    New Stock For The Week
    Tuesday, February 26 2013 @ 01:57 CST
    Contributed by: Dave

These CD's & LP's are all now here. I'll be adding more of the stock that will be arriving on Wednesday very soon.

    Lord Huron- Lonesome Dreams LP
Following two low-profile EPs, Lonesome Dreams is the debut from Michigan-born/Los Angeles-based sound sculptor Ben Schneider and his band Lord Huron. The wide-open pastoral feel of the album seems designed to calm the ongoing argument happening with Schneider's songwriting sensibilities, which seem conflicted between jubilant indie pop wanderlust and stoic traditionally structured Americana. Definitely for fans of Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, My Morning Jacket etc.

    Atoms For Peace- AMOK LPx2
Latest Thom Yorke project with Flea (RHCP) and others. Beautiful double LP in triple gatefold embossed sleeve.

Library Voices- Denim On Denim LP

    Lumineers- S/T LP
The Lumineers, a folk-rock trio out of Denver, Colorado, have a pretty interesting sound, an Americana mesh of folk, rock, and gospel that is similar in tone to the Waterboys, say, or an alt-folk version of Bob Dylan circa Desire, thanks in no small part to Neyla Pekarek's inventive cello. And there are some very good tracks on this debut album, including the chamber honky tonk of "Dead Sea," the delightfully goofy but then ultimately sad and elegant "Submarines," and "Stubborn Love," which manages to be bright and chiming while also being haunting and mournful. Not everything here clicks together at that level, but each track is inventive, and when the songwriting and arrangements cross paths perfectly, as they do in the above songs, this is a delightful band.

    Kelly Willis- Cheater's Game LP
Neither Kelly Willis nor her husband Bruce Robison has made a record since 2008. The singer/songwriters both took time off the road and from recording to raise children. While they've appeared on one another's recordings before, Cheater's Game is their first as a duo. Produced by Brad Jones and recorded in Nashville, this 13-song set features seven new Robison tunes. The balance is made up of songs by some contemporary songwriters, and a couple from Nashville legends. Recorded with a small band in an intimate, retro, '70s style; the album is warm, inviting, and features a seamless meld of the duo's voices.

Rage Against The Machine- S/T LP
20th anniversary reissue of their first album.

    A$AP ROCKY- Long.Live.A$AP LPx2
First edition colored vinyl with bonus CD.

Bad Brains- Into The Future CD
Back in stock on CD. This is their new album.

    Devin Townsend Project- Epicloud LPx2
About the only thing that one can count on from Devin Townsend is not to count on anything at all. His career has continually subverted all previous expectations. Epicloud is the fifth release by the Devin Townsend Project. The previous four -- Ki, Addicted, Deconstruction, and Ghost -- were thematically linked. For fans who wondered where he'd go next, Epicloud was perhaps the least likely direction. It is the most unabashedly mainstream and "pop"-oriented recording of his career thus far. While it doesn't sound like any individual release from DTP's previous quartet, it does have elements of all of them woven throughout these 13 songs. The big news is that Anneke van Giersbergen is ever present here, reprising the role she played on Addicted. She is not only Townsend's foil here, but a shining standout -- she is certainly not a backing vocalist. Given the polish in production here, and the enormous weight the vocals in this mix carry, Townsend needed to be at the top of his game. He is.

    Volbeat- Rock The Rebel LP
    RSD picture disc version.

Cannibal Corpse- Butchered At Birth LP
    New picture disc version.

    Watain- Lawless Darkness LPx2
2010 release from Sweden's Black Metal wolf pack. Double LP with download card.

    Anathema- Weather Systems LPx2
Epic prog metal. A beautiful album.

Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs- Sunday Run Me Over LP
2012 release. Sunday Run Me Over is the second album released in 2012 by Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs, following early spring's Long Distance, a collection of her older garage rock material re-recorded in a distinctly more Americana/honky tonk style. Long the queen of the garage, Holly Golightly's work with her strange partner "Lawyer Dave" acting as the entirety of the Brokeoffs has seen the punk energy that brimmed over in scrappy solo albums (or even more so with work in the early femme-stomp of Thee Headcoatees) shift somewhat into a country-tinged sound, possibly a product of her new environment, as Ms. Golightly left her London home for life on the farm in rural Georgia with Lawyer Dave sometime in the late 2000s. The photo of ducks, dogs, and chickens in the artists' backyard that graces the inside cover of Sunday Run Me Over is a far cry from the gritty dive-bar settings imaginable as the backdrop for Golightly's early solo material, and likewise the music is removed from that early garage grit. The fifth album from the duo finds them working in the country-blues mode they've been cultivating for a while, but with more energy and manic gusto than before.

    Joey Ramone- Ya Know? LP
… Ya Know?, the second Joey Ramone solo album, arrives ten years after 2002's Don't Worry About Me, which in turn was released close to a year after Joey's death, suggesting there's a greater demand and desire for an album from Joey in the 21st century than in the five years that separated the group's breakup and the lead singer's passing. … Ya Know? was pieced together from demos and home recordings, polished by several producers (primarily Ed Stasium and Joey's brother Mickey Leigh) with newly overdubbed backing from a number of Joey's friends and colleagues, and considering its piecemeal origins, the album sounds remarkably coherent and consistent, and the material seems intended to prove Joey was capable of more than just the attitudinal bleat that was his standard vocal trick in The Ramones.

Bryan Ferry Orchestra- The Jazz Age LP
Bryan Ferry (Roxy Music) leads an all instrumental 20's-30's inspired jazz band through a bunch of Roxy Music tracks to wonderful results. "Given that Ferry doesn't sing on The Jazz Age, the appeal for casual fans is debatable, but for the faithful, trad-jazz heads, and open-minded listeners, the musical quality -- from expert arrangements, virtuosic playing, and the brilliant concept -- offer something wholly different and rewarding."

Dream Theater- Images & Words LPx2

Grand Funk Railroad- On Time CD
Back in stock on CD. Early Grand Funk.

    Swingin' Utters- Poorly Formed CD+LP
Seminal street punk legends SWINGIN’ UTTERS keep up the momentum created by their 2011 comeback album with the release of their latest opus Poorly Formed. Not to abuse an obscenely overused cliché, but these guys keep getting better with age. Poorly Formed is anything but what the name suggests. To the contrary, it reflects SWINGIN’ UTTERS’ ever expanding musical proficiency. Obviously they’ve got the punk rock end of the spectrum nailed, and have always had a flare for folk and country as well, but this album sees them hone their indie/post-punk/garage-rock skills. Part of that is due to the emergence of Jack Dalrymple (of One Man Army fame) as a contributing songwriter for the first time since he officially joined the band and started recording with them on their last full-length. Mix that with Johnny and Darius’ well established songwriting prowess, and round it out with their collective pop sensibilities, and what you end up with is a truly unforgettable album. Picture some classic SWINGIN’ UTTERS with a dash of Gang of Four and a pinch of The Strokes, all wrapped up in a bunch of catchy melodies and you’ll start to get an idea of what you’re in for with Poorly Formed. LP version comes with digital download.

    Ride- Nowhere LP
Back in stock. Classic 90's UK shoegaze band. Along with Swervedriver, these guy's wrote the book.

    Nina Simone- Black Gold LP
Black Gold indeed -- as the album's a real classic from Nina, one of the excellent sets she cut with the Stroud Productions imprint during the early 70s! The style here is even hipper than her late 60s work on Philips -- with a mixture of open-ended jazz and soul that's best summed up in the album's extended reading of "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair", and a great version of "To Be Young Gifted & Black", which was written by Weldon Irvine, who's probably playing piano here with Nina. Other titles include the funky "Ain't Got No I Got Life", plus "Westwind", "Who Knows Where The Time Goes", and "The Assignment Sequence".

    Avengers- S/T LP
Though not released until 1983, the Avengers' self-titled record (aka The Pink Album) features the band's recorded output from 1977-78, from the glorious first wave of punk rock. The Avengers were San Francisco's preeminent punk band, led by Penelope Houston's snarling vocals and Greg Igranham's distorted guitar riffs, and one of the first anywhere to feature a female lead singer. 180 gram vinyl reissue of one of punk rock's most important original documents.

    Bob Marley- Legend LP
Always a great seller, this is Bob's greatest hits album. I brought a few copies of this in, because I've been hearing rumblings about it being discontinued at this price point and being reissued. They may be planning some kind of elaborate package. Anyway, it's here now.

Richard Hawley- Standing At The Sky's Edge LP+CD
The cover of Richard Hawley's Standing at the Sky's Edge reveals that something very different is afoot. Given the string-laden, heart-wrenching balladry of Truelove's Gutter, and the orchestrated, tender cibachrome glimpses of a simpler life in and around his native Sheffield on Ladysbridge and Cole's Corner, this is a kick in the head. Hawley has brought his guitar and a basic rock band setup back to the fore on this album, and his references come from the late '60s. Its production is highly textured, expansive, and aggressive. Vinyl comes with bonus CD.

    Tom Waits- Swordfishtrombones LP
    Tom's 80's breakout album. A monumental release.

    Nick Cave- Nocturama LPx2
Back in stock on double LP.

    Grinderman- S/T LP
The story of Grinderman begins within the working processes of another band: Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds. At the start of 2004, when Nick Cave took a small team of Bad Seeds members -- violinist Warren Ellis, bassist Martyn Casey and drummer Jim Sclavunos -- off to the tiny Misère studio in Paris for a songwriting session, they effectively established a new band. The small combo configuration of Nick, Warren, Marty and Jim had its public debut in a showcase performance to promote the Bad Seeds Nocturama album; the foursome continued working in this streamlined format, getting together frequently for Nick Cave “solo” tours. Born of babbling lyrics hatched from Bosch eggshells in the Hyde-bound apocalyptic margins of the Cave brain, the Grinderman sound is an instinctual yawlp that also resurrects the demons of each musician’s past: the trashcan proselytising of Birthday Party -era Nick; Sclavunos’ late 70s New York no-wave noise wisdom; Martyn Casey’s ominous Triffids bass reverb; plus Ellis’ avant-garde soundtrack work and his teenage love of Black Sabbath. Destination: Out! Grinderman sound different from everyone, including themselves. As Memphis Slim put it back in 1941, “While everything is quiet and easy/ Mr. Grinder can have his way.” It’s a new day.

    Grinderman- 2 LP
The first thing that hits you about Grinderman 2 is that you’ve never heard anything like it. The debut album did its job. It defined the band. It marked a clear contrast with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Nick, Warren, Martyn & Jim forged a distinctly different way of working together. They cast off musical baggage, shrugged off accepted wisdom, and tested pre-conceptions about who they were as musicians. In the process, they took to the Bad Seeds hallowed legacy with a baseball bat. Their new album, Grinderman 2 combines the structured invention of their live performance and the unrestrained free-for-all of their studio improvisation. But these guys also know something about the art of writing songs. Grinderman 2 bears the hallmark of its rapturously received predecessor, yet is more open-ended in its structure, more far-reaching in its scope, and gloriously lost in its own transports of noise and rhythm. LP version includes deluxe booklet, poster & complete CD.

Mark Knopfler & Dire Straits- Private Investigations: The Best Of Dire Straits LPx2
    Restock on double LP.

    Grimes- Visions LP
Visions arises as Grimes’ fourth release in less than two years. Incorporating influences as wide as Enya, TLC and Aphex Twin, drawing from genres like New Jack Swing, IDM, New Age, K-pop, industrial and glitch - this approach has marked Grimes as a curator of culture, allowing the project to remain flexible and evolving. Despite an upbeat demeanour, an urgency permeates the album. Calling between our history and the future, it uses the pleasure of minimal rhythms and dance to entice. Yet beyond its rich, software-sculpted cohesiveness and vocal energy, runs a very real and odd world. "Grimes could well be poised for a meteoric rise with the release of her next full length" - Pitchfork.

    Beck- Sea Change LPx2

    Blue Hawaii- Untogether LP
Blue Hawaii, Arbutus Records and many of their Montreal counterparts all began with the same breath in early 2010. To date Blue Hawaii has released an 8 song EP: in May of that year, Blooming Summer (Arbutus Records 2010) was recorded following the pair's travels in Central America. It frames a time of warmth and novelty, featuring dense female harmonies, tape saturated synths, guitars and drum machines. Eventually Ra- returned to her role in BRAIDS, touring constantly, while Ag- moved to Europe, treading deeper into dance music, electronics, and production. Musically, the production on the album is more spacious and physically it was recorded in separation. Despite this, it belongs together in its final form. It demonstrates successful creative process in a pair who composed apart, and in doing so it is a meditation on communication: how technology and art influence modern human relationships. It contains the vast space of two years passing, including watching their Montreal scene change as some launched into international success and others turned deeper inwards. Here, the album finds the conflict of separation/belonging to one's self and community. "‘Untogether’ imagines a world where the Cocteau Twins were produced by Aphex Twin." - Brooklyn Vegan

Lucero- Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers LP
Lucero's 2006 album finally gets its first vinyl release! Re-mastered from the original source audio onto 180g vinyl, all copies come packaged in a gatefold jacket and include an mp3 download coupon.

Jack Johnson- Jack Johnson & Friends: Kokua Festival LPx2
Just in time for Earth Day, Brushfire Records will release Jack Johnson and Friends - Best of Kokua Festival on April 17th. The album features a 13-track compilation of live performances from Jack Johnson's Kokua Festival benefit concert for the Kokua Hawaii Foundation. In support of the release, Johnson will head out with John Cruz and Paula Fuga for an intimate seven-date, all-acoustic tour of the Hawaiian Islands. Tour stops include Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the Big Island. Proceeds from Jack Johnson and Friends - Best of Kokua Festival and the tour will benefit the Kokua Hawaii Foundation. Culled from six years of his eco-minded music festival, Jack Johnson and Friends - Best of Kokua Festival, highlights onstage collaborations with legendary musicians like Willie Nelson, Jackson Browne, Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper, Dave Mathews, Ziggy and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley and more.

    Jawbreaker- Dear You LP
    Vinyl edition back in print.

Roger Knox- Stranger In My Land LP
Roger Knox, aka the Koori King of Country or Black Elvis as he’s known in his homeland, is an Aboriginal Australian Country & Western singer with a honeyed bear hug of a voice. Bloodshot artist Jon Langford (Mekons, Waco Brothers) met Knox on a visit to Australia several years ago. When he heard of Roger and the potentially soon-to-be-lost subculture of this utterly unique cultural collision, Langford knew he had to be involved. Stranger In My Land is a collection of songs originally written by Aborigine artists who were Knox’s peers and predecessors; some tunes previously recorded but difficult to find as well as several unrecorded, handed-down folk songs. Stranger In My Land features guest performances from Bonnie Prince Billy, Kelly Hogan, Dave Alvin (X, Blasters), Sally Timms and Jon Langford (Mekons), The Sadies, Andre Williams, and perhaps the last known recording from Charlie Louvin of the Louvin Brothers.

    Madlib- Shades Of Blue LPx2
Back in stock on double LP.

Cloud Nothings- Attack On Memory LP
In the interval since the release of CLOUD NOTHINGS' self-titled debut album, Dylan Baldi has toured widely and put a great deal of focus on his live show. After playing the same sets nightly for months on end, Baldi saw the rigidity of his early work, and he wanted to create arrangements that would allow for more improvisation and variability when played on the road. To accomplish this desired malleability, the entire band decamped to Chicago, where the album was recorded with Steve Albini. In setting out to do so, Baldi and co. have created an album that shows vast growth in a still very young band.

    Nina Simone- Baltimore LP
After an uncharacteristic (for her) four-year hiatus from recording, Nina Simone returned to the fringes of the pop world with Baltimore, the only album she recorded for the CTI label. While it bears some of the musical stylings of the period -- light reggae inflections that hint of Steely Dan's "Haitian Divorce" -- the vocals are unmistakably Simone's.
Baltimore is an occasionally spellbinding if erratic album, a challenging and worthwhile listen for people ready to dip into the lesser-known entries in Nina Simone's vast catalog.

    Palace- Viva Last Blues LP
1995. This incarnation of Palace, one of its more impressive, sees frontman Will Oldham turning out some of the strongest bleak country-rock in his career and taking the music in a few intriguing and even upbeat directions. With a great supporting cast that includes, among others, Sebadoh's Jason Loewenstein on drums and Oldham's brother Ned on bass, the group busts out laid-back twangy tunes that can really rock when the opportunity comes up.

    Local natives- Hummingbird LP
Both the regular and deluxe vinyl versions are back in stock. Local Natives' sophomore effort, 2013's Hummingbird, is a more atmospheric and introspective collection of songs in contrast to the band's effusive 2009 breakthrough debut Gorilla Manor. Perhaps it has something to do with the parting of bassist Andy Hamm, who left the band in 2011. More likely, it is the influence of producer and the National guitarist Aaron Dessner, who also co-wrote some of the songs on Hummingbird. Whatever the reason, gone is the tribal, post-punk influence of their first album's popular songs like "Sun Hands" and "Camera Talk," replaced here by the lyrical, dreamy, and long-form majesty of cuts like the piano-driven "Breakers," and the sparkling, late-afternooon melancholy of "Ceilings." Which isn't to say the band sounds completely different, or that these songs are any less infectious. On the contrary, Local Natives still showcase a knack for frenetic, percussive segments and layered vocal harmonies that feature lead singer Taylor Rice's evocative croon.

King Khan & The BBQ Show- Invisible Girl LP
While King Khan's star has been rising as the world's leading South Asian R&B shouter with his band the Shrines, it's good to know he still finds time to make music with former Spaceshits bandmate and pal BBQ (aka Mark Sultan), and their third album as a duo, Invisible Girl, shows they still bring out the best in one another. Invisible Girl is just a little less raw than 2006's What's for Dinner?, but the margin's pretty slim -- Khan and Sultan are still churning out wound-up 21st century variations on classic soul, blues, and rock & roll themes, and letting their guitars wail (and BBQ's feet beat out a rhythm) while they wrap their voices around these tunes with ragged-but-right harmonies and some pretty impressive doo wopping on numbers like "Third Avenue" and "Anala." The title of the latter tune points to the band's occasional eagerness to play the bad taste card (the high/low point comes with "Tastebuds"), but for the most part, they take this material pretty straight, and their vocal and instrumental skills get better with each album, through they know their strengths well enough to keep this music from getting anywhere close to slick. And if you can't get a party started behind the riotous "Animal Party," the cool-rockin' "Lonely Boy," or the garage-centric "Truth or Dare," my guess is that you're having-a-good-time license has been revoked. Invisible Girl is no-frills rhythm & blues and rock & roll done right, and the King Khan and BBQ Show get on the good foot with a mixture of sincerity and wailing abandon most of their contemporaries can't match; if this moves a little slower than their previous efforts, they're still crossing the finish line way ahead of the pack.

    Goat- World Music LP
Goat, a collective of musicians from the darkest corner of the Swedish netherworld, might very well be the most mysterious and electrifying band on the planet at the moment. Until earlier this year, noone outside of their remote village had ever heard of them. They have never played a live show outside of their commune. their hometown of Korpolombolo was, according to legend, a hotbed of voodoo worship for centuries after a traveling priestess and her followers were led there by a cipher hidden in their ancient texts. The practice went on for hundreds of years until the Christian church found out what was going on and the village was burned to the ground, the survivors cursing the land as they fled, a curse which still haunts the area to this day. The band members claim that, when they were very young, the village elders initiated them into the entrancing, percussion-heavy musical traditions of their ancestors and that Goat is merely a continuation of a generations old ritual. Maybe their backstory is a work of fiction, or maybe it's true, but if in fact there is a centuries-old voodoo curse coursing through the veins of the music of Goat, we shouldn't be the least bit surprised. There is something almost otherworldly about the music on their debut album "World Music," that much is certain.
The album sounds like a dusty relic from the past, and is shocking in it's scope and execution. there is always a heady mixture of exotic musical styles swirling in the air: tripped out 60's psych rock, turkish stoner funk, blaxploitation soundtracks, thick afro-cuban rhythms, scuzzy detroit prepunk, droning krautrock, indian raja, prog rock, old school west african blues, ethiopian grooves, acid folk, and straight up classic rock guitar riffs--oftentimes blended together into one ferocious mixture over the course of a single composition.
These can't really be called "songs" in the traditional verse/chorus/verse sense, these are long and winding musical pilgrimages, trance inducing spells, and peyote-fed meditations. there are no musical boundaries here.

    Mountain Goats- Transcendental Youth LP
Songwriter John Darnielle has been one of the more prolific figures in indie rock, turning out album after album of his melodically wistful tunes under the Mountain Goats moniker since he started with poorly recorded cassette albums in the early '90s. Transcendental Youth is the 14th proper Mountain Goats album, and it's a dark ride, seeing Darnielle return to the depressive character studies and possibly autobiographical bleak tales that made up some of his most striking work.

    Guitar Wolf- Love Rock LP
To a certain degree, reviewing a Guitar Wolf album is like trying to evaluate a thermonuclear attack -- what are you going to say beyond that there was a huge blast and a whole lotta destruction was left in its wake? Japan's leading leather-clad guitar punishers haven't added a whole lot of new tricks to their repertoire with Love Rock, but like the H-Bomb mentioned, the pinned-in-the-red aural chaos they've made their trademark consistently devastates, and this album offers up still more of the primal howl, amped-up, six-string frenzy and percussion walloping you know and love from these guys. Even if he was singing in English all the time, no one would probably ever know what the hell Seiji is yelling about, but the blasts from his larynx have their own special eloquence, and with titles like "Universe Youth," "Midnight Blood Pump," and "Ultra Might Night," you pretty much know what to expect from the material. The relentless sonic onslaught from this band is a mighty thing to behold, and the song "Demon Card" does offer one example of an interesting production choice -- the band roars like mad in the right channel, while one of Toru's toms quietly thumps in the left. Love Rock is not for the meek of heart, but it's a quality thrill ride for the loud underground. Dig it.

Veronica Falls- Waiting for Something To Happen LP
Waiting For Something to Happen sees the band emerge as one of the most potent and affecting, fully-formed indie guitar pop acts we have around. Beautifully mature and poignant, this marvellously assured second record sees the band throw off the casually morbid references to elegantly distill the essence of an aimless twentysomething existence.. the collective anxieties, tension and confusion of moving from adolescence into fully fledged adulthood.. into a set of immaculately conceived, perfectly wrought pop songs. Musically this album sees the band evolve into a more poised and confident pop entity, the melodies bolder and songs more muscular. Recorded with Rory Attwell (who has worked with everyone from The Vaccines to Male Bonding), these are tracks which spin gorgeous, sun-kissed melodies across their tales of growing pains and romantic dysfunction.
