Charalambides- "A Vintage Burden" CD (Kranky)
The long awaited new album from the legendary Charalambides, now pared down to the original core duo of Christina Carter and Tom Carter. After having exorcized some demons through the release of their last album Joy Shapes, here they have recorded a more melodic song cycle, reminiscent of their earlier albums Union and Market Square. Of particular note is the inspiring guitar work Tom displays on the 18 minute instrumental Black Bed Blues. With A Vintage Burden, Charalambides have delivered their most cosmic and beautiful album to date.
No doubt the godparents of the whole "freak-folk", "free-folk", "new weird america", whatever scene, Charalambides were wandering alone in that arid wilderness when they started recording and releasing their music via cassette in the early '90s. With enough artists now having sprouted to warrant the naming of an entire sub-genre, they are still at the head of the class. Charalambides is where it all started.

Southern rock boys from the mid 70's who weren't afraid to rip off some Led Zep & Deep Purple licks. Toss in some scorching blues licks and you've got the second release from Point Blank.

Om- "Conference Of The Birds" LP (Holy Mountain)
Formed out of 2/3 of the group Sleep, this is Om's 2nd album of soothing (and not so soothing) bass & drum musings with vocals as well. On highly desirable vinyl.

Five Horse Johnson- "The Mystery Spot" CD (Smallstone)
Ohio’s Five Horse Johnson are back at it with a fist full of Skynyrd meets Aerosmith blues. Granted, their version of the blues is stretched over ZZ Top muscle and Page’s Zeppelin-like grease. This has got to be the fifth or sixth release for this corn-fed three piece, and by all accounts their best and most cohesive. Few bands have the knack for embracing a roots-driven vibe like these guys. Clutch and COC come to mind, but 5-Horse are right in there. Maybe it’s the harp played over a straight-ahead rocker like “The Mystery Spot” or the massive bass riff in “Three Hearts” or even the catchy bumpity bump in “Ten Cent Dynamite.” Wherever they find their gin and whiskey, it’s all consuming, completely raw in texture and very addicting.

The Buzzcocks- "Flat Pack Philosophy" CD (True North)
Sure they've been around as long as uncle Fred, but this UK punk/pop group is still hanging in there and what's more, they're creating some mighty fine tuneage. Aggressive as a drunk jock on spring break, plus it's got the hooks that kill. Pete Shelley & his boys have lost nothing over the years.

Tapes 'n' Tapes- "The Loon" CD (Ibid)
Hot out of Minneapolis, Tapes 'n Tapes kneel before Pavement, Wire, Beach Boys, and Pixies, bearing their influences more publically than notebook logo sketches. Could be the sleeper album of '06.

The Riverboat Gamblers- "To The Confusion Of Our Enemies" CD (Recordhead)
Since 2001, Texas' Riverboat Gamblers have cultivated a fanatical following with their rowdy energetic live shows that have led to supporting slots on tours with Flogging Molly, Hot Water Music, Burning Brides, and the MC5, as well as a 2005 stint on the Vans Warped Tour. They also made alot of friends & fans at this year's SXSW festival in Austin. Don't Bury Me will be included in the Vans 2006 Warped Tour compilation on Side One Dummy, and Walk Around Me is included on the Take Action Vol. 5 compilation (Sub City/Hopeless). For fans of good clean punk ala Bad Religion etc.

David Byrne/Brian Eno- "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts" CD (Warner)
A classic, remastered for you the discerning listener. Many bonus songs as well. Even though David Byrne turned into kind of a knob later in his career, he wrote some good stuff when under the wing of Brian Eno.

Sparks- "Hello Young Lovers" LP (In The Red)
Sparks return with their 1st release since 2002's "Little Beethoven". The Mael brothers, Russell & Ron play some quirky artful pop that can't be easily compared to anybody. Longevity must count for something, so pumping out 20 albums in 35 years should get you some respect if for no other reason. Luckily they write some deadly tunes as well.

Josh Rouse- "Subtitulo" CD (Nettwerk)
Josh's newest full length adds to his considerable folk/pop cannon. What makes him stand out from the pack is his top notch skill at coming up with memorable hooks, where so many of his peers pump out alot of blah linear crap. This suckers on heavy duty vinyl.

The Heptones- "Party Time" CD (Island)
What the hell, another great reggae album from the early 80's. The Heptones ruled the Jamaican underground for years with killer albums like this one, "Night Food" & "Cool Rasta". Leroy Sibbles is often praised for having one of the most soulful voices to ever come from the island.

Josh Rouse- "Bedroom Classics Vol.2" CDEP (Bedroom Classics)
JOSH ROUSE is pleased to announce the first release on his new label, BEDROOM CLASSICS, VOL 2, an EP that picks up in a series of which began at the turn of the century with the first volume (which is now discontinued and selling for a premium on Ebay amongst rapid fans and collectors). According to Josh, Bedroom Classics, Vol. 2 consists of 5 tracks, some instrumental and some with my voice. I'm excited about it, it's really moody and different from anything I've put out. Indeed! Largely inspired by Josh's love of film scores, Vol. 2 will be available in limited quantities.

Luminaria- "Arche" CD (Bombworks)
Luminaria has been a stalwart in the Polish underground metal scene for several years now. In late 2003, they recorded 7 tracks for a demo to shop around to labels that featured melodic piano parts, crushing metal guitars, haunting David Bowie-esque vocals, harsh extreme vocals, and gothic overtones for a hauntingly beautiful and heavy sound. Bombworks Records picked up this postgothic metal masterpiece and had Luminaria record an extra bonus track summer of 2005 that did not appear on the original label demo. Luminaria has been favorably compared to Type O Negative, and they have a sound reminiscient of early 90's Saviour Machine, especially if Saviour Machine had incorporated extreme vocals into the mix. If you like your music dark, beautiful, and heavy, Luminaria is your band, and now the whole world can experience their greatness.

An album that has floated around in limbo for years after Daniel's contract was dropped by major label Atlantic Records. Now released on an Austin based label called Gammon.

Everybody knows this is the killer new album from Jack White & pop wunderkind Brendan Benson. So much better than the last White Stripes album that it's embarrasing. Buy 2, it's that good.

Songs Ohia- "The Lioness" CD (Secretly Canadian)
Opening with an epic and ending with a little spartan ode, THE LIONESS is songwriter Jason Molina's fourth and most dynamic and empassioned full-length album to date. Recorded at Chem19 Studio in Glasgow, Scotland, with his Glaswegian friends Aidan Moffat and David Gow of Arab Strap, and Alasdair Roberts of Appendix Out, as well as with Songs: Ohia veterans Geof Comings and Jonathan Cargill, it is, on its exterior, a much darker affair than each of its predecessors. Perhaps it was the Scottish weather and company which gave it such a feel, for at the core of THE LIONESS, there is a warmth and tenderness unmatched by previous Songs: Ohia recordings. Indeed, this is a dark and sultry record, but not a melancholy one. While the last Songs: Ohia album AXXESS & ACE was an album which revealed many of the painful truths about love through its loss, this is an album about the beauty of love as seen from its rich foundational and experiential stages.

Raising The Fawn- "The Maginot Line" CD (Sonic Unyon)
Although John Crossingham has long been part of the extended Broken Social Scene family, his own band Raising the Fawn tends to stand alone, keeping a polite distance from the other collaborative celebrations we usually get from the band’s Toronto cohorts. If you ever see Broken Social Scene in concert, the same can be said for Crossingham’s role in the band; while other members swap lead vocals, provide the central guitar riffs, or lay down memorable solos, Crossingham is off to the side, either playing subtle rhythm guitar or hunched over his effects pedals, creating otherworldly drones. The same goes for his own music, too; while Feist, Collett, and other hustling apostles continue that dozen-people-on-a-stage camaraderie, Raising the Fawn stick to being a simple trio of guitarist, bassist, and drummer, and as they’ve proven over the last couple years, they’re very capable of producing as massive a wall of sound as the dense Scene can.

I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness- "Fear Is On Our Side" CD (Secretly Canadian)
After a lifetime of nightfall and foggy moonlight, I Love You but I've Chosen Darkness creeps out of the shadows with their long-awaited full-length debut, Fear Is on Our Side. The Austin, Texas, band follows up their 2003 self-titled, five-song EP - a much poppier affair produced by Spoon's Britt Daniel - with a dose of thunder and lightning, pain and pleasure. Produced this time around by Paul Barker (Ministry, Revolting Cocks), the record is more sadness than joy with Christian Goyer's lonely lyrics and hauntingly echoed guitar persuaded by Edward Robert's chorused basslines. The sound is coaxing and familiar, Ernest Salaz's textured guitar melodies alternately subtle and entrancing; then howling and anguished. From opening tragic tale "The Ghost," the five-piece echoes past ages and foretells the future. Powerful layers rip through the silence, bonding strength and longing with the weight of a sigh. Reminiscent to latter-era Talk Talk, with the introspection also comes passion. "According to Plan" throbs and gristles through Tim White's pulsating beats that insist on movement. Originally electronically recorded for an Artikal Records 12-inch, the track comes alive here, just as tight as on the original but even darker. Mixing lulling instrumentals ("The Owl") with epic storytelling ("Today We Choose Faces"), ILYBICD breaks out of any genre-specific molds. Since 2001, Chosen Darkness (along with their local predecessors Paul Newman, Windsor for the Derby, and Glorium), have paid their dues by becoming THE band to play with in Austin. Now, it's time to put a sound with the name. Fear Is on Our Side is not trivial or banal. It's not trendy or futile. Fear is a testament to our times, our revolutions, and our meaning. It's timeless, maniacal, and resounding. Darkness and truth.

DRI- "Live @ CBGB's 1984" DVD (Beer City)
Turn down the lights, press play, stand back and you’re there. In the middle of one of the most explosive hardcore sets ever caught on camera. D.R.I. cranked it up and let loose in CBGB's, the spiritual home of hardcore. “Live At CBGB's” is a testament to how good hardcore is, was and can be. This DVD documents a band that never learned how to slow down, take it easy or coast. With D.R.I., it’s always been all or nothing, and CBGB's captures the spirit of D.R.I. This dvd features additional footage from the Masonic Temple in Portsmouth, New Hampshire show which occurred during the same tour, as well as some insane skate footage courtesy of Kristian Svitak.

AFX- "Chosen Lords" CD (Rephlex)
Throughout 2005, and with little fanfare, Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) released the Analord series of 12"s under the AFX moniker on his label Rephlex. In total, 41 tracks were released over a series of singles - Analord Volumes 1-11. Each record went on to sell into five-figure quantities - on vinyl format ONLY! The tracks were not available for download or on CD, making this a considerable sales achievement. For fans of Aphex Twin, it was an almost unprecedented bounty of new material in the gap since the 2001 double album, Drukqs, but many people who have abandoned their turntables will have remained unaware of this hive of activity. Now, Rephlex releases Chosen Lords: rather than release a triple CD featuring all 41 tracks, AFX himself has distilled the tunes into a cohesive album, as it was intended to be heard. Chosen Lords is, in fact, the first full album of new material from Richard D. James since Drukqs, and the word of mouth is that the tracks are among his very best classics.

Band Of Horses- "Everything All The Time" LP (Sub Pop)
Achieving musical transcendence is a tricky feat, almost definitively. If it happens at all, it happens naturally — and perhaps nobody knows that better than Seattle, Washington's Band of Horses. Guitarist/vocalist Ben Bridwell and guitarist Mat Brooke formed Band of Horses in 2004, after the dissolution of their nearly ten-year run in northwest melancholic darlings Carissa's Wierd. Carissa's Wierd trafficked in sadly beautiful orchestral pop, whose songs told unflinching stories of heartbreak and loss, leavened with defeatist humor. And, Band of Horses rises from the ashes of that well-loved and short-lived band. After playing music with each other for over a decade, Bridwell and Brooke picked up together again when Bridwell began fleshing out his compositions post-Carissa's. "It was really just a natural thing we started doing," explains Bridwell. Buoyed by Bridwell's warm, reverb-heavy vocals (which strangely channel a dichotomous blend of Wayne Coyne, Brian Wilson and Doug Martsch,) Band of Horses' woodsy, dreamy songs ooze with amorphous tension, longing and hope. At times raggedly epic ("The Great Salt Lake") and delicately pensive ("St. Augustine," "Monsters"), Everything All the Time is an album painted gorgeously in fragile highs and lows.

Coachwhips- "Double Death" CD+DVD (Narnack)
"In some parts of the world, it's been said that attending a performance of the late, great Coachwhips was not unlike that of a religious experience; the blind began to see, the deaf began to hear, and water turned to wine. It's as if time stood still for 30+ minutes, and there wasn't anyone else in the entire galaxy but John Dwyer, his band and a few hundred electrified, sweaty kids having the longest orgasm on record. It's impossible to dispute this, trust us. Coachwhips combine the bite of six thrash bands playing simultaneously with an uppercut of '60s garage-rock melody - a sound so furious and yet oh-so-incredibly-pop-laced, the second it punctures your eardrum you'll want to French kiss the Earth's entire population. Ravi Shankar- "The Sounds Of India" LP (Columbia)
One of the early works of art created for the West by the Grandfather of World Music. This album stands as an early attempt to teach the curious western listener about the complexity and beauty of Indian music. Composer Alan Hovhaness provides some rather thorough liner notes describing the systems involved in Indian classical music (with the focus clearly on Hindustani forms), and goes into some detail on the finer points of the four ragas performed (Maru-Bihag, Bhimpalasi, Sindhi-Bhairavi, and Pancham-se-Gara, which is played during the piece titled "Dadra," actually a tala). Throughout the album, short lessons in the forms and techniques are given by Shankar himself before the various pieces are performed. For sheer musicality, something like The Genius of Ravi Shankar might be a better choice for a look at the earlier years, but for a historical document of both Shankar's amazing abilities, as well as his love of spreading the word for his music and teaching others, this album is perhaps better. For collectors, both albums would be wonderful additions to the collection, as early examples of World Music making its way into the non-native markets quite successfully. Give this one a number of listens for the music itself, and maybe a spare just for the history in it. AMG

The group witch was born from a marriage of apparently contradictory influences. J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. renown and his long time friend Dave Sweetapple were interested in forming a hard rock band. They found willing and able conspirators in Kyle Thomas and Asa Irons, members New England avant-folk outfit Feathers. On their eponymous debut album, this line-up mounts a mighty sonic tumult that harkens back to classic heavy metal sound of early 70's outfits while still sounding modern in it's assault (and without falling into the ubiquitous "Stoner Rock" pigeonhole).

"[T]he new record by San Francisco duo Matmos. It is a series of "sound portraits" of a pantheon of people that they admire. A musical attempt at biography, it's loose in some places and very literal in others; taken as a suite of stylistically disparate songs, you get a kind of fractured family album, a historical pageant. It's at once Matmos's most melodic and most conceptual record. [Tracklisting:] 1. Roses and Teeth for Ludwig Wittgenstein (conceptual musique concrete) 2. Matmos read their biographies and re-enacted events from their lives, making songs out of the sounds of the re-enactments. They gathered objects that were important to these people, made noises with them, and built melodies out of the noises. Sometimes the songs are just a tight focus on one detail (the Wittgenstein song is just an exploded view of a single paragraph from his text "Philosophical Investigations") and sometimes they revisit one event from their life (the King Ludwig II song re-enacts the incident in which he ordered dinner to be served to his favorite horse inside his castle's Hall of Mirrors with disastrous results). Sometimes they depict their subject abstractly: the Darby Crash song is dark electronics made out of the sound of Drew Daniel crying out in pain getting burned by the Germs' Don Bolles, combined with the noise of M.C. Schmidt shaving his head. The Patricia Highsmith song was made as a collaboration with her favorite animal, the snail (they aimed a laser at a light sensitive theremin, and then got snails to crawl across the path of the laser, triggering changes in the theremin's pitch). Voices are more prominent on this record; there are guest vocals and cameo speeches by Antony, Kalonica McQuesten, Laetitia Sonami, Maja Ratjke, Bjork, and others. The album features Matmos's most extremist and gutsy sound design (the sound of semen, burning flesh, and the embalmed reproductive tract of a cow are all featured) but rubbed up against the most lyrical, heart-on-sleeve music they've ever written (check out Antony's voice on "Semen Song for James Bidgood" or the Kronos Quartet's funereal strings on "Solo Buttons for Joe Meek"). French horns, tuba, strings, harp, darbuka, voice, guitar, drums and synths are chopped into tricky rhythmic patterns and melodic motifs. It's a funkier, funnier affair than their last album, The Civil War (a hallucinatory blend of medieval English folk and 19th century Americana), but also a darker one. The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth Of A Beast is accompanied by ten specially commissioned works of portraiture by such visual artists as Dan Clowes, Jason Mecier, and Michael Bernard Loggins, that depict the subjects of each song."

"Double "best of" 75 song retrospective. Since the early 1990s Boyracer have existed around the singular pop visions of Stewart Anderson. Armed with a selection of fuzzboxes and a carefree revolving door line up, Boyracer have been carefully crafting their buzzsaw assault, shaving seconds off frantic slithers of adrenaline punk-pop. Noted recordings on numerous indie-cred labels such as Sarah Records and Slumberland, and brutally honest sweaty live performances have cemented Boyracer's place in global indiedom as influential stalwarts of the genre.
