Water)
Gene Clark was the greatest underrated singer/songwriter to emerge from the '60s rock explosion, and deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Neil Young. This album, his debut as a duo with virtuoso banjoist/guitarist Doug Dillard, is perhaps his most brilliant recording. Out of the ashes of the Byrds and a brilliant false start of a solo career (the excellent Echoes album), the 1968 Dillard & Clark project found Clark collecting some of his finest material (basically the entire album) and putting it in the familiar context of bluegrass and country, a good year before these elements became vogue in the pop world. But Gene Clark was always ahead of his time. Bookended by two exquisite autobiographical explorations into consciousness -- "Out on the Side" and Something's Wrong" -- the album's other tracks run from mournful ballad statements such as "Radio Song" to joyous celebrations like "With Care from Someone." There is also a very hot cover of the gospel number "Git It on Brother," which features Chris Hillman on mandolin. Doug Dillard's playing on the record is uniformly excellent. Not only a virtuoso musician, Dillard is a truly smart player who never gets in the way of the songs. Graceful, spellbinding, and tasteful all at the same time. Absolutely essential. (AMG)

Fuck Buttons- "Street Horrrsing" CD (ATP)
Some bands with a name like Fuck Buttons would go for a raunchy approach, but on their debut Street Horrrsing, the Bristol-based group focuses on messing with layers of sounds instead of anything sleazy. Fuck Buttons' collage of brittle electronics, post-rock epics, and blistering noise recalls more than a few other bands -- they're capable of raging like Wolf Eyes, conjuring Aa's dead calm, echoing Mogwai's majesty and mining similar territory to tourmates like Stars of the Lid and Deerhunter -- but they put these elements together in their own beautiful, and often unsettling, way.

Celtic Frost- "Vanity/Nemesis" CD (Noise)
Back in stock on CD. Originally released in 1999.

The Memories Attack- "S/T" CD (Tumult)
