Black Keys- "Thickfreakness" Picture Disc (Fat Possum)
Limited edition picture disc of The Black Keys 2nd album.
Blaze Foley- "Dawg Years" CD (Fat Possum)
The late singer and songwriter Blaze Foley is almost unheard of outside of the circles of music fans who follow that scene closely. For many Austin musicians, he was a crazy saint, an iconoclast who was banned from virtually every bar in town, but whose songs are deeply admired and whose persona was singular -- he didn't give a good god damn what anybody thought of him. He has been immortalized in Lucinda Williams' beautiful "Drunken Angel" and songwriter-guitarist Gurf Morlix, who played with him, lovingly mastered a record they made together in the late '70s which was released in 2006 as Blaze Foley & the Beaver Valley Boys. Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Kings of Leon, Lyle Lovett, and John Prine, among others, have recorded his songs. He's been exploited on a few compilations that have come out over the years with awful post-production work that he would never have agreed to. Fat Possum deepens the legend further without soiling the artist in the process. The Dawg Years is a collection of 20 Foley songs, recorded when his moniker was Deputy Dawg. They were cut during three different living room sessions between February of 1976 and September of 1978. They may or may not be his first recordings, but they are from the very beginning of the myth and legend that he became. They were intimately cut at the home of Margery & Billy Bouris and sat in the back of a closet for 25 years. This is the first time they've been released in total -- 20 tracks worth. Despite the fact that these were cut in mono, and a baby can be heard crying through some of it, the fidelity is excellent, and the performances -- some with sparse dialogue--are startlingly present, emotionally taut and quietly intense. Foley's approach encompassed folk, country, blues, rag, and other styles; in other words, he was an Americana artist before the genre existed. With his excellent guitar playing, writing and singing, he was direct, often funny, and clever, and in some songs, there is a quiet rage that burns for his version of justice. Check the songs "Tree House Lullaby," "The Moonlight Song," "Crawl Back to You," "Basil's Song," "Rudee Down in New Orleans," "Big Chief Hightower," and the humorous "Cosmic Doo Doo" (where he name checks Bruce Springsteen). Some well-known tunes are here too, such as "Springtime in Uganda," "Big Cheeseburgers and Good French Fries," "New Wave Blues," "Election Day," and "Cold, Cold World." For anyone who loved Foley's music, who knew him either as Blaze Foley or Deputy Dawg, or even heard his name mentioned in relation to legends like Townes Van Zandt's, this set is for you. It's the real deal and can't be recommended highly enough.
Stan Rogers- "The Very Best Of" CD (Fogarty's Cove)
16 tracks of classic Stan Rogers.
Peter Case- "Wig" CD (Yep Roc)
Peter returns with another rockin' solo set. Includes free download.
Dax Riggs- "Say Good Night To The World" CD (Fat Possum)
Louisiana’s own dark star and Orpheus of the underground, Dax Riggs – the fool in your tarot deck – trippin’ over his own tombstone, reaching into the atmosphere and pulling spirits from the air. An alchemy of all roots music, doom metal and glam-punk poetry. It sounds like voodoo, feels like redemption and puts off heat like a burning oil rig. In the service of tears and the ghost of all sorrows…say goodnight to the world.
Ex-deadboy and the Elephantmen and ex-Acid Bath’s Dax Riggs will release his sophomore solo album Say Goodnight To The World in mid July, on Fat Possum Records. Recorded over two weeks in his home insane asylum with dancing boys of Austin, TX, Charley Siess (drums) and Kevin Fitzsimmons (bass); co-produced with multi-instrumentalist Robbie Lee (Howling Hex, Baby Dee); and mixed with Eric Wofford (Black Angels, Bill Callahan).

Futureheads- "The Chaos" LP 180 gram (Dovecote)
The Futureheads’ new full-length album, 'The Chaos', is the band's fourth album and arguably their most riotous to date. 'The Chaos' was recorded over a series of sessions with David Brewis of Field Music and renowned producer Youth. The band has two songs in the new "Rock Band" video game released in March, and will be touring to promote the new album.

I See Hawks In L.A.- "Hallowed Ground" CD (Big Book)
"Hallowed Ground is the fourth release from country/rock/folk/psychedelic act I See Hawks In L.A. Formed in 1999 by songwriting team Rob Waller and Paul Lacques, the Hawks have traveled far from their humble back porch in sunny southern California. In 2001, their eponymous debut established the Hawks signature sound: high lonesome three part harmonies, twang guitar and unadorned acoustic arrangements, with lyrics musing on mortality, whales, and the geography of a fading pre-apocalyptic L.A. Fan favorite Grapevine followed in 2004 with California Country emerging in 2006. Legendary California country artists such as The Byrd's Chris Hillman joined in and strummed right along. And now here's Hallowed Ground. The album carries much that Hawks fans have grown to expect: those beautiful harmonies, timeless songwriting, and epic psychedelic guitar and steel. The Hawks have hit their stride. These songs cover a wide ranging territory, yet it all fits together into the Hawks underlying philosophy of Nature versus Man versus Miller Beer. One moment you are riding high on a Topanga ridge watching gray whales breach in the Pacific sun and the next you are digging a well after the grid has gone down, canning vegetables and milking your goat. Imaginatively conceived and expertly executed, Hallowed Ground is ready to shine. ""Such joyous music-making, such corrosive, acid-etched lyrics. Way cosmic."

The Chemical Brothers- "Further" LPx2 (Parlophone)
Their brand new release on double vinyl.
Eagles Of Death Metal- "Death By Sexy" LP (Cargo Germany)
Taking things a little more seriously -- but never too seriously -- the second time around, the Eagles of Death Metal's Death by Sexy keeps the freewheeling, just-for-the-hell-of-it vibe that made Peace Love Death Metal so much fun and improves on it with more focused songwriting. This songwriting, as the title Death by Sexy implies, is obviously focused on a raunchy good time, which the album delivers in spades. Not so obvious, though, is how fine the line between lusty and skanky can be. Most of the time, as on "I Want You So Hard," "I Like to Move in the Night," and "Cherry Cola," the Eagles of Death Metal stay on the sexy side of that line, but they even do the nasty (so to speak) stuff well: On "I Got a Feelin' (Just 19)" and "Shasta Beast," head Eagle Jesse "The Devil" Hughes -- who sports a mustache not seen outside of '70s porn (or, possibly, Terry Richardson's high-sleaze photography) -- sings of barely legal girls who still live with their parents, and gets downright cruel on the glammy stomp of "Poor Doggie." Even though Death by Sexy is more fleshed-out than their debut was, the Eagles of Death Metal's simplest moments are still their best. Along with the previously mentioned "I Want You So Hard" and "Cherry Cola" -- which has backing vocals courtesy of Brody Dalle that give it an extra-sexy edge -- the album's standouts include "Chase the Devil," which marks the return of Hughes' demented Elvis impersonation, and "Solid Gold," a rollicking-yet-hypnotic instrumental that could soundtrack a go-go dancing contest. Fittingly for its on-the-prowl vibe, Death by Sexy spends a minimum of time on brooding tracks like "Eagles Goth" and "Bag O' Miracles." Instead, it focuses on songs that sound good in bad places, and its gloriously, thoroughly trashy fun makes it a guilt-free fling.
Marc Bolan- "Electric Boogie" LP (Easy Action)
Unreleased studio versions, rare and previously unheard tracks from the legendary MARC BOLAN, packaged in a deluxe sleeve. Coloured vinyl, limited to one pressing only. This is the first in a series of vinyl releases to cover rare and unreleased material by Marc Bolan, T. Rex and Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Lee Scratch Perry & Adrian Sherwood- "Dub Setter" LP (On-U Sound)
Limited edtiion vinyl issue. Born from the sessions that birthed Lee Perry’s 'Mighty Upsetter' album, but far more than just a straight dub version of that set, 'Dub Setter' is a 10 track collection of heavyweight dubs comprised of both radical reworkings of 'Mighty Upsetter' tunes alongside brand new material. It is also the first full-on dub album with Adrian Sherwood at the controls since 'Never Trust A Hippy' in 2003. As well as making an excellent companion piece to 'Mighty Upsetter', this album finds Sherwood operating at the peak of his rootical production powers, playing the studio to full soundboy effect as he draws on a vast range of righteous musics from around the globe to create a conquering lion of earth-shaking psychedelic rhythm and sound that will delight any fan of the trademarked On-U style.
Pat Metheny- "Travels" LPx2 (ECM)
Now well into its gliding Brazilian-tinged mode, the Pat Metheny Group hits the road, as this two-LP set catches the band live in Dallas, Philadelphia, Hartford, Sacramento, and Nacogdoches, TX. Percussionist Naná Vasconcelos is still listed as a "special guest," but ever since Wichita Falls, he had not only been a part of the group, he was the transforming element in the Metheny "sound," adding his various shakers, effects and ethereal vocals. Sidekick Lyle Mays gets deeper into floating, glistening synthesizer textures, but he is still able to take formidable and touching solos on acoustic grand piano. Still experimenting with new hardware, Metheny's work on a detuned guitar synthesizer gives the live "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls" an exotic Balinese-like sound. Other highlights are the hard Brazilian grooves on "Straight On Red" and "Song for Bilbao," as well as the trademark Metheny glide of "Are You Going With Me?" -- and the brief title track has a winning, guileless simplicity much like that of Keith Jarrett in a prayerful mood.
The National- "Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers" LP (Brassland)
Finally available on vinyl! 'Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers' was THE NATIONAL's second full-length album, originally released in 2003.
Sun Dial- "Reflector" CDx2 (Shrunken Head)
Shrunken Head's deluxe SUN DIAL reissue program continues with this deluxe edition of the band's 1992 album 'Reflecter'. Fronted by guitarist Gary Ramon, psychedelic rock band Sun Dial emerged in 1990. Their second album, 'Reflecter' sold well enough to make the UK Indie Top 10 and has been unavailable on CD for a decade. Added to the original album for this edition is their EP, 'Fazer', plus various non-album tracks, including alternative versions and radio jingles from those sessions.
Jack Bruce & Robin Trower- "Seven Moons" LP (Music On Vinyl)
180 gram vinyl edition of the 2008 album from veterans JACK BRUCE and ROBIN TROWER. 'Seven Moons' finds these prominent members of the seminal British rock and blues scene of the 1960s back together and in fine form. The duo made two joint recordings in the early 1980's, and again teamed up on record, this time with British drummer Gary Husband - a member of Gary Moore’s band and the pop band Level 42. What makes 'Seven Moons' such a success is that Bruce and Trower each play to their strengths. Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented tunes dominated by Trower's playing. They conjure a Power Rock trio sound which touches on Cream and Hendrix yet draws from their own deep, dark wells of experience. To sum it up simply, 'Seven Moons' is a spot-on recreation of late-'60s blues-rock's halcyon days! Packaged in a gatefold sleeve with lyric sheet.

Jimmy McGriff- "Electric Funk" LP (Blue Note)
One of Jimmy's funkiest albums ever -- a sweeeeet batch of short, hard, and funky cuts -- and a record that ranks right up there with the mighty Soul Sugar for sheer funkiness! Jimmy takes an upbeat and easygoing approach to the late 60s funk sound, with a nice, rubbery bass and the organ sound just killer -- but would expect less from McGriff on that front? Truly funky and totally irresistible stuff, with sinister, measured moments that bigger and heavier pretty quickly - kind of prefiguring 70s blacksploitation soundtrack vibes in spots!
Guilty Simpson- "OJ Simpson" LPx2 (Stones Throw)
Raw gnarly hip hop from rapper Guilty Simpson with beats & production from Madlib. Double vinyl on the Stones Throw label.

Freddie King- "Freddie King Is A Blues Master" CD (Atlantic)
One of my favorite blues albums. Tough & soulful electric blues from 1969.
Big Mama Thornton- "With The Muddy Waters Blues Band 1966" CD (Arhoolie)
In the mid- '60s, Big Mama Thornton was a relatively obscure blues singer known mainly for her original recording of "Hound Dog" in 1953, three years before Elvis had a monster hit with it. Due to a lack of gigs, Thornton had a tough time keeping a steady band on the road and would scramble to gather consistently decent musicians. Fortunately, Arhoolie Records' founder and president Chris Strachwitz had witnessed an amazing performance of the era which had Thornton backed by a group of Chicago musicians who included Buddy Guy on guitar. With that performance in mind, Strachwitz was determined to capture that excellence in the studio. He offered the gig to Muddy Waters, whom he met in San Francisco a few days prior to this session. Muddy accepted and brought with him James Cotton (harmonica), Otis Spann (piano), Sammy Lawhorn (guitar), Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson (bass), and Francis Clay (drums). What came out at Coast Recorders on April 25, 1966 is presented on this 17-track disc including seven previously unreleased cuts. From the low-down gutbucket blues of "Black Rat," and "Big Mama's Shuffle" (featuring both Thornton and James Cotton engaging in a battle of the harps), to the hazy, late-night atmosphere of "Life Goes On," "Since I Fell for You," and "I Feel the Way I Feel," all of this material is absolutely timeless. One can only imagine what would have happened if Big Mama's hopes of recording a gospel album with this band had been fulfilled.
David Bromberg- "S/T" CD (Wounded Bird)
David Bromberg was already a well-known folk instrumentalist before this album proved he was also a top-notch songwriter and an appealing vocalist as well. The styles mix folk, blues, rock, and jug-band music, and the songs alternate from the painfully sensitive ("Sammy's Song") to the rib-tickling "The Holdup," which was cowritten by George Harrison.
The Blasters- "Non-Fiction" CD (Wounded Bird)
When the Blasters released their self-titled album in 1981, Slash Records was an ambitious indie label on the rise, and by the time the group cut their second LP for the label, 1983's Non-Fiction, Slash had signed a distribution deal with Warner Bros. that gave the upstart roots rockers a major-label recording budget for the first time. Non-Fiction sounds bigger and more polished than The Blasters, which doesn't really work in its favor; the tight, lean sound of their previous album suited their music, and the broader, echoey tone of this record somehow makes the band sound littler, like a small combo playing on a huge stage for the first time. But if the production and engineering isn't the best match for this music, it isn't intrusive, and the Blasters sound as strong and focused here as ever. Phil Alvin's vocals are as big and joyous as all outdoors, Dave Alvin's guitar work is sharp as a scalpel, bassist John Bazz and drummer Bill Bateman swing hard and tirelessly throughout, and pianist Gene Taylor, and saxmen Lee Allen and Steve Berlin are better integrated into the arrangements than they were on the previous LP. And while Dave Alvin already demonstrated he was a first-rate songwriter on The Blasters, he had even more to say on Non-Fiction (which featured nine original songs over The Blasters' seven), and "Red Rose"'s tale of star-crossed lovers, the story of Hank Williams' last ride in "Long White Cadillac," and the Depression-era saga of "Jubilee Train" confirm he'd gotten even better in the two years since he'd last gone into the studio. Like Television's Adventure and the New York Dolls' Too Much Too Soon, the Blasters' Non-Fiction followed an instant classic, and seemed like a disappointment on first glance, but give it a listen on its own terms, and it plays like the work of a great band working with heart, soul, and plenty of skill, and it's one of the finest roots rock discs of the '80s.
Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee- "Folk Songs Of" CD (Wounded Bird)
The joyous whoop that Sonny Terry naturally emitted between raucous harp blasts was as distinctive a signature sound as can possibly be imagined. Only a handful of blues harmonica players wielded as much of a lasting influence on the genre as did the sightless Terry, who recorded some fine urban blues as a bandleader in addition to serving as guitarist Brownie McGhee's longtime duet partner.
Alice In Chains- "Black Gives Way To Blue" LP (Virgin)
It's hard not to feel for Alice in Chains -- all the guys in the band were lifers, all except lead singer Layne Staley, who never managed to exorcise his demons, succumbing to drug addiction in 2002. Alice in Chains stopped being a going concern long before that, all due to Staley's addictions, and it took guitarist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez, and drummer Sean Kinney a long time to decide to regroup, finally hiring William DuVall as Staley's replacement and delivering Black Gives Way to Blue a full 14 years after the band's last album. To everybody's credit, Black Gives Way to Blue sounds like it could have been delivered a year after Alice in Chains: it's unconcerned with fashion; it's true to their dark, churning gloom rock; and if you're not paying attention too closely, it's easy to mistake DuVall for his predecessor. There's a difference between desperately attempting to recapture past glories and reconnecting with their roots, and Alice in Chains fall into the latter category. While they'll never be mistaken for a feel-good band, there is a palpable sense of relief that they get to play together again as a band, and what's remarkable is that they still sound like themselves, capturing that weird murk halfway between '80s metal and '90s northwestern sludge, reminding us that we were missing something in their absence. (AMG)
Blakroc- "S/T" LP+CD (Blakroc)
Back in stock. Black Keys team up with various hip hop singers.
Blasters- "Hard Line" CD (Wounded Bird)
After releasing two strong albums for Slash, the Blasters had plenty of critical acclaim and a sizable hometown following, but they hadn't come especially close to landing a hit record, and on the 1985 album Hard Line, they overhauled their approach in the studio in hopes of creating something that sounded more contemporary (and saleable). Producer Jeff Eyrich pumped up the sound of Bill Bateman's drums (and for a few tracks replaced him with Stan Lynch of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), Dave Alvin's guitar tone got thicker and harder, the horn section of Lee Allen and Steve Berlin sat out the sessions, and the emphasis was put squarely on new songs which owed less to rock & roll's past than on the Blasters and Non-Fiction. The Blasters certainly hadn't turned their back on their influences: the Jordanaires, the vocal group that added harmonies to several of Elvis Presley's biggest hits, contributed backing vocals to four cuts, while an impassioned version of "Samson and Delilah" kicked off side two with raw gospel fervor, and "Trouble Bound" and "Help You Dream" showed Dave Alvin's gift for writing in traditional styles was as strong as ever.
Blasters- "S/T" CD (Wounded Bird)
When punk rock began exploding in the late 1970s, more than a few fans of the new music declared the only hope for rock & roll was to throw away its past and start over, but thankfully, a few people knew better than that. Dave and Phil Alvin were a pair of brothers from Downey, CA who'd been raised on a steady diet of what they called "American Music" -- blues, rockabilly, country, jazz, swing, R&B, and early rock & roll, nearly all of it dating back before 1955 -- and they knew the last thing that music needed was to be treated as a museum piece, as so many others treated it in the '70s. The Alvin brothers formed a band called the Blasters that approached the classic styles of the past with the energy and insouciance of punk rock, and their music taught a new generation that rock & roll was hard, wild, and manic fun even before it was called rock & roll. The Blasters cut a fine LP for Rollin' Rock Records in 1980, but it was their self-titled 1981 album for Slash that made them stars in Los Angeles while earning them a loyal following nationwide, and with good reason. The Blasters were a stronger, tighter band when they went into the studio for their second album, and while the production (credited to the group, with Pat Burnette and Roger Harris engineering) was simple, it captured the fire in their performances with greater accuracy and detail.
Jim Lauderdale & Ralph Stanley- "Lost In The Lonesome Pines" CD (Dualtone)
Beyond his devoted alt-country following, Jim Lauderdale is best known as the writer of mainstream hits for superstars like George Strait and the Dixie Chicks. Yet the North Carolina-born singer-songwriter first came to Nashville as a bluegrass picker. And on this exuberant follow-up to I Feel Like Singing Today, their Grammy-nominated 1999 collaboration, Lauderdale and bluegrass king Ralph Stanley, backed by Stanley’s longtime band, the Clinch Mountain Boys, put their voices and hearts together on 14 down-home selections (most written or cowritten by Lauderdale). Cuts range from lighthearted high-lonesome celebrations ("Quit That" and "She’s Looking at Me") to fervent gospel outings like "Zacchaeus," "Oh Soul!" and "Listen to the Shepherd." As both a writer and singer, Lauderdale demonstrates both an abiding affection for and intuitive grasp of bluegrass music.

Behemoth- "Apostatcy"LP (Back On Black)
Behemoth is a Polish blackened death metal band from Gdansk, formed in 1991. They are considered to have played an important role in establishing the Polish extreme metal underground, alongside bands such as Vader, Decapitated, Vesania and Hate. Until the late 1990s, the band played a traditional black metal style with heathen lyrical content, but soon changed to that of occult and thelemic themes written by their lead vocalist Nergal and Krzysztof Azarewicz. With the 1999 release of Satanica, the band showed their presence in the blackened death metal scene, while retaining their own signature style characterized by the drum work of Inferno, multi-layered vocals and Nile-style Middle-Eastern influences. 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION GATEFOLD CLEAR VINYL reissue of Behemoth's 8th album.

Dead Moon- "Dead Ahead" LP (Music Maniac)
Dead Moon, a three-piece from Clackamas, OR, is known for their own particular brand of rootsy garage punk. Their music conjures images of hard-luck easy riders and lovers against the world. While their sound alternates between moody and aggressive, it is always remarkably genuine and energetic. The band is fronted by the husband-wife team of Fred and Toody Cole. Fred began his enduring musical career at the very young age of 15. Many years and many bands later (after living through experiences as varied as homesteading in Alaska, dodging the Vietnam War draft, and hunting bears), the two formed a punk band called the Rats. Later, after adding Andrew Loomis on drums, Dead Moon was formed in 1987. Frequently on the road in Europe, where they have a huge and devoted following, widespread popularity in the U.S. has continued to elude them. For almost a decade, Dead Moon released LPs on their own Tombstone label. All of those releases are vinyl-only and were cut on the same lathe that the Kingsmen's version of "Louie Louie" was cut on back in 1963. In 1991, they began to re-release the vinyl-only albums onto CD through Music Maniac in Europe and eMpTy in the United States, an effort that continued into the new millennium. Sub Pop released the retrospective Echoes of the Past, a collection of Dead Moon songs handpicked by Fred Cole, in 2006.

DJ Shadow- "Diminishing Returns" CD (Repro)
The incredibly welcome release of a mix originally done for the BBC in March 2003, the two-disc DJ Shadow set Diminishing Returns allows fans (or those lucky enough to find one of the thousand-copy official run) a listen in to Josh Davis' country-wide vinyl-scavenging expeditions of the past ten years. The king of all beat-diggers, Davis reportedly owns the largest collection of rap vinyl on the planet, most of it gleaned from the rotting basements of urban record stores (just check out the Scratch DVD to get some flavor). The first disc alone is a gold mine for hip-hop fans, featuring 80 minutes of quick-cut tracks (most of them obscure) along Shadow's interests: early West Coast hardcore, along with plenty of straight-ahead Golden Age hip-hop. The second disc, a 40-minute mix, is similar to Brainfreeze and Product Placement, his collaborations with Cut Chemist, although rather than deep funk it's an eclectic selection of obscure psychedelic rock. An unreleased Shadow production, "War Is Hell," is tacked onto the end.

The Saints- "Prodigal Son" LP (TVT)
From 1988. Chris Bailey returns with another batch of catchy rock songs on Prodigal Son. In retrospect, Hugh Jones' ornate production brought out the best in Bailey's songwriting and gave each song its own identity. There are some standout tracks, like the powerful "Ghost Ships," the acoustic "Shipwreck," the bouncy "Sold Out," and a spirited cover of the Easybeats' "Music Goes Round My Head" (produced by Harry Vanda and George Young).
