Please enjoy these new releases.
Charalambides- "A Vintage Burden" CD (Kranky)
The long awaited new album from the legendary Charalambides, now pared down to the original core duo of Christina Carter and Tom Carter. After having exorcized some demons through the release of their last album Joy Shapes, here they have recorded a more melodic song cycle, reminiscent of their earlier albums Union and Market Square. Of particular note is the inspiring guitar work Tom displays on the 18 minute instrumental Black Bed Blues. With A Vintage Burden, Charalambides have delivered their most cosmic and beautiful album to date.
No doubt the godparents of the whole "freak-folk", "free-folk", "new weird america", whatever scene, Charalambides were wandering alone in that arid wilderness when they started recording and releasing their music via cassette in the early '90s. With enough artists now having sprouted to warrant the naming of an entire sub-genre, they are still at the head of the class. Charalambides is where it all started.
Point Blank- "Second Season" CD (Wounded Bird)
Southern rock boys from the mid 70's who weren't afraid to rip off some Led Zep & Deep Purple licks. Toss in some scorching blues licks and you've got the second release from Point Blank.
Om- "Conference Of The Birds" LP (Holy Mountain)
Formed out of 2/3 of the group Sleep, this is Om's 2nd album of soothing (and not so soothing) bass & drum musings with vocals as well. On highly desirable vinyl.
Five Horse Johnson- "The Mystery Spot" CD (Smallstone)
Ohio’s Five Horse Johnson are back at it with a fist full of Skynyrd meets Aerosmith blues. Granted, their version of the blues is stretched over ZZ Top muscle and Page’s Zeppelin-like grease. This has got to be the fifth or sixth release for this corn-fed three piece, and by all accounts their best and most cohesive. Few bands have the knack for embracing a roots-driven vibe like these guys. Clutch and COC come to mind, but 5-Horse are right in there. Maybe it’s the harp played over a straight-ahead rocker like “The Mystery Spot” or the massive bass riff in “Three Hearts” or even the catchy bumpity bump in “Ten Cent Dynamite.” Wherever they find their gin and whiskey, it’s all consuming, completely raw in texture and very addicting.
The Buzzcocks- "Flat Pack Philosophy" CD (True North)
Sure they've been around as long as uncle Fred, but this UK punk/pop group is still hanging in there and what's more, they're creating some mighty fine tuneage. Aggressive as a drunk jock on spring break, plus it's got the hooks that kill. Pete Shelley & his boys have lost nothing over the years.
Tapes 'n' Tapes- "The Loon" CD (Ibid)
Hot out of Minneapolis, Tapes 'n Tapes kneel before Pavement, Wire, Beach Boys, and Pixies, bearing their influences more publically than notebook logo sketches. Could be the sleeper album of '06.
The Riverboat Gamblers- "To The Confusion Of Our Enemies" CD (Recordhead)
Since 2001, Texas' Riverboat Gamblers have cultivated a fanatical following with their rowdy energetic live shows that have led to supporting slots on tours with Flogging Molly, Hot Water Music, Burning Brides, and the MC5, as well as a 2005 stint on the Vans Warped Tour. They also made alot of friends & fans at this year's SXSW festival in Austin. Don't Bury Me will be included in the Vans 2006 Warped Tour compilation on Side One Dummy, and Walk Around Me is included on the Take Action Vol. 5 compilation (Sub City/Hopeless). For fans of good clean punk ala Bad Religion etc.
David Byrne/Brian Eno- "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts" CD (Warner)
A classic, remastered for you the discerning listener. Many bonus songs as well. Even though David Byrne turned into kind of a knob later in his career, he wrote some good stuff when under the wing of Brian Eno.
Sparks- "Hello Young Lovers" LP (In The Red)
Sparks return with their 1st release since 2002's "Little Beethoven". The Mael brothers, Russell & Ron play some quirky artful pop that can't be easily compared to anybody. Longevity must count for something, so pumping out 20 albums in 35 years should get you some respect if for no other reason. Luckily they write some deadly tunes as well.
Josh Rouse- "Subtitulo" CD (Nettwerk)
Josh's newest full length adds to his considerable folk/pop cannon. What makes him stand out from the pack is his top notch skill at coming up with memorable hooks, where so many of his peers pump out alot of blah linear crap. This suckers on heavy duty vinyl.
Thievery Corporation- "Versions" CD (ESL)
Thievery Corporation is happy to announce the latest addition to their catalogue, Versions is in stores worldwide right now. Versions is the ultimate collection of Thievery Corporation remixes features 18 dubbed-out versions of songs from The Doors, Sarah McLachlan, Astrud Gilberto, Nouvelle Vague, Wax Poetic feat. Howlin Rain- "S/T " CD (Birdman)
* Ethan Miller (singer, guitarist for Comets on Fire) on vocal, guitar and songwriting duties
* John Moloney (leader of Boston’s great improv shamans “Sun Burned Hand of the Man”) on drums and percussion and
* Ian Gradek (iron worker, world traveler) on bass guitar and banjo.
Ethan Miller: “We put Howlin’ Rain together with the intention of making a good old fashioned free-wheeling rock album with a bared soul and a body in which Joy, hysteria and Darkness all lie upon the same rambling bones. We make music to beat the steering wheel of your van to or sing along with while drinking whiskey in the bathtub on a Saturday night with your dog. “
Neil Young- "Living With War" CD (Reprise)
Neil get's all finger waggin' & preachy on his new cd. No stones are left unturned as original subject matter including (get ready for this) the WAR IN IRAQ are brought to light. Neil's got global warming in his sights next.
Andre Williams- "Silky" CD (In The Red)
This 70 something is the original "Dirty Old Man" who along with buddy Mick Collins (Gories, Dirtbombs etc.) writes and plays some of the raunchiest & coolest garage rock this side of Vivid Valley. One of my top 100 albums of all time.
Drive By Truckers- "A Blessing & A Curse" CD (New West)
It's finally out and will be here wednesday.
Black Uhuru- "Anthem" CD (Palm Pictures)
A reggae highwater mark with contributions from Sly & Robbie and the pure roots vocals of Michael Rose. A great intro if you ever wanted to get a solid reggae album, but didn't know where to start.
The Heptones- "Party Time" CD (Island)
What the hell, another great reggae album from the early 80's. The Heptones ruled the Jamaican underground for years with killer albums like this one, "Night Food" & "Cool Rasta". Leroy Sibbles is often praised for having one of the most soulful voices to ever come from the island.
Josh Rouse- "Bedroom Classics Vol.2" CDEP (Bedroom Classics)
JOSH ROUSE is pleased to announce the first release on his new label, BEDROOM CLASSICS, VOL 2, an EP that picks up in a series of which began at the turn of the century with the first volume (which is now discontinued and selling for a premium on Ebay amongst rapid fans and collectors).
According to Josh, Bedroom Classics, Vol. 2 consists of 5 tracks, some instrumental and some with my voice. I'm excited about it, it's really moody and different from anything I've put out. Indeed! Largely inspired by Josh's love of film scores, Vol. 2 will be available in limited quantities.
Luminaria- "Arche" CD (Bombworks)
Luminaria has been a stalwart in the Polish underground metal scene for several years now. In late 2003, they recorded 7 tracks for a demo to shop around to labels that featured melodic piano parts, crushing metal guitars, haunting David Bowie-esque vocals, harsh extreme vocals, and gothic overtones for a hauntingly beautiful and heavy sound. Bombworks Records picked up this postgothic metal masterpiece and had Luminaria record an extra bonus track summer of 2005 that did not appear on the original label demo. Luminaria has been favorably compared to Type O Negative, and they have a sound reminiscient of early 90's Saviour Machine, especially if Saviour Machine had incorporated extreme vocals into the mix. If you like your music dark, beautiful, and heavy, Luminaria is your band, and now the whole world can experience their greatness.
Daniel Johnston- "Rejected Unknown" CD (Gammon)
An album that has floated around in limbo for years after Daniel's contract was dropped by major label Atlantic Records. Now released on an Austin based label called Gammon.

The Pogues- "Rum Sodomy & The Lash" CD (Warner)
Restock of this great cd from the 80's. Those who know, know. Those who don't should know that the Pogues were highly original in their take on Irish folk music and the way they blended it with contemporary rock. Favorites of the Clash.Vocalist Shane MacGowan had the rottenest teeth on the planet.
The Pogues- "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" CD (Warner)
Probably their best selling album due to the popularity of the song "Fairytale of New York".
Brian Setzer- "Rockabilly Riot" CD (Cargo)
Brian Setzer delves into the history of the legendary Sun Records label and rocks out 23 1950s Rockabilly blasters. The arrangements remain true to the originals, with Setzer unique sound being stamped firmly upon them, handling his Gretsch guitar like no other.
The material selected ranges from classic to rare - with Gene Simmons' 'Peroxide Blonde...' being available in complete form for the first time ever. Other artists covered include Warren Smith, Ray Harris, Carl Perkins, Jack Earls, Billy Lee Riley, Carl Mann, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and many more.
A totally rockin' and sincere tribute to the original Kings of Rockabilly from one of today's.
Raconteurs- "Broken Boy" CD (V2)
Everybody knows this is the killer new album from Jack White & pop wunderkind Brendan Benson. So much better than the last White Stripes album that it's embarrasing. Buy 2, it's that good.
Songs Ohia- "The Lioness" CD (Secretly Canadian)
Opening with an epic and ending with a little spartan ode, THE LIONESS is songwriter Jason Molina's fourth and most dynamic and empassioned full-length album to date. Recorded at Chem19 Studio in Glasgow, Scotland, with his Glaswegian friends Aidan Moffat and David Gow of Arab Strap, and Alasdair Roberts of Appendix Out, as well as with Songs: Ohia veterans Geof Comings and Jonathan Cargill, it is, on its exterior, a much darker affair than each of its predecessors. Perhaps it was the Scottish weather and company which gave it such a feel, for at the core of THE LIONESS, there is a warmth and tenderness unmatched by previous Songs: Ohia recordings. Indeed, this is a dark and sultry record, but not a melancholy one. While the last Songs: Ohia album AXXESS & ACE was an album which revealed many of the painful truths about love through its loss, this is an album about the beauty of love as seen from its rich foundational and experiential stages.
Raising The Fawn- "The Maginot Line" CD (Sonic Unyon)
Although John Crossingham has long been part of the extended Broken Social Scene family, his own band Raising the Fawn tends to stand alone, keeping a polite distance from the other collaborative celebrations we usually get from the band’s Toronto cohorts. If you ever see Broken Social Scene in concert, the same can be said for Crossingham’s role in the band; while other members swap lead vocals, provide the central guitar riffs, or lay down memorable solos, Crossingham is off to the side, either playing subtle rhythm guitar or hunched over his effects pedals, creating otherworldly drones. The same goes for his own music, too; while Feist, Collett, and other hustling apostles continue that dozen-people-on-a-stage camaraderie, Raising the Fawn stick to being a simple trio of guitarist, bassist, and drummer, and as they’ve proven over the last couple years, they’re very capable of producing as massive a wall of sound as the dense Scene can.
Fireball Ministry- "Their Rock Is Not Our Rock" CDx2 (Liquor & Poker)
On Their Rock is Not Our Rock, Fireball Ministry offer another helping of part stoner, part biker metal… In this day and age, any group that sticks to their guns and doesn’t give in to the mainstream should be commended, and Fireball Ministry refuse to buckle.

Dare - Gorillaz 8. Orange Alert - Metro Area 9. (Just Like We) Breakdown - Hot Chip.
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness- "Fear Is On Our Side" CD (Secretly Canadian)
After a lifetime of nightfall and foggy moonlight, I Love You but I've Chosen Darkness creeps out of the shadows with their long-awaited full-length debut, Fear Is on Our Side. The Austin, Texas, band follows up their 2003 self-titled, five-song EP - a much poppier affair produced by Spoon's Britt Daniel - with a dose of thunder and lightning, pain and pleasure.
Produced this time around by Paul Barker (Ministry, Revolting Cocks), the record is more sadness than joy with Christian Goyer's lonely lyrics and hauntingly echoed guitar persuaded by Edward Robert's chorused basslines. The sound is coaxing and familiar, Ernest Salaz's textured guitar melodies alternately subtle and entrancing; then howling and anguished. From opening tragic tale "The Ghost," the five-piece echoes past ages and foretells the future. Powerful layers rip through the silence, bonding strength and longing with the weight of a sigh.
Reminiscent to latter-era Talk Talk, with the introspection also comes passion. "According to Plan" throbs and gristles through Tim White's pulsating beats that insist on movement. Originally electronically recorded for an Artikal Records 12-inch, the track comes alive here, just as tight as on the original but even darker. Mixing lulling instrumentals ("The Owl") with epic storytelling ("Today We Choose Faces"), ILYBICD breaks out of any genre-specific molds.
Since 2001, Chosen Darkness (along with their local predecessors Paul Newman, Windsor for the Derby, and Glorium), have paid their dues by becoming THE band to play with in Austin. Now, it's time to put a sound with the name. Fear Is on Our Side is not trivial or banal. It's not trendy or futile. Fear is a testament to our times, our revolutions, and our meaning. It's timeless, maniacal, and resounding. Darkness and truth.
DRI- "Live @ CBGB's 1984" DVD (Beer City)
Turn down the lights, press play, stand back and you’re there. In the middle of one of the most explosive hardcore sets ever caught on camera. D.R.I. cranked it up and let loose in CBGB's, the spiritual home of hardcore. “Live At CBGB's” is a testament to how good hardcore is, was and can be. This DVD documents a band that never learned how to slow down, take it easy or coast. With D.R.I., it’s always been all or nothing, and CBGB's captures the spirit of D.R.I. This dvd features additional footage from the Masonic Temple in Portsmouth, New Hampshire show which occurred during the same tour, as well as some insane skate footage courtesy of Kristian Svitak.
Abrasive Wheels- "When The Punks Go Marchin' In" LP (Get Back)
22 trax of classic UK oi! For fans of GBH/Exploited etc. This was their debut from 1982.
AFX- "Chosen Lords" CD (Rephlex)
Throughout 2005, and with little fanfare, Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) released the Analord series of 12"s under the AFX moniker on his label Rephlex. In total, 41 tracks were released over a series of singles - Analord Volumes 1-11. Each record went on to sell into five-figure quantities - on vinyl format ONLY! The tracks were not available for download or on CD, making this a considerable sales achievement. For fans of Aphex Twin, it was an almost unprecedented bounty of new material in the gap since the 2001 double album, Drukqs, but many people who have abandoned their turntables will have remained unaware of this hive of activity. Now, Rephlex releases Chosen Lords: rather than release a triple CD featuring all 41 tracks, AFX himself has distilled the tunes into a cohesive album, as it was intended to be heard. Chosen Lords is, in fact, the first full album of new material from Richard D. James since Drukqs, and the word of mouth is that the tracks are among his very best classics.
Band Of Horses- "Everything All The Time" LP (Sub Pop)
Achieving musical transcendence is a tricky feat, almost definitively. If it happens at all, it happens naturally — and perhaps nobody knows that better than Seattle, Washington's Band of Horses. Guitarist/vocalist Ben Bridwell and guitarist Mat Brooke formed Band of Horses in 2004, after the dissolution of their nearly ten-year run in northwest melancholic darlings Carissa's Wierd. Carissa's Wierd trafficked in sadly beautiful orchestral pop, whose songs told unflinching stories of heartbreak and loss, leavened with defeatist humor. And, Band of Horses rises from the ashes of that well-loved and short-lived band. After playing music with each other for over a decade, Bridwell and Brooke picked up together again when Bridwell began fleshing out his compositions post-Carissa's. "It was really just a natural thing we started doing," explains Bridwell. Buoyed by Bridwell's warm, reverb-heavy vocals (which strangely channel a dichotomous blend of Wayne Coyne, Brian Wilson and Doug Martsch,) Band of Horses' woodsy, dreamy songs ooze with amorphous tension, longing and hope. At times raggedly epic ("The Great Salt Lake") and delicately pensive ("St. Augustine," "Monsters"), Everything All the Time is an album painted gorgeously in fragile highs and lows.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!- "Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!" LP+CD (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah)
Big buzz band from NYC with heavy Talking Heads tendencies.
Coachwhips- "Double Death" CD+DVD (Narnack)
"In some parts of the world, it's been said that attending a performance of the late, great Coachwhips was not unlike that of a religious experience; the blind began to see, the deaf began to hear, and water turned to wine. It's as if time stood still for 30+ minutes, and there wasn't anyone else in the entire galaxy but John Dwyer, his band and a few hundred electrified, sweaty kids having the longest orgasm on record. It's impossible to dispute this, trust us. Coachwhips combine the bite of six thrash bands playing simultaneously with an uppercut of '60s garage-rock melody - a sound so furious and yet oh-so-incredibly-pop-laced, the second it punctures your eardrum you'll want to French kiss the Earth's entire population. If you never had the chance to attend one of their shows, this is the set for you. The DVD features previously unseen footage chronicling the band's short but magnificent career, from their house party days to their sticky final show, while the CD showcases 47 minutes of the rare and B-side tunes which were virtually impossible to find prior to this release."
Crass- "Best Before 1984" CD (Crass)
Restock.
Crass- "Christ, The Album" CD (Crass)

Don Caballero- "World Class Listening Problem" CD (Relapse)
The legendary Don Caballero have re-emerged! Inarguably one of the most celebrated, influential and innovative bands in recent times, Don Caballero is the vanguard of progressive, instrumental music. With World Class Listening Problem, its first full-length album in almost 5 years, Don Cab prove once again that they are head and shoulders above their peers. The bands powerful, percussive-heavy sonic advance is more dense, more expansive, and burns with a new-found urgency. World Class Listening Problem is prime Don Caballero and an indispensable addition to the illustrious Don Cab canon.
Eraserhead- "Eraserhead" DVD (Absurda)
Restock again, of this cinema classic. David Lynch's directorial debut. This is as weird as it gets.
Fax- "Primario" CD (Static Discos)
"Fax returns with his third full length for Static Discos, a new collection of songs that signal an alternate sound path in the Fax template. Whereas Fax's previous albums were inspired by discrete minimal techno and microhouse, Primario focuses on a slow rocking, almost ambient, low end invisible soundtrack full of lights and shades. The stance on the new album is a meditative construction of tracks which feature and array of contributions by Alex Ayuli (A.R. Kane), Fernando Corona (Murcof), Ignacio Chavez (Kobol) and Kate Simko (Detalles), producing a beautiful collection of music that slides in between the sound works of later Talk Talk, Bark Psychosis and the collaborations of Burnt Friedman with Jaki Liebezeit. Fax's electronic signature sound is still intact on Primario, but slowed down for maximum effect, creating a rich and lush album full of dubby atmospheric tones, whispered rhythms and melodic oceanic songs."
Hecate- "Brew Hideous" CD (Sublight)
"Based around the destruction and murder of countless hordes of men and women for their Heresy and Blasphemy of the decrepit Church Hecate's "Brew Hideous" album is by far her most ambitious. Like a sonic nightmare mutating and transforming live instruments, mainly guitars, synths and Rachael Kozak's own growling vocals "Brew Hideous" mixes elements of Black metal, brutalizing breakcore and esoteric sound design with top notch production values. 10 violent and mysterious tracks from the most prolific female artist in hard electronic music. featuring guest appearances by Vile Enginez, Mandragore, Leech and others."
The Hidden Hand- "Mother Teacher Destroyer" CD (Southern Lord)

Lou's most recognizable work on the deluxe LP format. Contains "Take A Walk On The Wild Side".
Ravi Shankar- "The Sounds Of India" LP (Columbia) One of the early works of art created for the West by the Grandfather of World Music. This album stands as an early attempt to teach the curious western listener about the complexity and beauty of Indian music. Composer Alan Hovhaness provides some rather thorough liner notes describing the systems involved in Indian classical music (with the focus clearly on Hindustani forms), and goes into some detail on the finer points of the four ragas performed (Maru-Bihag, Bhimpalasi, Sindhi-Bhairavi, and Pancham-se-Gara, which is played during the piece titled "Dadra," actually a tala). Throughout the album, short lessons in the forms and techniques are given by Shankar himself before the various pieces are performed. For sheer musicality, something like The Genius of Ravi Shankar might be a better choice for a look at the earlier years, but for a historical document of both Shankar's amazing abilities, as well as his love of spreading the word for his music and teaching others, this album is perhaps better. For collectors, both albums would be wonderful additions to the collection, as early examples of World Music making its way into the non-native markets quite successfully. Give this one a number of listens for the music itself, and maybe a spare just for the history in it. AMG
Suicidal Tendencies- (Join The Army) CD (Virgin)
Restock.
Sunset Rubdown- "Shut Up I Am Dreaming" CD (Global Symphonic)
Solo cd from one of the Wolf Parade dudes.
The Unintended- "The Unintended" CD ( Bluefog)

Rick White- "The Rick White Album" CD+LP (Bluefog)
The man behind Eric's Trip & Elevator releases his 1st solo album of accoustic psyche pop. For fans of both these bands, as well as Syd Barrett and early Floyd.
Witch- "Witch" CD (Tee Pee)
The group witch was born from a marriage of apparently contradictory influences. J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. renown and his long time friend Dave Sweetapple were interested in forming a hard rock band. They found willing and able conspirators in Kyle Thomas and Asa Irons, members New England avant-folk outfit Feathers. On their eponymous debut album, this line-up mounts a mighty sonic tumult that harkens back to classic heavy metal sound of early 70's outfits while still sounding modern in it's assault (and without falling into the ubiquitous "Stoner Rock" pigeonhole).
X- "Los Angeles" LP 180gram (Slash) Their 1st LP from 1980. Contains "Johnny Hit & Run Pauline". A punk neccesity.
Detroit Cobras- "Baby" CD (Bloodshot)
Their latest from a few months back which contains the "7 easy pieces" ep tacked on for good measure. Good rockin' garage stomp with a heavy dose of soul vocals from the uber hot Rachel Nagy.
Tool- "Undertow" LPx2 (Zoo)
Restock on double LP. This always goes fast.
Boris- "Pink" CD (Southern Lord)
"Over the past couple years Japan's most powerful power trio ever has gone from underground cult obscurity to a critically acclaimed and must hear band. Beginning in 2000 with Absolutego, then 2003's Amplifier Worship, and last year's Akuma No Uta, each album gets stronger and gathers a larger following then the one that proceeded it. Last year also saw Boris finally bring their incredible live show to US shores for select sold out dates on the East and West Coasts. Continuing with their extremely prolific output, Southern Lord is proud to unleash the brand new studio album from Boris: Pink. Followers of the band already know that each release Boris will do something unexpected, entirely unique, and continually forging in a new direction. Pink is absolutely no exception! However, for possibly the first time these new recordings effectively combine all the strongest elements of what Boris is capable of into one solid, complete, concise album. The mega-drone of Amplifier Worship is apparent in songs like: ("Blackout"), the balls-out punk rock is evident ("Nothing Special", "Six, Three Times"), extreme dark-psychedelia manifests itself ("Afterburner", "My Machine") and the 70s' fuzzed out acid rock is represented in foot stomping tracks like the title track and "Women On the Screen". The clincher on Pink and new element that is brought to the table is a infusion of ultra-catchy melodicism into their already heavy foundation. The album opener and closer as well as title track contain infectious vocal melodies that combined with intelligent song-writing create a solidified, undeniable union. As with all previous Boris releases on Southern Lord, the packaging is uniquely psychedelic with the utmost attention to detail created by Stephen O' Malley. Pink come with a die-cut cover that when opened reveals three perforated acid-tab cards!"
Godspeed You Black Emperor- "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" CDx2 (Kranky)
Restock.
Matmos- "The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth Of The Beast" CD (Matador)
"[T]he new record by San Francisco duo Matmos. It is a series of "sound portraits" of a pantheon of people that they admire. A musical attempt at biography, it's loose in some places and very literal in others; taken as a suite of stylistically disparate songs, you get a kind of fractured family album, a historical pageant. It's at once Matmos's most melodic and most conceptual record. [Tracklisting:] 1. Roses and Teeth for Ludwig Wittgenstein (conceptual musique concrete) 2. Steam and Sequins for Larry Levan (mutant disco) 3. Tract for Valerie Solanas (booty bass) 4. Public Sex for Boyd McDonald (porn funk) 5. Semen Song for James Bidgood (weepy elegy) 6. Snails and Lasers for Patricia Highsmith (jazz noir) 7. Germs Burn for Darby Crash (power electronics) 8. Solo Buttons for Joe Meek (surf twang) 9. Rag for William S. Burroughs (Arabic ragtime psychedelia) 10. Banquet for King Ludwig II of Bavaria (Wagnerian slapstick). Matmos read their biographies and re-enacted events from their lives, making songs out of the sounds of the re-enactments. They gathered objects that were important to these people, made noises with them, and built melodies out of the noises. Sometimes the songs are just a tight focus on one detail (the Wittgenstein song is just an exploded view of a single paragraph from his text "Philosophical Investigations") and sometimes they revisit one event from their life (the King Ludwig II song re-enacts the incident in which he ordered dinner to be served to his favorite horse inside his castle's Hall of Mirrors with disastrous results). Sometimes they depict their subject abstractly: the Darby Crash song is dark electronics made out of the sound of Drew Daniel crying out in pain getting burned by the Germs' Don Bolles, combined with the noise of M.C. Schmidt shaving his head. The Patricia Highsmith song was made as a collaboration with her favorite animal, the snail (they aimed a laser at a light sensitive theremin, and then got snails to crawl across the path of the laser, triggering changes in the theremin's pitch). Voices are more prominent on this record; there are guest vocals and cameo speeches by Antony, Kalonica McQuesten, Laetitia Sonami, Maja Ratjke, Bjork, and others. The album features Matmos's most extremist and gutsy sound design (the sound of semen, burning flesh, and the embalmed reproductive tract of a cow are all featured) but rubbed up against the most lyrical, heart-on-sleeve music they've ever written (check out Antony's voice on "Semen Song for James Bidgood" or the Kronos Quartet's funereal strings on "Solo Buttons for Joe Meek"). French horns, tuba, strings, harp, darbuka, voice, guitar, drums and synths are chopped into tricky rhythmic patterns and melodic motifs. It's a funkier, funnier affair than their last album, The Civil War (a hallucinatory blend of medieval English folk and 19th century Americana), but also a darker one. The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth Of A Beast is accompanied by ten specially commissioned works of portraiture by such visual artists as Dan Clowes, Jason Mecier, and Michael Bernard Loggins, that depict the subjects of each song."
Operation Ivy- "Energy" CD ( Lookout)

Boyracer- "Punker Than You Since '92" 2xCD (555)
"Double "best of" 75 song retrospective. Since the early 1990s Boyracer have existed around the singular pop visions of Stewart Anderson. Armed with a selection of fuzzboxes and a carefree revolving door line up, Boyracer have been carefully crafting their buzzsaw assault, shaving seconds off frantic slithers of adrenaline punk-pop. Noted recordings on numerous indie-cred labels such as Sarah Records and Slumberland, and brutally honest sweaty live performances have cemented Boyracer's place in global indiedom as influential stalwarts of the genre. This double disc set, on the band's own 555 Recordings label, features 75 selections from their exhaustive back catalogue. The tracks chosen (by Stewart) span the band's global history from Leeds, UK to Flagstaff, Arizona, via stints in Japan and Australia. Forever embracing the DIY ethic to excess, Boyracer are known for their completists nightmare of a back catalogue, (with nearly 500 songs on commercially available releases to date). Punker Than You Since '92 includes much of the band's best known and strongest material coupled with long out of print tracks, (including the impossible to find debut 7" unavailable anywhere since it's release in 1992). There are tracks from strictly limited releases too, such as 2005's lathe cut 10" LP (which was a pressing of 75 copies worldwide). The compilation is a welcome round-up for diehards, a chance to fill in some gaps for the casual observer, and is also a perfect introduction for the new and curious to one of indiepop's longest standing and respected bands."
FRED EAGLESMITH- "Milly's Cafe" CD (AML)
"Milly's Cafe is Fred Eaglesmith's sixteenth release. It's raw, bare-boned and totally Fred. As his career has progressed, Fred's mercurial song writing has defied description but has been pegged as bluegrass, folk, country and even rock n' roll. His rootsy songs reflect and comment on life and how we live it. With his new album, Milly's Cafe, Eaglesmith's smokey voice delivers songs that expose everything from the hard knock life of truckers "18 Wheels", thieves and cowboys, "Milly's Cafe", "Rocky" to the soft twilight beauty of the prairies "Kansas". Eaglesmith's lyrics turn the lives of everyday people into poem and song. From his beginnings with self-titled debut album Fred J. Eaglesmith to the present, Eaglesmith's lyric-driven songs have enticed audiences across the country."
FLOWER TRAVELLIN' BAND- "Satori" LP (Radioactive Records)
LP version, gatefold sleeve, numbered edition of 1000 copies. "Satori is a conceptual hard rock-psych album driven by Hideki Ishima's furious guitar licks which erupt and explode over the harmonic heart beat of the drums and bass and Yamanaka's banshee-like vocal style which was turning him into an occidental Iggy Pop or Ozzy Osbourne while the band itself was rapidly becoming Japan's answer to Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath. Satori is a huge album in every way. From power chords to Eastern-tinged North African six string freak-outs and crashing tom-toms, the band flexes its collective muscle from start to finish. In short, this is a real rock classic of the type they simply don't make any more."
FILTHY THIEVING BASTARDS- "My Pappy Was A Pistol" CD (BYO)
"Something of a side-project supergroup. Consisting of members of the Swingin' Utters, Camper Van Beethoven, and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Filthy Thievin' Bastards boast one of the most wildly eclectic sounds in all of post-punk rock & roll. On this, their second full-length album, they careen crazily from Pogues-flavored rock & reel (Spider Stacy makes a guest appearance on tin whistle and vocals) to queasy honky tonk country, and from a weird sort of ersatz Latin pop, to beer-swilling shoutalongs. By adding their own cheerfully beery mix of punk, country, and Latin to the mix they do ultimately succeed at making the resulting sound their own. Recommended."-AMG
AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED- "PCP Torpedo" 2xCD (Hydrahead)
"Originally released in the final year of the 20th century in the unconventional 6" vinyl format, PCP Torpedo is finally reissued on CD-- in the equally unconventional 3" CD format. The hideously deformed and many-fanged suckling of guitarist/machinist Scott Hull (also of equally unstoppable Pig Destroyer) and vocalist/programmer J. Randall (formally of Isis), ANB specialize in stereophonic slaughter and extreme pharmacological distress, the combination of which is commonly referred to (in the pariance of shitty metal mags) as "hyper-grind"."
SCISSORFIGHT- "Jaggernaut" CD (Tortuga)
"The sagacious Granite State Destroyers return with what just might be their most full realized slab of unbridled turpitude to date: Scissorfight's fifth full length, Jaggernaut, is at once an act of civil disobedience, and exploration of the primal psyche, and a celebration of the tried and true tradition of backwoods motherfuckery. See why press from coast to coast are losing their minds over Scissorfight."
AIDS WOLF- "The Lovvers" CD (Love Pump)
"A noisy experimental band with "improv tendencies," AIDS Wolf are good friends with the Unicorns, Wolf Parade, and others in the Montreal indie scene, but their chaotic sound has much more to do with Whitehouse and An Albatross, two bands they've shared the stage with."
BIGWIG- "Reclamation" CD (Fearless)
"Bigwig's most mature album to date, Reclamation lacks the more immediate catchiness and playful charm of their prior albums, but the band makes it up in sheer aggression and vigor. As the album finds them playing as strong as ever, fingers crossed one won't have to wait another five years for Bigwig's next offering to surface."
BACKYARD BABIES- "People Like People Like People Like Us" CD (Abacus)
"The Backyard Babies -a raw tattoo that rocks sonically with brazen heart and voluminous punch. On their newest effort, People Like People Like People Like Us, Backyard Babies' guitarist extraordinaire Dregen found himself reunited in the studio with former bandmate Nicke Andersson of the Hellacopters. With Andersson at the helm as producer, Sweden's bad boys of punk `n roll have returned with their most accomplished collection of songs to date."
AEREOGRAMME- "Seclusion" CD (Sonic Unyon)
"Hailing from Glasgow, Scotland, Aereogramme are true purveyors of challenging music. Constantly creating new soundscapes and tackling shades of light and dark like no other, Aereogramme are truly inspirational. Along with six brand new tracks - Seclusion also sees the band realise their love for films with the addition of a feature film that is played twice on the CD with two separate musical scores. 'Seclusion's dramatic highs and lows make it the perfect soundtrack to an imaginary movie.' - Alternative Press (5/5)"
NINE SHOCKS TERROR- "Zen And The Art Of Beating Your Ass" CD (Havoc)
"Remastered with new artwork, this is the US press of the LP originally released in Japan in 1999. The best material from this Japanese influenced Cleveland powerhouse. Hardcore from the gut with unrelenting violence and fury."
MEDESKI MARTIN & WOOD- "Note Bleu: The Best of the Blue Note Years 1998-2005" 2xLP (Blue Note)
"The grooves dive deep into the funkiest recesses of the dance floor and the soundscapes soar to heights beyond the stratosphere. Since the early '90s, MMW has been bending brains and moving behinds, fusing jazz, funk, and electronica into a viral groove that you can't help but catch. Note Bleu collects the finest of their six Blue Note albums into one must-have MMW anthology. Their legendary shows have seen MMW share stages with everyone from Phish and Dave Matthews to The Roots and DJ Logic to The Flaming Lips and Beck. This eclectic musical smorgasbord represents their wide appeal: the chin-stroking downtown jazzbos, the jam band twirlers, the crate-digging progressive hip-hop fans, the electronica rave vets, and the more adventurous indie rock omnivores. MMW has sold close to a million copies of their albums and have played over a thousand shows all over the world!
