Not much fanfare this week other than here's the list. I've been knee deep in so much stuff that I'm lucky to have gotten it done at all, but after burning the midnight oil........here 'tis.
PEEPING TOM- "S/T" CD (Ipecac)
"Years in the making, Peeping Tom, noise rock renaissance man Mike Patton's most accessible work since his days in Faith No More, is finally a reality. The 11-track opus, featuring a lengthy and incongruous cast of guest performers. In keeping with the landmark 1960 psychological horror film that inspired its name, Peeping Tom had its genesis a modus operandi devoid of physical intimacy. Patton would write songs with a wish list of theoretical collaborators in mind, then hope for a reply in the form of a finished track. "It's an exotic way of working for someone accustomed to a band environment," Patton says. "It was charming, really. None of the usual Animal House stuff. Instead of swapping spit and underwear, we were swapping files." Lack of face-to-face interaction did not keep long-distance collaborators from turning in exceptional performances: Norah Jones' lascivious "Sucker," Kool Keith's "Getaway" and Massive Attack's "Kill The DJ" are intense and passionate as anything a live band environment could have produced. Peeping Tom also includes contributions from Amon Tobin, Bebel Gilberto, Dub Trio, Kid Koala and several of Patton's Bay Area running buddies, such as Dan "the Automator" Nakamura (who tag teams with Rahzel on "Mojo"), Jel, Odd Nosdam and Doseone of anticon records. The end result is an utterly unique multigenre/multi-artist departure from Patton's more recent noisy output-one that would ultimately have to be classified as a pop record· a Mike Patton pop record, but a pop record nonetheless. Tracklisting: 01. Five Seconds (feat. Odd Nosdam) 02. Mojo (feat. Rahzel + Dan the Automator) 03. Don't Even Trip (feat. Amon Tobin) 04. Getaway (feat. Kool Keith) 05.Your Neighborhood Spaceman (feat. Jel+Odd Nosdam) 06. Kill The DJ (feat. Massive Attack) 07. Caipirinha (feat. Bebel Gilberto) 08. Celebrity Death Match (feat. Kid Koala) 09. How U Feelin? (feat. Doseone) 10. Sucker (feat. Norah Jones) 11.We're Not Alone -remix (feat. Dub Trio)"
MISSION OF BURMA- "The Obliterati" CD+DVD (Matador)
"We're slightly in awe of Burma's new, third full-length studio album proper, The Obliterati. Recorded at Boston's Q Division Studios with firmly ensconsed fourth wheel Bob Weston, The Obliterati might be the most aggressive, raw and challenging recording in the band's storied career. With equally strong contributions from Roger Miller, Clint Conley and Peter Prescott, The Obliterati, while having the odd melodic moment or two dozen, is as relentless and engulfing an album as we've heard since...well, since Burma's 'Vs.' some 24 years ago. Whether or not this album is as topical, absurdist or just plain hit-packed as that one, you'll have to figure out for yourself. For the moment, our senses are just shattered. We're pretty confident this is the uneasy listening album of the year. Next year, too."
Aberdeen- "Homesick And Happy To Be Here" CD (Better Looking)
"Full-length debut from former Sarah Records mainstays, Aberdeen. Featuring Beth Arzy (from Trembling Blue Stars). Produced and recorded with Ex-Mighty Lemon Drop David Newton and David Klotz of Fonda (Hidden Agenda / Parasol). Sounds like The Smith with a girl, The Sunday's with songs, and Belle and Sebastian with a fuzz box."
Acid Mothers Temple- "New Geocentric World Of......" CD ( Squealer )
Toting their most recent edition in an already prolific and steadily ongoing supersonic odyssey, New Geocentric World of Acid Mothers Temple is Acid Mothers Temple's first proper US domestic CD release. Formed in 1996 Kawabata Makoto (Mainliner, Toho Sara) as a communal collective of kindred spirits, the whole modus operandi of Acid Mothers Temple's elaborate vision is to merge the disparate worlds of heavy psyche rock, a la Blue Cheer, Gong, and Hawkwind, with the electronic compositional aesthetic of Stockhausen or Terry Riley minimalism.
Barry Adamson- "Stranger On The Sofa" CD ( CCI)
Stranger On The Sofa is the first post-Mute Records release from Barry Adamson and the first on his new Central Control International label. After stints in the majors, the minors and the last of the independents, Adamson delivers a D.I.Y. masterpiece that picks up where 2002's King Of Nothing Hill left off. Darkly cinematic, with its tales of future past, memories lost and dying love, Stranger On The Sofa is a film-jazz masterpiece that doesn't shy away from sentimentality but leaves enough slack for blistering prog-rock work-outs.
The Album Leaf- "An Orchestrated Rise to FAll" CD (Music Fellowship)
Nice to see this excellent debut from Jimmy Lavalle's "The Album Leaf" project available once again following the release of the massively acclaimed "In A Safe Place" a while back. "An Orchestrated Rise To Fall" is a superb debut - familiar ingredients delivering home listening music of the most absorbing kind : found sounds, piano cascades, keyboards, guitars, dusty drums, Rhodes keys - intimate soft modified folk songs and electronic soundscapes fused with loving attention to detail and an ear for those subtle things that make albums of this kind so memorable. If you liked "In A Safe Place" - this is an absolute must. Recommended.
The Album Leaf- "Seal Beach EP + Bonus Tracks" CD (Better Looking)
"Originally released in Spain in 2003, The Album Leaf's Seal Beach EP features five exclusive songs plus five bonus live tracks from The Album Leaf's tour with Sigur Ros. The Album Leaf Seal Beach EP on Better Looking Records is a 10-song digipack release with original artwork by painter/designer Rich Sanderson."

Brian Jonestown Massacre- "Strung Out In Heaven" LP (TVT)
One of their best albums, in for the 1st time on LP.
Buzzcocks- "Flat Pack Philosophy" LP (Damaged Goods)
"Flat Pack Philosophy is by miles the best Buzzcocks album since 1979's Different Kind Of Tension. 30 years later, still going strong, still doing it arguably better than anyone else, the godfathers of punk-pop are back with a new album, 'Flat Pack Philosophy which will be preceded by a new single, "Wish I Never Loved You". Flat Pack Philosophy is the Buzzcocks eighth studio album. In true punk rock fashion, and with superlative production by bassist Tony Barber, the album packs 14 songs into 36 minutes. Taking an urban guerilla stance against the evils of the modern world, from Tesco self-service tills to the cult of Ikea, this album proves that when you put the right creative personalities together, the magic manifests through pop melodies." Yellow vinyl.
Captain Beefheart And The Magic Band- "The Captain's Last Live Concert Plus" 2xCD (Ozit)
"A 2 CD set with Ten page full colour foldout cd booklet and full colour Beefheart Van Vliet disc on body prints. Thanks for being there! Consider yourself lucky- especially if you were on hand for the very last set on our last night there. Don perhaps feeling a bit mischievous threw in a couple of songs on the set list that we had rehearsed for the tour.......but never played anywhere else (excepting a sound check in France) Frankly, we should have all stepped directly into the recording studio the very next day. After having played as much as we had on that tour, we would have easily kicked the Ice Cream For Crow's ass, at least in terms of musical chemistry. Recorded in Jan 1981. Tracklist Disc 1: 1 Hair Pie Bake III ( Bass Solo), 2 Hair Pie Bake III (Full Band Version}, 3 Nowadays A Woman's Gotta Hit A Man, 4 I Wanna Find A Woman That'll Hold My Big Toe, 5 Hot Head, 6 Ashtray Heart, 7 Dirty Blue Gene, 8 The Smithsonian Institute Blues (or The Biog Dig), 9 Best Batch Yet, 10 Band Intro, 11 Safe As Milk, 12 One Red Rose That I Mean, 13 Sue Egypt. Danielson- "Ships" CD (Secretly Canadian)
What's in a name? After eldest Smith sibling finished his senior art school project and released it in 1995 under the moniker, "Danielson," he brought his four younger siblings and a few friends from childhood into the mix for the critically-acclaimed, "Tell Another Joke At the Ol' Choppin' Block," calling the group, "Danielson Famile." This was followed by the back-to-back concept albums, "Alpha" and "Omega," in 1998 and 1999 under the name, "Tri-Danielson." It was a long and confusing study in the three sides of music-making: Famile, Brother, and Ship. The follow-up release was Danielson Famile's "Fetch the Compass Kids," celebrating family. Then came Br. Danielson's "Brother Is To Son," celebrating personal identity and community. Now, "Ships" is the resolution. Opening arms wider than ever, Daniel made a long list of artists who have worked with Danielson over the years and other folks who planned to work together at some point. This list led to working with family, making new friends, and keeping the old. All joined together - both the well-known (Deerhoof, Sufjan Stevens, Why?) and not as well-known artists (Sereena Maneesh, Leopulde, Half-handed Cloud) - each bringing his or her own skills and ideas to Daniel's songs and voice, resulting in this crowning achievement.
Dinosaur Jr- "Green Mind" LP 180gram (Rhino)
"Dinosaur Jr's monumental noise was a crucible of raging riffs and emotive melody, an unlikely fusion of speaker-blowing feedback and catchy hooks. Post-punk and pre-grunge, they were an intense force to be reckoned with, and when the band signed to Sire in '91, J Mascis's shreddingly unique alt-rock sound was cranked up for vast new audiences of eardrums. These albums spotlight one of the most distinctive and influential artists of the '90s in prime form. Each release presents the original album on 180-gram vinyl. Green Mind is their Sire debut, originally released in '91, following their seminal SST classics. Includes "The Wagon", an all-time great Dinosaur Jr song featuring massive distortion, infectious melody, and an extended Mascis guitar solo. Also includes "Puke + Cry", "Thumb", and "Water"."
Dinosaur Jr- "Where You Been" LP 180gram (Rhino)
"Dinosaur Jr's monumental noise was a crucible of raging riffs and emotive melody, an unlikely fusion of speaker-blowing feedback and catchy hooks. These albums spotlight one of the most distinctive and influential artists of the '90s in prime form. Each release presents the original album on 180-gram vinyl. Where You Been includes the yearning, burning classic "Out There", the rock radio hit "Start Choppin", plus the stand-outs "Get Me", "Hide", and "Not The Same"."
Roky Erickson And The Aliens- "The Evil One" LPx2 (Sympathy)
"There are many Roky Erickson albums but The Evil One, originally released by CBS Records in Europe in 1980, was the first of them and, many would say, the best. This re-issue also includes the five additional songs contained on the 1981 US release of The Evil One on San Francisco's 415 Records and thus contains all of the Roky Erickson material from these great recording sessions produced by Stu Cook for Orb Productions from 1978 to 1980. For the first time included on this reissue are additional bonus tracks including earlier versions of "Mine Mine Mind," "Two Headed Dog" and "Click Your Fingers Applauding The Play" previously released by France's Sponge Records in 1976. This record represents one of Sympathy's proudest and most important achievements and The Evil One definitely has a deserved and secure place among rock's brightest (and genuinely scary) moments. Gatefold, limited edition."
Filthy Thieving Bastards- "My Pappy Was A Pistol" CD ( BYO )
Filthy Thieving Bastards have returned after a four year hiatus from recording, with a new full length album “My Pappy Was A Pistol”. Featuring members of the Swingin’ Utters and Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, the Bastards’ new record runs the gamut stylistically between old-school punk rock, traditional country, folk & irish music, and 60’s psychedelic pop. Following a run of successful Northern and Southern California shows in the spring of ‘05 featuring Spider Stacy from The Pogues, the Bastards invited Stacy into the recording studio to record vocals and Tin Whistle for the album. Their sound is almost un-categorizable; but their blend of traditional country/folk and pop music, infused with the punk rock sensibility they’ve honed for 15+ years in the Swingin’ Utters, seems to appeal to people of all ages. There is something in FTB’s music for everyone, from punk rockers to country and folksters.
Glands Of External Secretion With Nels Cline/My Cat Is An Alien- "From The Earth To The Spheres VOL 6" CD (Very Friendly)
"Italian brothers Maurizio and Roberto Opalio, aka My Cat Is An Alien, split the sixth volume of their From The Earth To The Spheres series with San Francisco's cult band Glands Of External Secretion. On this occasion the duo, formed in 1992 by Bananafish magazine publisher/ performance artist Seymour Glass and indie-rock princess Barbara Manning, features the special collaboration of well-known guitarist improviser Nels Cline (now member of Wilco). The trio's track "Icebox" is a slow ascent from the realm of isolationism, through frozen tape manipulation and icy drones, terrific voices and subtle infernal groans which seem to come from the obscure side of the Moon, where Cline's estranged looped guitar is ready to launch the ultimate attack to Earth. On the other side of the flip, MCIAA's "After the Meteor Shower" represents a further experiment in the use of Roberto's unearthly fragmented vocals, as a way to create heavy-emotional textures of interstellar tunes. A cosmic ! rain of howling guitars & electronics introduces the fall into a silent, ritualistic procession marked by the distant echo of a drum, alongside a whispered chant over real sounds emerging from the concrete surface of the Planet."
Goldrush- "Ozona" CD (Better Looking)
"The U.S. debut of Oxford, England's Goldrush. 11 tracks produced by Rob Campanella (Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Tyde) and Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev). "With its Britpop melodicism and lyrical guilelessness, 'Ozona' might be some of the strongest recent Americana not made in America - psych-pop on a countrified tableau of jangle, fuzz and twang." - LA TIMES"

Hot Chip- "Coming On Strong" CD (DFA)
Bedroom laptop thug-pop. Electro-ironic soul music. Tongue-in-ass hip-hop. DF-Ay-Ay-Ay! There are all sorts of wonky titles we could create to describe Hot Chip, Joe Goddard and Alexis Taylor's perplexing electronic British outfit. Hell, Goddard even looks like a mellow James Murphy. Their full-length debut, Coming on Strong, was released in Europe more than a year ago and warmly if not exasperatingly received. This slightly reconfigured U.S. issue comes off at first like slight pop-- novelty even. But extended listens reveal a goofy sincerity and romantic insouciance.
Kool Keith- "Diesel Truckers" LPx2 (Funky Ass)
Kool Keith returns with the assistance of Kutmasta Kurt for his zillionth album of 2004.
Ladyhawk- "Ladyhawk" CD (Storyboard)
"Ladyhawk awakens in a trash-filled, "morning after" apartment in East Vancouver, British Columbia. Ladyhawk arise, pick up their instruments and head out into the heathen city, singing songs about life and love. They are rockers and dreamers -- still trapped in their apple country teenage minds, looking for girls and kicks, and mining their teenage quarries from the inside-out. Their self-titled debut is a stomping and sweaty ride through the Vancouver streets that they all know well, as viewed from the seats of a bruised and doorless Astro Van. Ladyhawk's core is bracing rock. Neil Young's Tonight's The Night is the hailstorm on the hood of The Replacements Let It Be, while distorted guitars invoke the thread and swerve of Silkworm and Dinosaur Jr. Helped along the way by Amber Webber (vocals) and Josh Wells (percussion, organ) of Black Mountain, it will be hard to find a more hauntingly beautiful set of rock music than this debut."
Mammatus- "Mammatus" LP (Invada)
UK vinyl of the Holy Mountain CD. "The album consists of four long tracks, the longest, "Dragon of the Deep Part 2" clocks in at a staggering 25 minutes long. With an excess of fuzz and wah noise they manage to combine all the best bits of 70's UK psych rock with the sonic assault of early Monster Magnet and they enter the realm of heavy drone sludge rock. The sleeve of this debut album was crafted by the 'artist of the moment', Arik Roper who has made his fame for his work with likes of High on Fire, Sleep, SunnO))), Comets on Fire and Arthur Magazine. Since forming at the begining of 2005 Mammatus have been playing regularly in their native town of Santa Cruz and in venues in San Fransisco which has gathered them lots of praise and interest. In the summer they embarked on a full US tour, playing shows with the likes of Sub Pop's Kinski, Japan's Up Tight and their close friends Residual Echoes."
Marked Men- "Fix My Brain" CD (Swami)
“Fix My Brain” is the Marked Men’s third CD/LP and first for us here at Swami. “Fix My Brain” was engineered by Marked Man & drummer Mike in his shed and produced by the band. When I listen to it I hear massive hooks, dangerous curves, tight transitions, spring loaded booby traps and hammock rocking gusts of air. I see the vague outline of some of my favorite bands of all time (The Beat, Buzzcocks, The Jam, Undertones, Dickies, Who and Kinks) yet re-traced and fed into a jet engine. It’s pop music that doesn’t lose it’s flavor on the bedpost over night but instead grows fur and teeth upon repeated listening. The frailty of the pop form is electrocuted. It’s erratic heartbeat amplified and caffeinated. Speakers will surely die. (Swami)
Thurston Moore- "Psychic Hearts" 2LP (Goofin')

Mr Nogatco aka Kool Keith- "Nogatco Rd." CD (Insomniac)
A new classic is born from Hip Hop's most outrageous and unpredictable artist, Kool Keith (Black Elvis, Dr. Octagon, Dr. Dooom). Nogatco Rd. is Keith's most inventive and highly anticipated album in years. Complete with UFO conspiracies, alien autopsies, coded space raps, and an amazing array of some of the most original tracks in years. Nogatco Rd. features strong and intricate Hip Hop production that is dusted with a dabble of hard rock, electronic and celestial soundscapes. The Nogatco Rd. album is also an Enhanced CD that is loaded with features including a 50's style Sci-Fi mini-movie starring Kool Keith (viewable on a computer CD-ROM drive). Other features also include a digital comic book, digital photo album and other treats. Produced by Iz-Real (of the acclaimed MF Doom/Viktor Vaughn release "Venomous Villain"), Nogatco Rd. also features guest appearances from progressive Hip Hop stars Sage Francis aka Xual Zan and the king of hard hitting avant-garde Hip Hop, Sole (of Anticon). Talented beatmakers DiViNCi, Jahson, Mr. Hill, EDK, Carl Kavorkian, Broken Klutch and D. Watcher also contribute. Welcome to the world of Hip Hop music's most enigmatic figure; a sinister, scientific Hip Hop genius known as Mr. Nogatco aka Kool Keith; reborn in rare form.
Nachtmystium- " Instinct: Decay" CD ( Battle Kommand/Southern Lord)
"Nachtmystium have been dwelling within the U.S. black metal underground for a period of time in which this enigma have clearly spearheaded themselves as one of North America's most prominent acts within the scene. Where in the beginning, we witnessed Nachtmystium portray a bleak sound-picture by incorporating the many facets that became synonymous with the brand of traditional, raw and primitive black metal that was surfacing from these shores, it was quite evident that the promise that such an act showed in its early stages, was just a mere warning of what was inevitably to come. Surely though, Nachtmystium have always shown their distinct histrionics on their interpretation on how they liked to portray their black metal art. Through morose and mournful hymns that displayed a scenario where sadness and hatred were the two dominating emotions that bled from band leader Azentrius' instrument, this vision that he has conjured up many years ago, has reached it's phoenix with the surfacing of the latest Nachtmystium observation, Instinct:Decay. What Nachtmystium have unearthed with their latest masterpiece is a further plunge into the band's unearthly musical histrionics where a more aggressive, experimental, and psychedelic portrait is painted through many layers of sound that flow through infectious dark and morbid melodies of despair that sear throughout the album's discourse. As well, Instinct:Decay sees Nachtmystium incorporating other musical influences within their sound picture and making them more profound. With "outside" influences such as Pink Floyd (a prominent influential artist consistent within Nachtmystium's repertoire), Earth, and even Sunn 0))) (an act in which Nachtmystium have shared the stage with), such influences that have been incorporated within the Nachtmystium sound have helped take this band's sound to new levels and new perspectives respectively. Overall, Instinct:Decay will future solidify Nachtmystium's position within the U.S. black metal elite alongside other black metal artists as Xasthur, Leviathan, Krieg, and Thralldom, artists in which Nachtmystium share a comradeship with, all while re-defining, and re-shaping, the future of black metal."

Radio 4- " Enemies Like This" LP ( Astralwerks )
"New York's Radio 4 returns with their strongest album yet, Enemies Like This. The album was produced by Jagz Kooner (recorded in New York and mixed in London by Kooner himself) and the results are a new landmark for Radio 4! Enemies Like This refines the band's signature sound while taking it to the next level, which in this case means a return to the rawer, more emotonally-charged sound of their earlier material. The new album delivers politically charged, intelligent lyrics over funk riff guitars and deep throbbing dub grooves. Key tracks include "Enemies Like This", "This is Not a Test", "Too Much to Ask For" and "Packing Things Up"."

Submarine Races- "S/T" CD (In The Red)
Up periscope, sailor! There's some hot-rocking on the horizon. Submarine Races are a threesome of arty rocker-types from Chicago, Illinois. Started by guitarist/vocalist/explorer Ian Adams (Happy Supply, The Ponys), drummer/seaman Paul John Higgins, and bassist/best mate Steve Denekas (Entertainment, The Countdown), the 'Races borrow freely from the entire Easybeats catalogue, commandeer the Modern Lovers' understated efficiency, and all but sleep with the entirety of mid-to-late 1980's twee, British guitar-pop bands. Submarine Races' signature sound is both calculated to be derivative and absolutely authentic. Considering the current state of rock's apeish bravado and emotionally-impaired dildo-ery, these guys remind you why you put The Pastels on mix tapes in the first place. They also happen to know what a good haircut can do for a young band's confidence in "the game." With a handful of jangled melodies, some polite lyrics, and plenty of charm, the group has its coordinates set for your stereo. Let's just hope they don't "deep-six" you when your hatch is cracked.
Sunburned Hand Of The Man- "Complexion" CD (Very Friendly)
"Very Friendly are honored to offer you 2005's Complexion for the first time on CD (and their first UK release) originally released on a limited run of 1000 vinyl. "Another psychic gangbang from New England's finest fever dream peddlers. This record contains futuristic meditations on some proto-gypsy ritual from the distant past & hyper-realistic abstractions tailor made for the absurdity of human interaction as it has come to be recognized in the present day. Complexion, unlike other Sunburned records, promises invisible skin for the faces between your ears and trancendental pulse options for the curiously minded purveyors of a young millenium. Once again the have-nots trump the haves with even deeper proclaimations of emancipation and Complexion penetrates far below the surface, opening the pores, smoothing every wrinkle & gently guiding the crow's feet closer to oblivion. Complexion is beautifully wrapped in the visonary artwork of Mr. John Jagel whose work also includes the album cover to John Coltrane's Ole Coltrane and Ornette Coleman's Ornette LP.""

Tied & Tickled Trio- "A.R.C." CD (Morr)
"In 1994, Markus Acher (The Notwist, Lali Puna) and Christoph Brandner founded the Tied & Tickled Trio in Weilheim, Bavaria as a polyrhythmic duo playing drums only. On the occasion of an exhibition of sculptor Andreas Gerth (later becoming a busy musician on the Weilheim scene), he and Markus' brother Micha (The Notwist, Ms. John Soda) joined the Tied & Tickled Trio adding bass (Micha) and electronics (Andreas) to the two drum sets. Fast-forward to 2006 and the release of the DVD + CD release of A.R.C. which perfectly captures the essence of the band with footage that includes live performances, videos and some bonus audio tracks.

Tristeza- "A Colores" CD (Better Looking)
"This is Tristeza's third full-length since the release of their critically acclaimed debut Spine & Sensory in 1999. It has layers and textures akin to Boards Of Canada and Amon Tobin. Melodic and inventive, emotive and inspirational, the music sings so eloquently throughout, it is nothing less then revelatory. A colorful journey beyond instrumental post-rock, delving into the darker realms of modern psychedelia".

V/A- "Street Credentials" DVD (Insomniac)
Insomniac Magazine throws its hat into the DVD magazine genre with Street Credentials. Hosted by Insomniac founder IZ-REAL, Street Credentials patches together various interview segments with the likes of Kool Keith (as serious as I’ve ever seen him), Aesop Rock, Saul Williams, and Immortal Technique, among other independent entrepreneurs who have carved out their niche in the hip hop landscape. From Aesop Rock’s pledge of loyalty to Def Jux to Saul Williams experience on Rick Rubin’s label there are plenty of tidbits that underline the DVD’s purpose of business within the culture.
Probably the best part of the whole DVD was the interview with Immortal Technique who comes off as a man on a mission. When IZ-REAL asks him his goal in the game he deadpans, ‘I’m not here to fuck around,’ and the way he says it just makes you believe this cat is serious business. The DVD also includes a bonus trailer for Kool Keith’s new album Mr Nogatco, a Poison Pen freestyle, and a Juvy Center visit by IZ-REAL. I’d have liked to see more performances though. If you’re going to do a DVD mag you might as well maximize it with more than just interviews and a few clips of the city. Otherwise, this was a cool debut as it stuck to the concept and did a good job tying all of the various artists together to deliver its message.
Venetian Snares- "Cavalcade of Glee & Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms" CD (Planet Mu)
Having grown vastly in popularity since 2005's astounding Rossz Csillag Allat Szeletett (which has sold over fifteen thousand copies worldwide), Venetian Snares (aka Aaron Funk) has since headlined sold out shows everywhere. Cavalcade Of Glee And Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms is the true follow up to last year's Hungarian masterpiece. Consisting of ten tracks written over the last eighteen months, it shows Funk's versatility with form and mastery of his tools. Melody is at the fore recalling the 2004 release Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding, but the rhythms are still jackhammer heavy and wildly fluctuating. The album also features fantastic artwork by Arnold Steiner of AS1projects.
Otomo Yoshihide/Bill Laswell/Yoshida Tatsuya- "Episome" CD (Tzadik)
"Otomo Yoshihide is one of the most versatile and creative musicians in Japan today. Known for his eclectic arrangements, noise drones and turntable magic, he is never so alive and filled with fire as when he plays his original instrument: the electric guitar. Here he is joined by Bill Laswell and the master drummer from the Ruins, Yoshida Tatsuya and there is no stopping him. Sparks abound in this burning studio recording by one of the world's great improvised rock units."
COUNTRY TEASERS- "The Empire Strikes Back" LP (In The Red)
Now available on vinyl, CD in stock too. Need I mention how great this is/they are again? Tuesday's show in Seattle was a joy to behold as well. ""In the industry, I am the only complete man..." sang Country Teaser's B.R. Wallers, quoting Naked Lunch, back in 1995. If modesty didn't forbid, he might've been speaking of his own band. Is there another current group operating at such a high level musically or lyrically? Evolving out of a prolific home recording project in the late '80s influenced by The Cure and Butthole Surfers, The 'Teasers debuted as a beguiling mixture of deconstructed country and dissonant post-punk. "Boycott the Studio" was their manifesto: "You will not find music where it is shown, only where it is hidden..." The Empire Strikes Back, the group's eighth full-length, was recorded in Oregon - 90,000 kilometers from the band's home in London - when In the Red made good on a promise to find the band a live-in studio with an amenable engineer (Rich Wells of Portland's Supreme Reality Studios). Far from a sanitized "studio recording," the album is as damaged and unpredictable as any Teasers album (only with better microphones). The band's humor remains as strangely contradictory as ever, with Wallers juggling a cast of personae as far-flung as P.G. Wodehouse, Ice Cube, Winston Churchill, and Bill Hicks. Is The Empire Strikes Back a concept album about race, England, and Star Wars, or did the band just find something unwholesomely amusing about the juxtaposition of fascism and Industrial Light and Magic? BLACK TIME- "Midnight World" LP (In The Red)
Now available on vinyl, CD in stock too. "The point is talent over ability, ideas over proficiency, energy over competence - action, time, and vision. Add some musical instruments to this confusion and the resulting mess is Black Time - shambolic but passionate, hollerin' and wailin' at the dying of the red light. If you pay attention to zines, blogs and websites dedicated to sub-underground rock, then no doubt you are aware that Black Time have been getting favorably compared to Crime, Pussy Galore, The Electric Eels, The Cramps and The Fall. A string of hopelessly limited edition vinyl 7-inches and 12-inches have stoked the fire. The hype is justified in this case, as Midnight World, the band's second full-length, is the perfect marriage of chug-a-lug, primeval drumming, opaque layers of guitars, new wave cinema references, '60s and '70s punk, lo-fi static and overwrought vocals from frontman Lemmy Caution. The best UK export since The Country Teasers, Black Time will be touring the US Summer 2006, and they are not to be missed."
Artery- "Into The Garden: An Artery Collection" CD (Cherry Red)
Artery are one of the great lost bands of the post-punk era. They were widely acknowledged to be Sheffield's answer to Joy Division. Regularly championed by the likes of Jarvis Cocker of Pulp as the steel city's finest export, until now Artery have been denied the career appraisal they so richly deserve. This collection is headed by the much admired, hugely atmospheric "Into The Garde", voted fourth best record of 1981 by listeners to John Peel's show. It also draws on highlights from their cult 1983 LP One Afternoon In A Hot Air Balloon and the mini-album Oceans. The recordings feature later Mission guitarist Simon Hinkler as well as the unique presence of singer Mark Gouldthorpe, one of the most incisive lyricists and volatile frontmen of the era. The package is completed with exclusive remixes and never before officially released tracks, as well as full sleeve notes and track annotation.
Robin Guthrie- "Continental" CD (Darla)
Robin Guthrie will be known to most people as co-founder/guitarist & the brains of the Cocteau Twins . Besides his work as a producer and engineer, he also delivers a solo work now and then. His latest effort is called Continental, an instrumental album with his typical shimmering guitars and ethereal moods. It is available through Darla Records.
Morbid Angel- "Alters Of Madness" CD+DVD (Earache)
Reissued & remastered with bonus material and a limited DVD.
The Meteors- "Undead Unfriendly & Unstoppable" CD (Anagram)
Restock of this album from 1999. UK psychobilly.
Bruce Springsteen- "We Shall Overcome" LP (Columbia)
The vinyl version of the Boss' tribute to Pete Seeger.
Scott Walker- "Drift" LP (4AD)
Every 11 years since 1984 Scott Walker, the James Joyce of Pop, has released an album that digs deeper into his unique, dark, musical world. A pop star back in the 60's with The Walker Brothers, Scott Walker began his journey into musical terra incognita with a series of solo albums that featured an improbable blend of crooning, surrealism, and experimentation. Walker's brand new album, "The Drift," is powerful, mysterious, astonishing, and compelling. While it seems to continue from where his previous album left off, it's otherwise utterly unlike anything else. Like some sort of provocative novel or densely rich audioplay, "The Drift" touches on essential cultural, political, human issues in a way that leaves the listener vulnerable to new ways of hearing and thinking. This would be the fancy LP version.
Dean Martin- "Young Dino" 4xCD Box Set (Proper)
Budget priced 4 CD box set The tradition of the Italian/American balladeer has proven a potent and enduring one in American pop music culture. Vocalists like Perry Como, Vic Damone, Jerry Vale, Frank Sinatra, Al Martino, Buddy Greco, Tony Bennett and Frankie Valli have all maintained this strong tradition throughout the years. Yet none of these stars has been able to do what Dean Martin did, to prevail simultaneously as a star of stage, movies, television and records. "Young Dino" traces the career of Dean Martin from his days as a casino croupier in Ohio to the great multi media entertainer he became. Features "How D'Ya Like Your Eggs In The Morning," "That's Amore," "Mambo Italiano" and others. 111 tracks with a 56 page illustrated booklet.
The Legendary Pink Dots- "Your Children Placate You From Early Graves" CD (Roir)
Their brand new cd that see's them celebrating their 25th year as a band. Another yeoman like performance which encompasses dark architechturally sound compositions. Elements of Classical, Rock, Ambient & even smatterings of Jazz played out with keyboards, horns, strings and electronics as only the Dots can do. Always amazing.
The Business- "Complete Singles" CD (Captain Oi)
Restock.
The Business- "Suburban Rebels: Live @ Rio's" DVD (MVD)
The Business got their start in 1979 as part of the UKs second wave of punk. The band was considered a leader of the "oi" movement, an edgy breed of punk rock that explored themes of street culture and working class rebellion. While adopting this aggressive style, The Business also explored the anthem song format, as seen in tunes like their debut-single "Harry May." Throughout the 80s and 90s, the band released several albums and changed their lineup many times along the way. LIVE AT RIO'S features a live performance from The Business's 1998 UK tour.
Slaid Cleaves- "Unsung" CD (Rounder)
The brand new studio recording from this highly regarded Austin singer songwriter. Recomended if you like guy's like Robert Earle Keen & Joe Ely etc.
AFI- "Decemberunderground" CD (Universal)
Brand new cd.
Art Brut- "Bang Bang Rock & Roll" CD (Fierce Panda)
New English buzz band that apparently have similarities to the Buzzcocks & the Television Personalities, and that's ok by me.
The Reigning Sound- "Live At Goner Records" LP (Goner)
Reigning Sound Live at Goner Records features different tracks and better sound (!) than the Telstar Records Live At Maxwell's lp/cd... Including quite a few Tennessee-based tracks- covers of Sam The Sham, Dan Penn's Swingin' Yo-Yos, and the great Carl Perkins, along with great Reigning Sound originals! Formerly only as a ltd. edition cd.
Hank Williams III- "Straight To Hell" CDx2 (Curb)
Hank III’s new album, Straight to Hell , breaks all the rules of country music while somehow managing to honor its traditions at the same time. This two-CD celebration of drinking too much, staying up too late and getting into all kinds of nefarious mischief will no doubt bring an exultant yee-haw from those intrepid souls who have followed the exploits of this third-generation hell-raiser. The surprise is that williams concocted his two-CD opus on a Korg D-1600 digital recorder — a $400 piece of hardware that liberated the artist from temporal and budget constraints (he was liberated from the constraints of decorum long ago). hank discovered the 1600 when he was on the road playing bass with Superjoint Ritual, the notorious side project of Pantera’s Phil Anselmo. “Their monitor man had one and I checked it out,” he recalls. “I was like, wow, man, this thing is actually musician-friendly. It’s not like you’ve gotta read a 50-page instruction booklet to use it. Within seconds you can be pluggin’ and playin’. I got like five of ’em now, man — I take ’em with me everywhere I go. I was just glad to finally find a machine I could halfway work.” Of the new album’s two discs, williams says that “One’s done right, the other’s done wrong.” The first record, cut in a high-ceilinged wooden room at a friend’s house in East Nashville, “is a bunch of songs two to six minutes long, with solos by super pickers, the ones I can’t afford to take on the road.” One of the most intriguing aspects of the dozen songs this CD contains is hank III’s use of traditional country music elements in the service of his own twisted world view. “My Drinkin Problem,” for example, hangs on a narrative turnaround that’s downright classic. In moments like this one, it’s apparent that the acorn didn’t fall far from the tree. Then there’s the second disc . . . “On the hidden CD, it’s basically just one track with a lotta ambient noises,” III explains. “Most of that stuff is me with a tape recorder, goin’ back to seven, eight years ago. When I say it’s done wrong, I mean it’s just me and my guitar, and a little story kinda unfolds. Like if somebody’s comin’ down off acid or something, they might get a kick out of it. I drove a couple of guys crazy puttin’ all that stuff on there, but it was a good time. It’s also the first time I’ve ever released a hank williams song on one of my records.”
Deep Purple- "Fireball: 25th anniversary edition" CD (Warner)
Remastered with bonus material.
Deep Purple- "Come Taste The Band" CD (Warner)
This is the album where Tommy Bolin replaced Ritchie Blackmore who went to play with Ronnie James Dio in Elf. David Coverdale sings in this lineup from 1975.
Captain Beefheart- "Bluejeans & Moonbeams" CD (WEA)
Reissue from 1974.
Captain Beefheart- "Shiny Beast" CD (WEA)
>From 1978 and one of his best.
Captain Beefheart- "Doc At The Radar Station" CD (WEA)
Generally acclaimed as the strongest album of his comeback, and by some as his best since Trout Mask Replica, Doc at the Radar Station had a tough, lean sound owing partly to the virtuosic new version of the Magic Band (featuring future Pixies sideman Eric Drew Feldman, New York downtown-scene guitarist Gary Lucas, and a returning John "Drumbo" French, among others) and partly to the clear, stripped-down production, which augmented the Captain's basic dual-guitar interplay and jumpy rhythms with extra percussion instruments and touches of Shiny Beast's synths and trombones. (AMG)
Twilight Singers- "Powder Burns" CD (One Little Indian)
The brand new cd from former Afghan Wig frontman Greg Dulli who's been recording as the Twilight Singers for some time now. Apparently Greg's been battling the bottle for awhile and this album supposedly documents it all. I'm sure it'll be great.
Julie London- "Julie/Love On The Rocks" CD (EMI International)
2-on-1. The release of these two albums has been heavily influenced by requests for the many Julie London fans worldwide. Recorded in 1958, Julie is an album of relaxing jazz featuring some great standards such as 'Somebody Loves Me', 'Bye Bye Blackbird', 'You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me' and 'When The Red Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobobbin' Along'. Love On The Rocks is an album which contains a dozen songs expressing the emotions of a woman whose love has been spurned. Julie adds to the already expressive lyrics, the magic ingredient of her provocative style, the style that is Julie London's distinctive trademark. Outstanding tracks include 'Willow Weep For Me', 'A Cottage For Sale', 'The Man That Got Away' and 'Love On The Rocks'. EMI Gold. 2006.
Gang Of Four- "A Brief History Of" CD (Warner)
A 20 track compilation spanning the years 1979-1983. Characterized by blatantly political lyrics that were chanted, sung, and yelled over spare, funky drumbeats and Andy Gill's scratch-and-kill guitar, the Gang's particular brand of angular dance punk was as refreshing as ice water in the face, and as this collection shows, still holds up well almost 20 years later.
Gang Of Four- "Entertainment" CD (Warner)
Their 1st album from 1979. Come see what all the fuss was about. This band launched the careers of hundreds of others such as The Minutemen, Fugazi, The Dismemberment Plan, The Bloc Party etc.
Gang Of Four- "Solid Gold" CD (Warner)
The 2nd official release with songs like Paralysed, What We All Want & Cheeseburger.
The Cramps- "Songs The Lord Taught Us" CD (IRS)
One of the great groups of all time and this is where it all started back in 1980. This was their debut produced by the equally weird Alex Chilton. Sunglasses after dark baby!
The Deadly Snakes- "Porcella" CD (Paperbag)
The Snakes spread their wings (or scales in this case) by toning down the garage-isms and amping up the dark Nick Caveish balladeering. Still plenty of soul in the vocals and odd insturmentation keeps things interesting. A for effort.
Talk Talk- "Spirit Of Eden" CD (EMI)
Leaving behind the dramatic europop sounds of previous efforts, Talk Talk delivered one of the most talked about albums to this day. Long stretched out songs that were improvised in the darkness of their London recording space and showcased Mark Hollis' ability to fuse equal parts Jazz, Classical, and snails paced dark Rock. One of the most thought provoking records out there.
Frank Zappa & Captain Beefheart- "Bongo Fury" CD (Ryko)
A killer live album from 1975 which includes Cucamonga & my favourite "Muffin Man".
Frank Zappa- "Zoot Allures" CD (Ryko)
The follow up the the aforementioned "Bongo Fury", this 1976 studio album saw Frank in the mood for slower tunes which were searing with intensity. Deliberate crooning vocals and mind blowing guitar solos (Black Napkins) mixed with hilarious lyrics (The Torture Never Stops, Disco Boy) makes this one of his best. A great place to start a Zappa collection.
Rory Gallagher- "Live In Europe" CD (MCA)
Rory's 1st live album from the mid 70's contains some vintage string stranglin' and a rave up version of Bullfrog Blues. Some of the best white boy blues rock hands down.
Trivium- "Ascendancy" CD (Roadrunner)
Trivium has only grown stronger since 2003's Ember to Inferno. That album's mix of classic thrash (early Metallica) with 21st century metalcore rage and progressive metal flourish still roils here. But Ascendancy's fire is more ferocious and its transitions more confident, which means the band is even more dedicated to its clever throwback sound. This is even more impressive when you consider that no one in Trivium is old enough to legally rent a car.
Born From Pain- "In Love With The End" CD (Metal Blade)
Hailing from the Netherlands's Born from Pain play the single most devastating and brutal form of tough hardcore known to man.
Not some upstart band. Born from Pain have been drilling the European hardcore scene since 1997. This is the first time their music will see a proper release inNorth America . Their grueling work ethic and devastating live performance have earned them fans across the world over, including sizeable fan bases in Europe, Japan and the United States following a successful west coast tour in the beginning of 2004 alongside Terror (Trustkill Records), Shattered Realm (Eulogy) and Figure Four (Solid State).
Raised Fist- "Sound Of The Republic" CD (Epitaph)
The third full-length offering from Swedish hardcore/punk monsters, Raised Fist, Sound Of The Republic is a bold jaunt into slightly new waters for the band – be it blood soaked waters!
Tracks like “Sunlight” and “Sound Of The Republic” feature guitars that swarm like blood thirsty, killer bees, drums that seem to move the ground beneath you and vocals that pound you non-stop from every direction; occasionally the vocals swing into a melodic chorus, but only briefly before they are smashed with a clap of thunder from frontman Alexander Rajkovic’s lungs! This is a truly brutal album for the brutal times we live in! (Epitaph Press Release)
Tapes 'N' Tapes- "Loon" CD (XL)
The brothers Tapes banded together in the winter of 2003, honing their musical stylings to a sound that Splendid calls “a hybrid that resembles Low fighting it out with My Bloody Valentine...eclectic, style-defying stuff.” Now TAPES ‘N TAPES bring you their long play record debut, THE LOON, which The Onion A.V. Club touts as “one of the best locally produced discs of the year.” Tapes ‘n Tapes are proud to present you with their sweet body-rockin’ collection of the freshest songs you’ll hear all year. Believe City Pages when they say, “This is love Pixies-style.” Come hear what the buzz is all about! (Taken from a Minneapolis Paper)
The Leather Uppers- "Bright Lights" CD (Goner)
Freakin AMAZING new lp from these flamboyant fellows from north of the border (Toronto). Leather Uppers began in the early 90s, released a bunch of 45s which were later compiled as a cd and then, 10 years later, as a vinyl lp, both now out of print yet legendary in underground rock circles, full of insidious guitar riffs and whacked-out party-rock lyrics. Imagine our delight when we heard that "THE LEATHER UPPERS ARE BACK!" and ready to release a new lp/cd .... on GONER! WHOAH! But we could never anticipate how great their new material was... until they debuted some at Gonerfest... and blew old and new fans' minds with their rock!
Seriously, we love these guys, their record just keeps getting better and funnier the more we listen to it, and you will be hearing lots from Classy Craig and Groovy Greg as they tour on this lp this year in Canada, the US, and in Europe. Did someone say "Keep on rocking? I think it was me!" (Goner Press Release)
Patterson Hood- "Killers & Stars" CD (New West)
Drive-By Trucker Patterson Hood's solo album, Killers and Stars might be exactly what you'd expect from the southern rocker gone acoustic. Delivering sparse acoustic folk-country, primarily relying on his guitar and his scratchy voice, Hood spins tales of growing up and living life with an old-time touch. Playing heartily to the traditional side of his roots passion, Hood creates a record that is honest and real, and sounds just as in place today as it would have back in the 30s or 40s.
The Drive By Truckers- "A Blessing & A Curse" CD (New West)
Restock of the new cd.
Beaulah- "Yoko: The Demo's" CD (Velocette)
How do you make a great album greater? Well, if you’re BEULAH, you go back and you present the actual DEMO versions of the songs that appear on their most recent CD, YOKO. Half the fun of this version is the insight into the development and progression of the arrangements, tempo changes, and instrument changes. Many tracks on DEMO make one forget about all the Beatles and Beach Boys comparisons, and might trick you into thinking you've unearthed a Big Star out-takes reel. This CD is only available directly from the band and at a handful of key indie music stores nationwide, so pick up your copy soon.
Iron & Wine- "The Passing Afternoon" CDEP (Sub Pop)
Not availble in large retail chain stores. This three song single from the southern gothic songwriter Sam Beam is the first official single from the critically acclaimed album Our Endless Numbered Days. The CD single contains one album track and two exclusive b-sides. Since their debut The Creek That Drank The Cradle to their marvelous sophomore album Our Endless Numbered Days, they’ve gotten mass appeal.
Alejandro Escovedo- "Por Vida: Live Fan Club" CD (Import)
ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO is one of the most critically acclaimed artists in contemporary music, widely admired for the stylistic innovation of his songs and his ability to translating his personal experiences and observations into universal truths. Alejandro fell ill from the effects of Hepatitis C in April 2003, and put out this live 16-track CD that has until recently only been available through the fan club. All songs recorded live at various locations.
Matthew Sweet- "Kim Ga Suki" CD (Import)
This recent solo album was recorded for a Japanese label and has only been available as a crazy high-priced import. Criminal Records is hooking you up U.S. dollars style. This is a full-length album with all new songs, New Yoker magazine likes it, saying, "Sweet's most recent solo album finds him writing more of the indelibly gorqeous, lovelorn songs that sent his star into ascendance a dozen years ago with his album "Girlfriend." This thing is cool, and in stock now.
Misfits- "Walk Among Us" CD (Slash)
Reissue of their 1st album.
Aggrolites- "S/T" CD (Hellcat)
The Aggrolites sound and musical influence can best be summed up as Late 60's Jamaican Reggae (Skinhead Reggae), recognizable to reggae fans into Upsetters, Hot Rod Allstars, Jackie Mittoo, Chrystalites. Studio One reggae bands.
Their music is heavily mixed with American soul and funk and influenced by the Meters, James Brown and Wilson Picket.
Prior to this debut release on Hellcat, the band independently released their debut CD and LP titled Dirty Reggae, on their northern California affiliated AXE record label. A punk/reggae classic. The title cut apeared on the Give Em The Boot IV CD and received support on L.A.s Indy 103.1fm radio station.
They have shared the stage live with Hepcat & Rancid among dozens of others from the punk, ska, funk and reggae scene, and have received overwhelming response to their powerful, funky, energetic show. The crowd call and response factor is always prominent at their concerts. They are infectious and have the dance floor rocking.
Bright Eyes- "Motion Sickness" CD (Saddle Creek)
Documenting the "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" tours from the first half of 2005, Motion Sickness is a compilation of live tracks, including a Feist cover and an Elliott Smith song. It comes with a 24 page booklet featuring an extensive tour diary written by Jason Boesel (Bright Eyes live band/Rilo Kiley).
V/A- "Give 'Em The Boot IV" CD (Hellcat)
Volume number five of this quintessential “street music” compilation features eighteen tracks from across the punk, ska, reggae and psychobilly scenes. In addition to tracks from powerhouse bands like Rancid and Dropkick Murphys, Give ‘Em The Boot Vol. 5 also brings bands on the rise, like Left Alone, The Aggrolites, The Mercy Killers and many more to the fore.
Eight of the eighteen tracks are previously unreleased and can only be heard on this version of the compilation. If you are a fan of this series, this volume is a must have. It looks to be the most complete in content and features some of the most exciting young bands around!
Acid King- "Busse Woods" CD (Mans Ruin)
Somebody found a box of some old Mans Ruin cd's and this was one of them. One of the all time great sludge doom albums. HEAVY is the operative word here and fans of Electric Wizard, Melvins, Sunn0 will surely already have this or smile greatly upon hearing it.
Sons Of Otis- "Temple Ball" CD (Mans Ruin)
Stoner rock from Toronto that always reminds me of a slower more psychedelic Monster Magnet. Monolithic.
Earthlings?- "Human Beans" CD (Mans Ruin)
Spaced-out ambient noise traversing previously unexplored dimensions of the multiverse, stoner/desert psychosis in morse code, synthetic anti-songs to channel and read auras by. This is what Queens of the Stone Age wants to be when they grow up--in fact, Josh Homme appears on this album, as do Dave Grohl and Mark Lanegan.
Roky Erickson & The Aliens- The Evil One" CDx2 (SFTRI)
A double cd collection that gives you an awesome anthology of Roky's solo work and a seperate cd of a hard to find live concert. Roky was the main guy behind 60's psyche legends the 13th Floor Elevators until his incarceration for possessing weed and subsequent stint in a Texas mental institution. If you're a true student of Rock'n'Roll you need this to complete the history lesson.
