    New Stock For The Week!
    Monday, December 17 2012 @ 11:13 CST
    Contributed by: Dave

This will be the last list, and shipment for the next couple of weeks. Most distributors & labels shut down for about a week after Xmas, so there will be new stock arriving in early January. These CD's & LP's will be here on Wednesday.

Gary Clark Jr- Blak & Blu LPx2
Texas blues rock phenom's new full length album on double vinyl. Gary's kind of an amalgam of Jimi/Stevie Ray/Black Keys, and even songs that sound like Prince at times.

Interpol- Turn On The Bright Lights LPx2+DVD
Deluxe anniversary LP set. This is a double LP in a elaborate photo album style gatefold sleeve with a bonus DVD of live performances. The album itself has been remastered, and the 2nd LP contains 9 bonus tracks. Also included is both MP3 & Flac files for all songs, with 8 extra tracks not included on the vinyl! Whew!

    Calvin Keys- Shawn-Neeq LP
In the Early 70′s Jazz hit a high water mark in an expressiveness that was truly free from all boundaries. Music like Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi albums, Chick Corea’s Circle, and even Duke Ellingtons’ output at the time showed the world what freedom truly is. To be able to express, from the heart, the soul, creating whole new universes in sound, tapping into the divine imagination to create a world of American music where anything is possible….What great times. It’s no wonder that guitarist Calvin Keys’ Shawn-Neeq is the shit. Recorded in 1971 for the infamous ‘Black Jazz’ label, Shawn-Neeq grooves, swings, and takes up back to that time when jazz wasn’t scared to say what it wanted to. Calvin, it seems, had a lot to say. 180 gram vinyl on the Tompkins Square label.

Broken Consort- Box Of Birch LP
Richard Skelton's wondrous "Marking Time" was an easy inclusion in our top 10 albums of the year just a short few months ago, but we didn't immediately realise that the artist was responsible for an absolute plethora of projects conceived, realised, beautifully packaged and self-released via his own "Sustain-Release" website over the last few years. It's one of those things, you discover a new artist, get completely obsessed by their work and then discover that beyond the precious little nuggets of material you own there's actually a world of music spread out in handmade limited editions owned by a lucky few individuals prescient enough to have found them in the first place. Out of all of the bespoke editions that we managed to get our hands on, "Box Of Birch" (recorded under the 'A Broken Consort' moniker) has been the one we have been most emotionally attached to, and its with absolute delight that we greet this new edition on the ever-impressive Tompkins Square label. If you've never heard this album before, or indeed any of Richard Skelton's material, you're in for quite a treat, he makes the most intimate and enveloping sounds imaginable from the barest of ingredients - bowed strings, field recordings, piano - and very little else. Each of the four long pieces slowly evolves and changes colour, with a profoundly moving, almost mournful undertone that never ceases to affect us despite having now listened to this album more times than we could possibly remember. Treat this as a second chance to pick up one of the great unknown modern classical albums of recent times - and if you ever see anything this guy is involved with - buy on sight. Incredible. (Online review)
The album first appeared in 2007 as an actual box of birch on Skelton’s own Sustain-Release Private Press. It was ornately and lovingly crafted in memory of his late wife, Louise, combining her artistic output with Skelton’s synergistic compositions. Rereleased this year on a much larger scale by Tompkins Square, the evocative packaging that stood as a memorial to his wife may be lost to more conventional formats, but the music stands as strong as ever.

Saint Vitus- Heavier Than Thou LPx2
Thoroughly ignored outside the deepest heavy metal underground throughout their long career, Saint Vitus only later received some recognition for their crucial influence over the late-'90s/early-2000s doom/stoner metal scene. In fact, it could be argued that Vitus followers such as Sleep and Electric Wizard pretty much learned all their lessons from Heavier Than Thou -- a 14-track collection of Vitus' glory years with SST Records.

    Hawkwind- S/T LPx2
Nice double 180 gram coloured vinyl reissue of Hawkwind's very first album. Pressed in the UK.

    Ramones- Cretin Hop LPx2
LEGENDARY LIVE BROADCAST PERFORMANCE PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED ON VINYL. Featuring rare performances of "Blitzkrieg Bop", "I Wanna Be Sedated" and many more Ramones classics. In addition to the main show, seven bonus tracks are included too, all taken from TV broadcasts across the groups career and include cuts from a 1982 TV special, The Tonight Show in 1992 and Letterman Shows in 1991 and 95 respectively. FANTASTIC 180 GRAM YELLOW VINYL RELEASE. 1000 ONLY LIMITED EDITION.

    Sonic Youth- Sonic Nurse LPx2
Back in stock on double vinyl.

    Lawrence Arms- Oh! Calcutta! LP
2006. Oh! Calcutta! is the fifth studio album from some of Chicago's finest punk rockers, the Lawrence Arms. Always ones for consistency, the album falls easily into the ranks of other releases from the raucous trio; it's a blazing dose of gritty, energetic punk rock with enough attitude to spare through Chris and Brendan's trademark duel vocal assault, which actually trades off more within each song this time than each having their own tracks. Brash, desperate emotion spills over each song with the raw air of being on the verge of breakdown, but it's that same passion that manages to hold everything together seamlessly song after song.

Lawrence Arms- Greatest Story Ever Told LP
Chicago punk bands 4th album from 2003.

Propagandhi- Less Talk More Rock LP
    Back in stock on vinyl.

    Propagandhi- Failed States LP
Back in stock on vinyl. Comes with bonus CD.

Propagandhi- How To Clean Everything CD
    Back in stock on CD.

    Black Angels- Phosphene Dream LPx2
Back in stock after being MIA for many months now.

Lightnin' Hopkins- Lightnin' Sam Hopkins LP
Recorded in Berkeley, CA and Houston, TX during the Winter of 1961-62 for Arhoolie Records, Lightin’ Sam Hopkins' self-titled release features a stripped-down blues trio interpreting some of the most intimate and powerful recordings of Hopkins’ long and storied career. An absolute classic of the electric Texas blues reissued on LP in a deluxe tip-on jacket!

    MGMT- Oracular Spectacular LP
    Back in stock on LP.

Grant Lee Philips- Walking In The Green Corn LP
Latest excellent album from former Grant Lee Buffalo leader. Now resides in the well read singer songwriter category. Hooks galore on this new album.

    Jose Gonzalez- Veneer LP
Back in stock on vinyl. Swedish acoustic songwriter for folks who dig Nick Drake and that ilk of melancholy songwriters.

Grant Green- Blue Break Beats LP
Blue Breakbeats is an essential collection of six of the funkiest breakbeat heavy songs in Grant Green's deep Blue Note catalog. Prolifically sampled by beat thirsty hip-hop producers and stylistically influential in separating Green from Wes Montgomery's ever-looming shadow, these songs were compiled from Green Is Beautiful, Visions, Alive!, Carryin' On, and The Final Come Down by DJ Smash. While certainly nothing new here for the collector, it's a great starter piece for newcomers and those seeking out the original breaks sampled over and over on late 20th century hip-hop records. Playful grooves and classic drumbeats thump underneath some of the slickest jazz guitar work of the 1970s, while stellar instrumentation alone is worth the price of admission. With it being said that these groundbreaking Blue Note soul/jazz records are the foundation of hip-hop, these cuts are brick-by-brick testimonials.

Agnostic Front- Live At CBGB's CD+DVD
Back in stock on this dual format.

    Windhand- CD+LP
Great psyche/doom from Maryland with female singer. You'll like this alot if you're into Canadian band Blood Ceremony. Here on both formats.

Miles Davis- Round About Midnight CD
Back in stock on CD. 1956. Given that 'Round About Midnight was Miles Davis' debut Columbia recording, it was both a beginning and an ending. Certainly the beginning of his recording career with the label that issued most if not all of his important recordings; and the recording debut of an exciting new band that had within its ranks Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, pianist Red Garland, and an all but unknown tenor player named John Coltrane. The title track was chosen because of its unique rendition with a muted trumpet, and debuted at the Newport Jazz Festival the summer before to a thunderous reception. The date was also an ending of sorts because by the time of the album's release, Davis had already broken up the band, which re-formed with Cannonball Adderley a year later as a sextet, but it was a tense year. Musically, this sound is as unusual and as beautiful as it was when issued in 1956. Davis had already led the charge through two changes in jazz -- both cool jazz and hard bop -- and was beginning to move in another direction here that wouldn't be defined for another two years. Besides the obvious lyrical and harmonic beauty of "Round About Midnight" that is arguably its definitive version even over Monk's own, there are the edges of Charlie Parker's "Au Leu-Cha" with its Bluesology leaping from every chord change in Red Garland's left hand. Coltrane's solo here too is notable for its stark contrast to Davis' own: he chooses an angular tack where he finds the heart of the mode and plays a melody in harmonic counterpoint to the changes but never sounds outside. Cole Porter's "All of You" has Davis quoting from Louis Armstrong's "Basin Street Blues" in his solo that takes out the tune, and Coltrane has never respected a melody so much. But it's in "Bye-Bye Blackbird" that we get to hear the band gel as a unit, beginning with Davis playing through the melody, muted and sweet, slightly flatted out until he reaches the harmony on the refrain and begins his solo on a high note. Garland is doing more than comping in the background; he's slipping chord shapes into those interval cracks and shifting them as the rhythm section keeps "soft time." When Coltrane moves in for his break, rather than Davis' spare method, he smatters notes quickly all though the melodic body of the tune and Garland has to compensate harmonically, moving the mode and tempo up a notch until his own solo can bring it back down again. Which he does with a gorgeous all-blues read of the tune utilizing first one hand and then both hands to create fat harmonic chords to bring Davis back in to close it out. It's breathtaking how seamless it all is. There's little else to say except that 'Round About Midnight is among the most essential of Davis' Columbia recordings.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- B.R.M.C. CD
This L.A.-based band (originally hailing from San Francisco) came along just when they were needed most. This self-produced major-label debut boldly plunders a reverb-and-white noise course previously trampled underfoot by long-gone British bands of the late '80s and early '90s (the Jesus & Mary Chain, the Verve, Ride, the Stone Roses, etc.). It all sounds very British, on many levels, despite the fact that only one band member is an Englishman living in exile in the States. On some songs, however, the driving, over-amped guitars (often buzzing with "VU needles-in-red"-type feedback) and pounding drums have a swaggering primeval feel that rivals solid Detroit rock outfits, both old and new (including the Stooges and the Go, to name two).

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- Take Them On, On Your Own CD
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club made an impressive debut in 2001, taking both America and England by surprise while alternative metal ruled the charts. Their psychedelic/space rock/glam-colored blend was hungry to give rock a new face. Three years later and garage rock still reviving the late-'90s pop-soaked scene, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club aims to save a bit of rock & roll with its sophomore effort Take Them On, On Your Own. More gutsy, more aggressive, and more dynamic than B.R.M.C., Take Them On, On Your Own blazes on with an intoxicating presentation from the Brit-American collective; vocalist/bassist Robert Turner and guitarist/vocalist Peter Hayes boasted cocksure appeal on the last album, however Take Them On, On Your Own showcases drummer Nick Jago's powerful presentation, ultimately bringing the trio together. They're fearless and this dozen-track release is all swagger, emotive, and cool.

Frankie Miller- The Complete Chrysalis Recordings CDx4
Frankie Miller was born November 2, 1949, in Glasgow, Scotland; he began singing with local bands beginning in 1967, in a style influenced by American soul singers like Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and Otis Redding.
Retrospective collecting together FRANKIE MILLER's seven studio albums recorded on Chrysalis Records between 1973 and 1980. Having collaborated with, or had his songs covered by, artists as diverse as Thin Lizzy, UFO, Robin Trower, Ray Charles, The Eagles, Bob Seger and Cher, among many others, this versatile singer and songwriter has successfully applied himself to everything from soul and blues, to hard rock and country. 87 tracks.

    Wishbone- Argus CD
Expanded remastered version. One of the UK's best 70's hard rock dual guitar bands. This is one of their best albums that see's songwriting skill intersect with searing guitar work. I never get tired of this one.

Rolling Stones- 4 song ep 7"
RSD replication of the Stones very first 4 track 7" release from 1963. Limited edition.

    Pestilence- Resurrection Macabre LP
In the mid-'80s, thrash metal had its "Big Four" bands -- three from California (Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer) and New York's Anthrax. In the early '90s, technical death metal's Big Four were three Florida acts -- Death, Atheist, and Cynic -- and Pestilence, from the Netherlands. The band released four albums that charted an increasingly progressive and even jazzy trip from metal out into deep space, culminating with the controversial, keyboard-dominated Spheres. The current lineup of Pestilence features vocalist/guitarist Patrick Mameli, bassist Tony Choy, drummer Peter Wildoer, and guitarist Patrick Uterwijk, and has returned not to continue the journey where they left off, but rather to effectively reboot the group and reclaim its place within the death metal pantheon. Track titles like "Devouring Frenzy," "Hate Suicide," and "In Sickness and Death" tell the story; Mameli's new version of Pestilence has much more to do with early albums Malleus Maleficarum and Consuming Impulse than the more intricate, thoughtful material found on Spheres and Testimony of the Ancients.

Woods Of Ypres- Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light CD
Woods 4 was an interstellar leap for Woods of Ypres. Woods 5 is a logical progression, a honing of the unique style the band had carved and a consolidation of David Gold's skills and prowess. The album represents a searing synergy of songwriting mastery, righteous riffs and fathomless vocals. The shorter compositions are tightly focused, circling closely around the band’s mid-paced, blackened doom prerogative.
