A Few New Items Just In!
    Tuesday, January 06 2009 @ 10:30 am CST
    Contributed by: Dave

    These items now in stock.

The Week That Was- "S/T" CD+LP (Memphis Industries)
They call their music melodramatic popular song. From Newcastle UK. On both formats.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion- "Acme" CD (Matador)
Back in stock. Visceral take on garage rock that's been dragged through the rockabilly blues.

Flamin' Groovies- "Teenage Head" CDx2 (Arkarma)
European version of this great anthology which includes live concert material on the second CD. The Groovies were one of the USA's best exponents of 60's/70's Stones fueled bar band rock & roll.

Curtains- Vehicles Of Travel" CD (Frenetic)
From Oakland California. This album is from 2004 on the Frenetic label. Two years later they did an album on Asthmatic Kitty and then they broke up. They now record under the name Cryptacize. Quirky angular indie pop.

    Rancid- "S/T" LP (Epitaph)
    Restock on LP.

Rancid- "Out Come The Wolves" LP (Epitaph)
    Restock on LP.

Rancid- "Life Won't Wait" LP (Epitaph)
    Restock on LP.

    Rancid- "Let's Go" LP (Epitaph)
    Restock on LP.

Van Morrison- "Astral Weeks" LP (Rhino)
Recent Rhino records reissue of this much beloved album from the Belfast Cowboy. This album pretty much stands alone in the sense that nothing before or after has ever sounded anything like it. A no brainer!

Sigur Ros- "Meo Suo I Eyrum" LP (XL)
Their most recent album now coming for the 1st time on vinyl.

Wanda Jackson- "Heart Trouble" CD (Navarre)
Wanda Jackson was, and, it seems, remains, almost 50 years later, the undisputed queen of rockabilly. Her self-titled comeback album from 2001 was a stellar example of her remaining rock & roll swagger, but this time out, she has a host of the faithful famous paying tribute. Dave Alvin, Elvis Costello, the Cramps, Lee Rocker, and the Cadillac Angels all join the rollicking festivities. Given a killer collection of songs, such as Paul Kennerley's title track with backing vocal support from Siedah Garrett, to a smoking version of the Louvin Brothers' "Cash on the Barrelhead," to the wooly instrumentation on some cuts -- such as the Cramps burning through Charlie McCoy's "Funnel of Love" with her -- Jackson's range seems indomitable and her voice is still in fine shape. Rosie Flores' help on the swinging "Woman Walk Out the Door" is a modern honky tonk masterpiece. The duet with Costello, a moving version of Buck Owens' "Crying Time," is simply one of the finest country-duet performances out there and deserves a Grammy. But it's on the tracks on which Jackson appears with her band, such as "Mean Mean Man," "Riot in Cell Block No. 9," and "It Happens Every Time" (Alvin plays guitar on them, but does not sing) with Jackson handling all the vocals that work the best. Simply put, this is a rock & roll dream, full of raw, sharp performances, killer songs, and Jackson's irrepressible ability to take even the most innocent song and make it salacious. (AMG)

The Ocean- "Pantheon Of The Lesser" CD (Important)
Following their acclaimed breakthrough debut album-which caught the ears of critics and fans worldwide and became Important’s highest-selling album-Ocean has returned with their forward-thinking, brutally heavy, and purely minimalist sophomore album Pantheon of the Lesser. CD is packaged in a deluxe foil-printed heavy-duty cardboard jacket with art by renowned Maine illustrator Bruce Hutchison. LP available for special order (500 copies only. 200 gram vinyl).

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO- "Glorify Astrological Martyrdom" CD (ImportanT)
Acid Mother's Temple's Glorify Astrological Martyrdom is sure to appeal to the myriad AMT fans who have made "Crystal Rainbow Pyramid", a new fan favorite. Professionally recorded mega riffage for a super defined clean sound. Kawabata and company deliver this focused rock explosion full of hyper repetitive heavy hooks and freaked out pitched up vocals.

T Rex- "Electric Warrior" LP 180 gram (Rhino)
    Remastered in original gatefold sleeve.

T Rex- "The Slider" LP 180 gram (Get Back)
Restock from the UK. heavyweight vinyl.

Diana Krall- "The Very Best Of" LPx2 (Verve)
    Restock.

Bonnie Prince Billy- "Lie Down In The Light" CD+LP (Drag City)
Restock in both formats. This one made the X-Ray top 50 of 2008.

Palace- "Viva Last Blues" LP (Drag City)
Restock. Originally released in 1995. This incarnation of Palace (Bonnie Prince Billy), one of its more impressive, sees frontman Will Oldham turning out some of the strongest bleak country-rock in his career and taking the music in a few intriguing and even upbeat directions. With a great supporting cast that includes, among others, Sebadoh's Jason Loewenstein on drums and Oldham's brother Ned on bass, the group busts out laid-back twangy tunes that can really rock when the opportunity comes up.

Real McKenzies- "Off The Leash" LP+CD (Fat Wreck)
Vancouver's THE REAL McKENZIES are true gadabouts at heart. Fueled by an insatiable appetite for filthy punk shows, Scotch whiskey, and all out mayhem, these kilt-clad punks continue on their quest to bring their patented brand of music to the masses. Their latest concoction, Off the Leash, embodies the spirit of THE REAL McKENZIES through a melding of driving punk rhythms and traditional Scottish melodies. Guitars and bagpipes play off each other as Paul McKenzie spins yarns of times long past and recounts endless drunken revelries. The unbridled energy and merriment of Off the Leash will immediately have the listener hoisting a pint glass and singing along to the 13 infectious tracks. As always, THE McKENZIES will be hitting the road hard, bringing the album to life in an inebriated whirlwind of kilts, bagpipes and punk rock. LP comes with bonus CD.

Chemical Brothers- "Exit Planet Dust" LPx2 (Astralwerks)

Kings Of Leon- "Only By The Night" LPx2 (Warner)

The Strokes- "Is This It?" LP BMG)
Their brilliant 1st album on LP.

The Knife- "Silent Shout" CDx2+DVD (Mute)
Deluxe version that has 2 CD's + a DVD. Superior electronic pop!

    Tom Waits- "Alice" LP (Anti)
    Back in stock.

Madonna- "Hard Candy" LPx3 + CD (Warner)
The deluxe vinyl package of MADONNA's upcoming album features three regular weight vinyl discs (one black, two candy colored swirled) in a three-pocket jacket, with a bonus audio CD of the album.

The Decemberists- "A Practical Handbook" DVD (KRS)
The past three years have seen The Decemberists rise to the first rank of the indie music world with a series of bold, beautiful albums, including 2005’s Picaresque and Her Majesty, The Decemberists (2003). In 2006, the band released their major label debut album, The Crane Wife, on Capitol Records. On these albums, Colin Meloy’s crafty compositions marry an infallible melodic knack with a venturesome lyrical palette equally suitable for painting fantastical songs full of sea captains, legionnaires, chimney sweeps and seekers of all kinds. Led by these songs, and by a group dynamic that embraces experimentation even as it celebrates classic pop and folk forms -- to say nothing of klezmer, Irish jig, sea chantey, and prog rock -- This DVD captures the Decemberists in the midst of their rise to prominence with a live recording of the band in concert at the Roseland Theatre in Portland, Oregon on November 4, 2005. There are five videos for songs off Picaresque and Her Majesty, as well as a documentary shot during the recording of The Crane Wife in which the band discusses their origins and how they arrived where they are now, in a converted church filled with instruments and toys, making the record of their dreams. The Decemberists: A Practical Handbook is also filled with the kind of quirky details that fans love and have come to expect from this band. Illustrations by Carson Ellis, the band’s artist-in-residence, abound, as well as a series of short films shot during the photo session for the album cover photos for Picaresque. An assortment of outtakes, like Jenny Conlee playing melancholy accordian on a late-night street corner and the whole band recording a scream, can also be found by those who take the time to look!

Liz Durrett- "Outside Our Gates" CD (Warm Electronic Recordings)
Produced and arranged by indie rock icon, Eric Bachmann (Archers of Loaf, Crooked Fingers, Azure Ray), Outside Our Gates, represents a sonic leap forward for Liz Durrett. With Bachmann on board, Durrett’s once spare, acoustic downbeats have been supplanted by a more textured and diverse orchestra of sounds. A virtual cacophony of instruments are here, including (but not limited to) tiny nylon-string guitars, backwards electric feedback loops, pizzicato violins, plucky cellos, upright bass, wurlitzers, accordions, grand space pianos and marching drums. Bachmann’s score somehow harmonizes these elements seamlessly to provide the perfect setting for Durrett’s near dream-state writings and softly unsettling voice. Additional performances by Vic Chesnutt, Brian Causey (Man or Astro-man?), Amanda Kapousouz (Tin Cup Phrophette) and members of Ham1.

Mother Mother- "O My Heart" CD (Last Gang)
Vancouver Canada's Mother Mother are generating much recognition with their original approach to modern pop/rock music; a beautifully bent portrait of vocal harmony, clever, offbeat lyricism, and dynamic instrumentation. Their sound is best encapsulated on their sophomore album, O My Heart, produced by Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, The New Pornographers).

Jeff Hanson- "Madam Owl" CD (KRS)
This guy made National Public Radio's best of 2008 list. Poignant outsider indie folk rock. Apparently Jeff is often mistaken for a woman due to the high nature of his voice. Probably will appeal to fans of Elliott Smith etc.

Atlas Sound- "Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel" CD (KrankY)
One of the latest true queer art punks to emerge from the cracked pavement of southern suburban sprawl, Atlas Sound is the solo moniker of DEERHUNTER frontman/provocateur Bradford Cox. Here on his debut album, Cox/Sound moves out of dank nightclubs filled with eternal existential drone punk, and relaxes at home in his Atlanta bedroom. And this is, essentially, a bedroom album, a collage, mixing the garage rock and ambient electronic influences previously explored with Deerhunter in a new context, with newly explored recording techniques, mainly laptop-based, learned with guidance from Kranky artist Nudge’s Brian Foote. The result is 14 songs of melancholy and mania. This is a true solo album, entirely created and produced by a single person. Double LP coming soon.

Girl Talk- "Night Ripper" CD (Illegal Art)
From 2006. Gregg Gillis has been cutting up and gluing bits and pieces of songs together as a DJ in Pittsburgh since his 2002 debut, Secret Diary, an album that, though a lot of easily identifiable samples (the Price Is Right theme, for example) were used, was so delayed and skipped and glitched that it was too obfuscated to do much in the mainstream. Such is not the case with Night Ripper, however, which, thanks to Gillis's ability to draw from a myriad of musical sources (the names of the artists used, though not their songs, are listed in alphabetical order inside the liner notes, and in fact make up the entirety of the liner notes), can appeal to anyone who's heard the radio (particularly rap radio) in the past few years. Because of the recognizability of the pieces used, Night Ripper is a good tool for showing listeners unfamiliar with the art of sampling what a talented DJ can actually do; Gillis' favorite trick on the album is to play a long vocal track, preferably something from the Ying Yang Twins or Ludacris, over rock (be it classic, indie, or grunge) beats, which he speeds up or slows down as necessary. It's pretty impressive, and at first listen, it's pretty fun.

Girl Talk- "Feed The Animals" CD (Illegal Art)
The follow-up to the tremedously successful "Night Ripper" from Pittsburgh artist Gregg Gillis, aka GIRL TALK. Gillis has scrupulously created music from samples for over eight years. His fourth album on the Illegal Art label, Feed The Animals, continues his sonic evolution towards his party-infested live show and steps even closer towards a creation that is centered on pop musicality rather than attention-deficit sample splicing. Pitchfork has already reviewed this and given it a rating of 8.0.

Bob Dylan- "Tell Tale Signs: Bootleg Series Vol.8" LPx4 Box Set (Columbia)
4xLP 180 gram vinyl in a 12x12 box with lift cover, download card, 60 page booklet with photos.

Nebula- "BBC Sessions" CD (Sweet Nothing)
In August 2002, NEBULA were invited to do a Peel Session at BBC's Maida Vale Studios. The session was so well received that the band were invited back in 2003 for a Radio 1 Rock Show performance and again in March 2004 for another Peel Session. This album is a fantastic chance to hear the band as near as live as you can get at a gig! Guitarist Eddie Glass and drummer Ruben Romano formed Nebula in 1997 after breaking away from desert rock pioneers Fu Manchu, eventually recruiting bassist Mark Abshire. The power trio specializes in feedback-drenched heavy rock, incorporating liberal doses of Black Sabbath riffery, psychedelia, and space rock.

Apollo Sunshine- "Shall Noise Upon" CD (Headless Heroes)
The third full-length album from APOLLO SUNSHINE. Written and recorded on the spot in the Catskill Mountains in a house inhabited by spirits, the band surrendered themselves to divine will, universal harmony, and the fierce belief in their collective headspace and transformative musical alchemy. This is a celebration of darkness and light, love and death, friends and lovers, ghosts, searching, finding, losing, destroying, and creating anew. Taste magazine says: "Apollo Sunshine takes the wild, psychedelic instrumentation of the Elephant Six collective, reigns it in, adds a hint of roots-rock accessiblity to the brit-pop bliss, and cranks the amps to eleven".

    Friendly Fires- "S/T" LP (XL)
Friendly Fires is a UK based trio who play what the LA Times call "expert party music". This is incredibly soulful pop music that takes the most outthere bits of !!!, the atmospherics of My Bloody Valentine, melds it to the urgency of The Rapture and Liquid Liquid, AND makes it totally danceable. A super limited seven-inch single, "Paris", was judged to be the Single of the Week in both the NME and The Guardian. "Paris" is a deft combination of clattering percussion and a blessed out, hum-along hook, the brilliantly wonky waltz-like rhythms on "White Diamonds", point to their love of German techno label Kompakt, while the Epworth-produced first single "Jump In The Pool" is an inspired collision of loose Liquid Liquid drums and My Bloody Valentine atmospherics. LP comes with free download.

    AC/DC- "Rock & Roll Train" 7" (Atlantic)
Extremely limited 7" version of their new big hit. I got 2 copies & then it's gone.

Waylon Jennings- "Waylon Forever" CD (Vagrant)
CD edition of this posthumous release by the country legend, which began life back in the 90's as a collaboration between Waylon and his son Shooter Jennings. It consists mostly of slightly rocked-up versions of Waylon classics, but the arrangements are all pretty tasteful. Includes a cover of Cream's classic "White Room"! Double LP coming soon!

The new updated & expanded version in the ongoing series of Pavement reissues.
