Arrivals for tuesday/wednesday. More coming soon!

Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins- "Rabbit Fur Coat" LP (Saddle Creek)
Jenny's first solo album. I think this is the 1st time I've had it in on LP. Her new album is out this week as well.

The Pack AD- "Funeral Mix Tape" LP 180 gram (Mint)
Sophomore release from this talented Vancouver duo. These gals rip through well thought out blues rock nuggets with plenty of skill & brains. Contains free download. Regular CD is also in stock.

Tobacco- Fucked Up Friends" LP (Anticon)
Solo debut from the main constituent behind Black Moth Super Rainbow. Features vocals from Aesop Rock. Early version of Fucked Up Friends' audio was featured on Tobacco's limited DVD collaboration with visual artist Beta Carnage. Follows up Black Moth Super Rainbow's 2007 smash hit, Dandelion Gum. On his first solo album, Tobacco explores a darker, starker, and altogether more badass dimension of his complex vision. With his group, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Tobacco distinguishes himself as a master of jagged beats, glowing melodies, and pronounced tension. This time, he works alone, in rural Pennsylvania, away from conventions and interference. Limited edition LP of 1000 copies.

The Asteroid No. 4- "These Flowers of Ours" CD (Committee To Keep Music Evil)
Really beautiful shoegaze from this band that keeps getting better. On the Brian Jonestown Massacre label.

Bison- "Earthbound" CD (Forest)
Real nice stoner style stuff from these Vancouver lads. They stole the show on the Baroness tour from what I've been told.

Black Mountain- "Black Mountain" CD (Scratch)
Restock of their debut album.

Black Mountain- "In the Future" CD+LPx2 (Scratch)
Restock of their 2nd album on both formats.

Don Caballero- "Punkgasm" LPx2 (Relapse)
Punkgasm is the sixth studio album by Don Caballero, the Pittsburgh-based Math Rock band. The 2008 album Punkgasm explodes with all of the band's legendary trademarks: wildly inventive poly-rhythms; layers of looping guitar acrobatics; rich melodies & textures; & expansive compositions that evolve & unfold from start to finish. The album's more relaxed feel sees the band pushing their sound in a host of surprising new directions.

Forbidden Dimension- "A Cool Sound Outta Hell" LP+CD (Saved by Vinyl)
The Forbidden Dimension began originally as a one-man band in 1988, but over the course of 19 years, Jackson Phibes (Earth name: Tom Bagley) has worked with a host of other local Calgary musician pals. In 2006, FD began recording A Cool Sound Outta Hell, the first full-length project since 1997's Widow's Walk. The album comprises songs worked up secretly during the intervening years along with a clutch of brand new stompers honed in the live setting. It's a surefire combination of catchy garage rock, psychedelic mood modifiers and ornate protometallic ravers. The FD were delighted to find that Calgary's Saved By Vinyl label was expressing interest in doing the full 12-inch vinyl release, a first for the band which has continued priding itself on keeping it fun, loud and creepy-assed. Since starting out in the Calgary-based garage rock band Color Me Psycho in 1985, Phibes has been dishing out macabre-tinged, psychedelic punk rock for over two decades. CMP managed to stay together for 3 years of tyranny and stagnation, releasing a few tapes and one full-length piece of vinyl (the now collector's item Pretend I'm Your Father album). Immediately following the demise of his first ill-fated stab at the smalltime, Phibes set about initiating a headlong dive into the B-movie rock ghettos with the Forbidden Dimension. Three critically well-received, full-length CDs were recorded and released by the now defunct Cargo Records. These, along with a brace of singles on various small labels, found an ardent international cult audience. A fourth CD was released by an Ann Arbor, MI label, Reanimator Records, in 2000. This collection of home-made, one-man band recordings reached #3 on the !Earshot chart that summer. "no one could ever match Phibes's witty graveyard songwriting and funny approach to the macabre." Vue Weekly

Grady- "Y U So Shady" LP+CD (Alternative Tentacles)
Canadian guitar hero Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar) packed up, moved south to Austin, TX and teamed up with a hotter then hell rhythm section to create his newest and baddest band with a sound equal parts Gospel Revival and Satanic Ritual. Grady have turned heads down south, winning "Best New Band" at the 2007's annual Austin Music Awards.

Grails- "Doomsdayer's Holiday" CD (Temporary Residence)
“Following up last year’s Burning Off Impurities and their recent Take Refuge In Clean Living EP, Grails return with their darkest, heaviest record yet. Written and recorded over the last 18 months, Doomsdayer’s Holiday delivers on the promises made by their previous albums, taking equal pride in smoky psychedelics and mountain-ascending riffs. With Faust conspirator Steven Wray Lobdell and Earth/Sunn O))) producer Randall Dunn as engineers – not to mention drummer Emil Amos having recently become the new other half of Om – Grails’ avant-metal leanings are evident as always. But Doomsdayer’s Holiday finds their already-broad palette continually expanding with 70s European film noir and cosmic free jazz explorations to compliment the Middle Eastern psychedelic folk-metal the group is already known for. Inviting the legendary Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls to add vocals to the mix for the ominous “Predestination Blues” only adds to its unusual beauty. Doomsdayer‘s Holiday is the culmination of a wildly prolific three-year streak for Grails. This band that never stops pushing forward has finally made an album that pushes back. Devoted students of the past, they have transcended their genre to become an inspiring influence for future celestial explorers.”

Restock. Grind-core.

Die Hunns- "You Rot Me" LP (People Like You)
European pressing of this Duane Peters album from last year.

Bathory- "Hammerheart" CD (Black Mark)
Regularly cited as the archetypical Viking metal album, Bathory's Hammerheart remains an unqualified triumph for the pioneering Swedish act. Merging audacious lyrical ambitions with a sense of musical grandeur akin to the greatest epic works in metal history -- among which it is frequently numbered -- Hammerheart is a fully fleshed concept album, and a literate one at that. Chronicling with great detail and drama the Christian invasion of Scandinavia during medieval times, and his pagan ancestors' forceful conversion to the cross, Seth Quorthon became a standard-bearer for an entire generation of disenfranchised Norse-descended teens.

Lisa Gerrard- "The Silver Tree" CD (Rubber)
One listen to Lisa Gerrard's The Silver Tree (originally available only on iTunes and now as an Australia-only import) is enough to convince anybody -- who isn't already convinced -- that there's a very specific reason she has been courted by directors to compose soundtracks. There are 13 tracks here, full of wispy ambient soundscapes on top of which the former Dead Can Dance vocalist places her almost otherworldly gift of a voice. Sung nearly as prayers or meditative mantras, Gerrard employs monosyllabic glimpses of other languages -- and occasionally English -- to create her own tapestry of dreams.

The Black Crowes- "Warpaint" LP 180 gram (Import)
Restock on 180 gram LP. Look for the limited edition of Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes "Live At The Greek" Lpx3 coming soon.

High grade 180 gram vinyl in a heavyweight gatefold sleeve.

The Legendary Pink Dots- "Plutonium Blonde" CD (ROIR)
The Legendary Pink Dots have created their most commercially appealing album to date with Plutonium Blonde, the follow up to 2006’s Your Children Placate You From Premature Graves. Frontman Edward Ka-Spel and his crew capture the listener’s imagination with lush and haunting songs. “A World with No Mirrors” is as beautiful and emotionally charged as any Belle & Sebastian song, while “My First Zonee” comments upon our narcissistic love affair with modern technology. “An Arm & A Leg” reminds us of the fragile state of our mental and physical health. Plutonium Blonde is more than just an album; it’s an aural and visual treat, a collection of stories that could have very well been written by a modern day Brothers Grimm.
“Since 1980, LPD have created some of the most enigmatic and challenging compositions in modern music. The uniqueness of their work is due in large part to its omnivorous ability to consume and transform a variety of styles into a new, cohesive entity. The introverted folk of Nick Drake may be found here, as well as the graphic cyberpunk nightmares of Frank Tovey (Fad Gadget), not to mention the rhythmic permutations of Philip Glass. From Beefheart to Brahms, the sources of LPD's quicksilver soundscapes are myriad. What holds them all together is Ka-Spel's dense lyricism and grim obsessions.” – ROLLING STONE
“Since their first recordings dating back to 1982, the LPD have been making introspective and experimental music questioning the concepts of religion, science fiction, nature, politics, thought, emotion, and self. Utilizing glacial rhythms, concentrating on keyboard sounds that other musicians discard as unusable, and topping it all off with the eerily haunting voice of Edward Ka-Spel, the LPD have managed to worm themselves into a niche solely their own. Listening to their music is more a long, insane, hallucinogenic acid trip through a demented carnival funhouse than it is a "relaxing" musical experience, but all the same, there's something seductive and alluring about it all.” – PITCHFORK

Diana Krall- "Very Best Of" LPx2 (Verve/Europe)
Double LP in a gatefold sleeve. Good price @ $29.98 considering it's from overseas.

The Weakerthans- "Reunion Tour" CD (Epitaph)
Restock.

Velvet Underground- "White Light White Heat" CD (Polydor)
Restock.

Jim White- "Transnormal Skiperoo" CD (Luaka Bop)
In musical terms, Skiperoo is more of a continuation from its subdued predecessor than it is a return to the wide-ranging stylistic exploration of No Such Place (although the boisterous singalong "Crash Into the Sun" recalls that album's excellent loop-based rockers.) But White's distinctive, evocative blend of folk, country, gospel, blues, and pop never quite squares with the sum of its components, and as usual there's enough atmospheric sonic tomfoolery (the production this time around was mostly handled by Pernice Brothers Joe Pernice and Mike Deming) and unusual instrumental choices to keep it sounding agreeably, well, transnormal.

Ten Years After- "A Space In Time" CD (CBS)
From 1971. Woodstock heroes had their most popular album with this one. Contains the hit "I'd Love To Change The World".

Hacienda Brothers- "What's Wrong With Right" CD (Proper)
1st album featuring the now deceased Chris Gaffney & Dave Gonzalez (formerly of San Diego roadhouse rockers The Paladins). Rootsy Americana in it's finest form.

Downchild Blues Band- "Live @ The Palais" CD (Linus)
Recorded in Toronto in 2006.

Great Lake Swimmers- "Ongiara" CD+LP (Nettwerk/Weewerk)
Back in stock again on both formats.

Mother Mother- "Oh My Heart" CD (Last Gang)
MOTHER MOTHER is definitely not a band to sit idle. The Vancouver based quintet are back with their sophomore album, O MY HEART, out on Last Gang Records (Metric, DFA 1979, The New Pornographers). O MY HEART shows all of the signs of a promising future. They placed producer Howard Redekopp (The New Pornographers, Tegan and Sara, 54.40) at the helm, and set their course. The result, an artistic and original expression of modern pop music that beautifully combines novelty and nostalgia, profundity and play, to create a musical landscape that will leave the listener spell bound and captivated. Mother Mother's use of rich vocal harmony, deeply poetic lyricism, and dynamic instrumentation are masterfully employed in this new collection of songs that mark the evolution and maturity of a band that stands out in today's music scene – a band with staying power, and one that pushes the bounds of contemporary pop/rock sensibilities.

Supersuckers- "La Mano Cornuda" LP (Cargo)
Reissue on LP. Gatefold sleeve & heavyweight vinyl. From the UK.

Clutch- "Jam Room" LP (Megaforce)
First time in on LP for this 2004 fifteen track release.

David Bowie- "Live In Santa Monica '72" LPx2 180 gram (EMI)
Santa Monica '72 is a live album by David Bowie, recorded at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on 20 October 1972 during the Ziggy Stardust tour. Taken from an FM radio broadcast, it was available only as a bootleg for more than 20 years; according to author David Buckley, possessing a copy was the test of a "proper Bowie fan". The recording was issued officially by the Golden Years label in 1994, with Griffin Music handling the American release in 1995.

Bright Black Morning Light- "Motion To Rejoin" LP + free MP3 download (Matador)
Brightblack Morning Light do nothing but chill out yet farther on Motion to Rejoin. Recorded in the secluded New Mexico desert with many self-enforced limitations -- most notable of which is the restriction of studio power to direct solar radiation (aka daylight) -- Rachael Hughes and Naybob Shineywater have fashioned another record that cobbles together eight tracks from what seems like a maximum of two or three different grooves. The duo and their compatriots nonetheless continue to sound great, even if their music's true aim is nothing more than relaxation or meditation. Hughes' Rhodes piano and Shineywater's Silvertone guitar or Hohner clavinet amble through the album, calling up the ghosts of the American Southwest (and South), even as they veer yet closer to nearer descendants like Talk Talk and Spiritualized.

Sunn00))- "Black 1" CD (Southern Lord)
Restock on CD. Bleak ambient darkness with the occasional flourish of doom.

Jenny Lewis- "Acid Tongue" CD (Warner)

Boston Spaceships- "Brown Submarine" CD+LP (Guided By Voices Inc.)

Mars Volta- "Bedlam In Goliath" LPx2 (Universal)
Back in stock. Double LP on colored vinyl with a bonus disc shaped like a Ouija Board that has a bonus track on it. Crazy!

These Arms Are Snakes- "Tail Swallower & Dove" LP (Suicide Squeeze)
Artsy Seattle post-hardcore act These Arms Are Snakes mixes the urgency and aggressive vocal style of punk with the exploded song structures and technical complexity of the original wave of math rock bands. This fusion is a logical progression from the bandmembers' former projects: singer Steve Snere was formerly of the Minneapolis-to-Seattle emo transplants Kill Sadie, while bassist, singer, and keyboardist Brian Cook was formerly in long-running math rockers Botch.

Velvet Underground- "Velvet Underground" CD (Polydor)
Restock.

Queens Of The Stone Age- "Rated R" LP (Interscope/UK)
Imported copy of this LP in a gatefold sleeve with the X-Rated inside cover.

Johnathan Richman & The Modern Lovers- "Rock & Roll With The Modern Lovers" LP 180 gram (Earmark)
In stock for the 1st time on LP. Imported on the Earmark label from the UK.

Lou Reed- "Berlin" LP 180 gram (Sony Legacy)
Transformer and "Walk on the Wild Side" were both major hits in 1972, to the surprise of both Lou Reed and the music industry, and with Reed suddenly a hot commodity, he used his newly won clout to make the most ambitious album of his career, Berlin. Berlin was the musical equivalent of a drug-addled kid set loose in a candy store; the album's songs, which form a loose story line about a doomed romance between two chemically fueled bohemians, were fleshed out with a huge, boomy production (Bob Ezrin at his most grandiose) and arrangements overloaded with guitars, keyboards, horns, strings, and any other kitchen sink that was handy (the session band included Jack Bruce, Steve Winwood, Aynsley Dunbar, and Tony Levin). And while Reed had often been accused of focusing on the dark side of life, he and Ezrin approached Berlin as their opportunity to make The Most Depressing Album of All Time, and they hardly missed a trick. Soundtrack- "Black Snake Moan" LP (New West)
This soundtrack to the film written and directed by Craig Brewer is as steeped in the Southern blues as his Hustle and Flow was in hip-hop. The biggest surprise here is how well actor Samuel L. Jackson (who seems to have a thing for "Snake" films) holds his own as a blues singer against selections from Son House and R.L. Burnside. He sounds like a throwback to the classic Delta bluesmen on "Just Like a Bird Without a Feather," does a convincing take on the Blind Lemon Jefferson title track, and rocks the juke joint on "Alice Mae" and a down-and-dirty recasting of "Stack-O-Lee." Produced by the Bo-Keys' Scott Bomar (who also scored Brewer's previous movie), the 17-cut soundtrack features a kaleidoscopic array of blues, from the primal throb of the Black Keys' "When the Lights Go Out" and the funk of Bobby Rush's classic "Chicken Heads" to the spiritual lilt of Precious Bryant's "Morning Train" and the North Mississippi Allstars' expansive finale, "Mean Ol' Wind Died Down."

Nirvana- "Bleach" LP (Sub Pop)
Restock.

Nirvana- "Nevermind" LP (Geffen)
Restock.

Nirvana- "Unplugged on MTV" LP (Geffen)
Restock.

John Lee Hooker- "I'm In The Mood" LP (Bet Back)
Restock.

Che- "Sounds Of Liberation" LP (Low Desert Punk)
A stoner rock trio helmed by former Kyuss drummer Brant Bjork (handling vocals and guitars here), Che also features Unida bassist Dave Dinsmore and latter-day Kyuss drummer Alfredo Hernandez (Bjork's replacement no less). Their first offering, the groove-heavy, retro-stylish Songs of Liberation was released in 2000 by Man's Ruin with little fanfare, but to great critical acclaim.

Modest Mouse- "A Life Of Arctic Sounds" 7" (Suicide Squeeze)
A rare 7" from Modest Mouse. B-side is "Medication".

The Misfits- "The Misfits Boxset" CDx4 (Caroline)
Their complete discography (The Danzig years) on 4 jam packed CD's. Includes 28 page booklet and an enamel Fiend Club badge, all housed in a coffin shaped box. Plenty of bonus songs.

Richard Hell & The Voidoids- "Blank Generation" LP 180 gram (Sire)
Restock of this 70's punk classic.

Ice Cube- "Lethal Injection" LPx2 (Priority)
Back in stock on double LP.

Ice Cube- "Death Certificate" LPx2 (Priority)
Back in stock on double LP.

Ice Cube- "Amerikkka's Most Wanted" LPx2 (Priority)
Back in stock on double LP.

Dr. Dog- "Fate" CD (Pack The Van)
From 2008. For their fifth album, Fate, Dr. Dog intentionally granted high expectations months before the release. Calling it the album that “they were destined to make”, it should make the album’s title a rather obvious one. However, considering that last year’s We All Belong was easily one of the best indie-rock releases of the year, improving upon a release that is widely considered their best may be a daunting task. For a band that has improved with each successive release though, success appeared nearly imminent. And while Fate does not substantially topple We All Belong in terms of overall consistency, it offers a few of the most rewarding moments that can be found on Dr. Dog’s growing discography. Considering that hints indicating Fate as their most expansive release to date were heavily prevalent, it is nearly ironic that the opening moments of “The Breeze” sound like the throwback lo-fi version of Dr. Dog, back in 2004 before My Morning Jacket scooped them up and brought them out on tour to expose them to an audience who would grow extremely fond of the Philly-based five-piece.

Dr. Dog- "We All Belong" CD (Park The Van)
From 2007. Abandoning their usual method of production and opting for a new experience, Dr. Dog recorded We All Belong on a twenty-four-track, two-inch tape machine as opposed to their previous releases, which were recorded on their faithful eight-track. A band that thrives on using creative muscle to overcome the inherent limitations of a minimal amount of equipment, the twenty-four-track introduced new possibilities as well as new challenges. Taking full advantage of both, Dr. Dog managed to make an album that captures the organic spirit so important to the band while introducing new layers of vocal harmonies and textured instrumentation the band had only been able to imagine prior. The recording sessions for We All Belong yielded material that the band did not feel worked with the album as a whole but seemed to work as an excellent bridge between Easy Beat and We All Belong. Dr. Dog released this material in September 2006 as a six-song EP, Takers and Leavers, which Rolling Stone raved "matches The Shins with smart, retro psych rock." We All Belong was recorded in between headlining dates, a European tour with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and US dates with The Strokes.

My Standard Break From Life (Live Acoustic) 11. I'm Dying Tomorrow (Live).”

Devendra Banhart- "Rejoicing In The Hands" CD (Young God)
Fantastic follow up to Banhart’s stunning debut. A wise move was made to go for studio clarity rather than bury the beauty in more lo-fi hiss. In a proper world, there would only be maybe 50 new releases a year and they would all have to meet the standards set by this young loon. Unfortunately the world stinks, but the splendor of Banhart’s finger picked guitar, odd wavering voice and the lovely accompaniment found here almost makes up for it. Includes a duet with Vashti Bunyan on the title track.

Black Mountain- "In the Future" CD+LPx2 (Scratch)
Restock on both formats.

Boards of Canada- "Unreleased Tracks" 12" (Fanclub)
“Limited to 300 copies - DJ friendly comp of very collectible hard-to-find stuff! Tracklisting: 01. Midas Touch (Remix) 02. Korona (Unreleased) 03. Trapped (Hell Interference Mix) 04. Trapped (Short Slow Version)”.

Bon Iver- "For Emma, Forever Ago" CD (Jagjaguwar)
“Bon Iver’s debut full-length For Emma, Forever Ago has been making major waves in critics circles based on the strength of an early artist-pressed advance cd and a couple awe-inspiring sets at CMJ in October 2007. The New York Times called it "irresistible" and Pitchfork stamped its early review of the album with a Recommended tag. For those of you hiding away in a cabin of your own, it’s time that you hear the story, and more importantly, the music. Bon Iver (pronounced: bohn eevair; French for "good winter" and spelled wrong on purpose) is a greeting, a celebration and a sentiment. It is a new statement of an artist moving on and establishing the groundwork for a lasting career. For Emma, Forever Ago is the debut of this lineage of songs. As a whole, the record is entirely cohesive throughout and remains centered around a particular aesthetic, prompted by the time and place for which it was recorded. Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, seems to have tested his boundaries to the maximum, and in doing so has managed to break free from any pre-cursing or finished forms. It wasn’t planned. The goal was to hibernate. Vernon moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter. He lived there alone for three months, filling his days with wood splitting and other chores around the land. This solitary time slowly began feeding a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. The days slowly evolved into nights filled with twelve-hour recording blocks, breaking only for trips on the tractor into the pines to saw and haul firewood, or for frozen sunrises high up a deer stand. All of his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss and guilt that had been stock piled over the course of the past six years, was suddenly purged into the form of song.”

The Chesterfield Kings- "Psychedelic Sunrise" LP+CD (Wicked Cool)
"Very few bands match the Kings' mastery of '60s sounds, and this is a prime collection of originals that brilliantly evoke the period, including a couple of songs that you'd swear were Rolling Stones outtakes." --Ken Barnes, USA TODAY As leaders of the modern garage rock movement, The Chesterfield Kings deliver a sensory experience of psychedelic sight and sound that has earned them legions of fans worldwide. Their latest release is no exception - Psychedelic Sunrise is bursting with twelve original nuggets of mind blowing rock and roll. Liner notes by Andrew Loog Oldham. Mixed by Ed Stasium (The Ramones, Joe Strummer, Talking Heads). Psychedelic Sunrise was influenced by years of collecting, listening and studying every cool record from from the 70s, 60s, 50s and beyond. With influences that include blues, rockabilly, British invasion rock, and punk, the production style of the record reflects the band s love of music and their large arsenal of vintage instruments. Psychedelic Sunrise is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed 2003 release, The Mindbending Sounds Of The Chesterfield Kings.

Damon & Naomi- "More Sad Hits" LP (20|20|20)
“Damon & Naomi present the reissue of their first album, More Sad Hits, on their own 20|20|20 label. Created as a swan song response to the dissolution of Galaxie 500, More Sad Hits was recorded with Galaxie producer Mark Kramer, and is just as cutting a reaction to the sinister allure of fame as it was when released back in 1992. The album was so strong, that a presumed one-off led to a long relationship with Sub Pop Records, who offered to put out future releases after hearing what the duo could accomplish on their own. Damon & Naomi originally released More Sad Hits on Shimmy Disc one year after the breakup of Galaxie 500, when Dean Wareham left the group to pursue a career with Luna on Elektra Records. With no intention of doing any more recording, the duo were nonetheless convinced to go into the studio after Kramer told them he'd assist with both recording and release. While Damon & Naomi have remained publicly silent regarding Wareham's recent autobiography, this album serves as all the answers anyone needs concerning their side of the drama. And with a shimmering and lonely beauty as only they can achieve, the two made a series of songs as emotionally stark as you're likely to hear. It was recently voted one of the "Top Twenty Most Overlooked Psychedelic Albums" along with Skip Spence and 13th Floor Elevators. This remastered reissue contains new liner notes and photos. "More Sad Hits is lovely. Naomi's voice is so true, like real water in a world of soda pop. And it goes right with Damon's. It's right, that fe/male voice doubleact." --Robert Wyatt

Danielson Famile- "Tell Another Joke At The Ol' Choppin' Block" LPx2 (Secretly Canadian)
“September marks the beginning of a season in which we look back upon and celebrate some of our favorite Danielson titles from a rich back catalog that has spanned over a decade. This epic journey of retrospection begins with the vinyl reissues of Tell Another Joke At The Ol’ Choppin’ Block and Fetch The Compass Kids (both being released on Secretly Canadian) and Tri-Danielson!!! (Alpha & Omega) (being released on Sounds Familyre). In addition to being back in print for the first time since 2001, these reissues have some unique attributes such as: Tell Another Joke At The Ol’ Choppin’ Block is now available as a 2x12” LP format (as opposed to the 2x10” format in which it debuted) and includes four bonus songs from a live WFMU session from 1996. Tri Danielson!!! (Alpha & Omega) has been partially remixed and fully remastered and makes its vinyl return dressed up in a brilliant new gatefold jacket along with a very special bonus track. Remember this is just the kick off of a busy season for Danielson, so stay tuned…”

Deerhunter- "Cryptograms" CD (Kranky)
“Cryptograms is the second full-length offering from Deerhunter, and their first for Kranky. The album took almost two years to finish and was the product of emotional, physical, and financial strain on the group. The result is an album that finds the band shifting from discordant catharsis, and forming a sonic identity that completely expresses the place from which they have arrived. The album functions in part as a study in duality and the concept of the same experiences seen from two angles, present and past. The most obvious manifestation of this is in the chronological sequencing. The first half of the album was recorded first unsuccessfully in 2005. These recordings were a blur at best, wordless and bordering on psychological atrophy. The sessions failed to provide anything tangible, and were racked with technical and personal problems, including out-of-tune pianos, panic attacks, and a tape machine that seemed to fail to capture the full spectrum of ambience the band was exploring. The band returned home, having failed, and considered giving up. The idea arose to give it one last shot and exactly one year from the date of the recording of their first self-titled LP at a small studio in rural GA, they returned to that same studio and plugged in. The session resulted in the first half of the record which was recorded in one day and completely filled the reel of tape they brought with them. Cryptograms' first side begins with an introduction leading to the title track, and ends with the tape literally spinning off the end of the reel in the middle of a drone layered with bells and accordion ("Red Ink"). The second half of the record, also recorded in one day, in the November of 2005, represents the band in an entirely different state. "Spring Hall Convert" opens with the line, "…so I woke up…" and introduces a set of focused psyche-pop songs fixating on adolescence, illness, and failing connections. Quote: "…a massive, psych-heavy, art-damaged five-piece, and one of the most inspired new bands we've heard in quite a while. Deerhunter's forthcoming Kranky debut -- not to mention their absolutely fucking insane live shows-- is likely to make them one of the most talked-about bands of 2007." Pitchfork 10.23.06”

Jeremy Enigk- "The Missing Link" CD (567)
“Enigk's biggest claim to fame is his involvement with the band Sunny Day, Real Estate who released five albums from 1993 to 200. The singing style he used in this band is now widespread among current emo vocalists though Enighk has sought to distance himself from these type of bands. Jeremy Enigk returns with the quick follow-up to last year's highly acclaimed "World Waits" which features brand new material along "World Waits".”

Farflung- "A Wound in Eternity" CD+LPx2 (Meteor City)
Primo space rock in a vintage Hawkwind vein. Back in stock on both formats. LP is limited.

Fridge- "Eph" CDx2 (Temporary Residence)
Much anticipated North American version of their debut album plus bonus disc with the out of print Kinoshita Terasaka 7” and Of EP plus two previously unreleased remixes by Matthew Herbert and P Pulsinger. That’s 100 mins of music for much cheaper than the old UK single CD. Fridge always presents some interesting music on its records. From the brilliant early LP Semaphore to much more obscure projects like Indisguise, a joint venture with D, the band is constantly pushing the limits of electro-instrumental music.

Joy Division- "Closer" Medium White T-Shirt

Leadbelly- "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" LP (Cleopatra)

Natheniel Mayer- "Why Don't You Give It To Me" LP (Alive)
"A psychedelic classic!" - Detroit Free Press Following his critically acclaimed comeback album "I Just Want To Be Held" (Fat Possum 2004), Detroit soul legend Nathaniel Mayers new album sounds like the record he should have made in 1970. This time production was the team effort of Matthew Smith (Outrageous Cherry), Dan Auerbach (Black Keys), and Dave Shettler (SSM/The Sights), all simultaneously turning knobs, grabbing faders, and switching various boxes on and off. Troy Gregory (Dirtbombs) played bass. The result is soul music with a psychedelic rock n' roll heart. Purple vinyl!

The Moldy Peaches- "Unreleased Cutz and Live Jamz 1994-2002" CDx2 (Rough Trade)
Double CD package collects an incredible 55 tracks spanning their eight years together. Featured are live and demo versions of Moldy Peaches classics alongside covers of The Grateful Dead, Spin Doctors, Four Seasons and Hulk Hogan. Disc 1 features 32 tracks, including 19 live recordings & alternate acoustic versions while disc 2 is comprised of 22 live recordings, highlighted by ‘Anyone Else But You’ and ‘Who’s Got The Crack’.”

Personality Crisis- "Creatures For a While" LP (War on Music)
“The original 1983 release, available again on LP after being out print for years! For those of you who were three when this album was released, now is your chance to see what the fuss was about. Personality Crisis exploded from Western Canada in the early eighties, determined to blow the hardcore scene wide open. Armed with two raging guitars, a distinctive baritone vocalist, and a killer rhythm section, they did exactly that. Although they released just one album, twenty-five years later, those who witnessed them perform speak in hushed tones about the legendary band that was so unwilling to fit the mold.” For my money, take all of the other ‘classic’ Canadian punk/HC releases and throw them in the trash cuz this is the one you need.

Rage Against The Machine- "People Of The Sun EP" 10" (Revelation)

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez & Jeremy Ward- "ORL + JMV" LP (Willie Anderson)

Laika & The Cosmonauts- "Cosmopolis 1988-2008" CD (Yep Roc)
A 27 track compilation from this cool Finnish instro group. Includes a download coupon for the Metropolis Tapes: A 40 minute score inspired by Fritz Lang's 1927 silent film.

The Tindersticks- "The Hungry Saw" CD+LP (Constellation)
Their first album in 5 years after a shake up in the personnel. Most critics are saying it's as good as anything they've done and judging by the tracks I heard on their myspace page I heartily agree.

Joe Cocker- "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" Deluxe version CDx2 (A&M)
You get the classic live album from 1970 along with 8 previously unreleased live songs as well as 4 rare studio recordings, including "The Letter" & "Space Captain".

Humble Pie- "Rock On" CD (A&M)
Here I go on my 70's kick again! This was one of Humble Pie's most accomplished studio albums, recorded at the height of their short lived popularity. Steve Marriott's voice is simply on fire this time around, wailing out killer tracks like "Stone Cold Fever", "Rolling Stone" & "Sour Grain". One of my favorite albums from the olde days. This CD is one you don't find around much, if ever.

Robyn Hitchcock- "Fegmania" CD (Yep Roc)
Part of the "it's about time someone reissued these great albums" series. One of the UK's more colorful psyche popsters who never did anything but, write one great surreal tune after another. Released in 1985. Highly recommended.

Robyn Hitchcock- "Element Of Light" CD (Yep Roc)
Part of the "it's about time someone reissued these great albums" series. One of the UK's more colorful psyche popsters who never did anything but, write one great surreal tune after another. Highly recommended.

The Knife- "Silent Shout" CD (Mute)
This is the Deluxe version that has 2xCD + DVD in a nice little box.

The Real McKenzies- "Off The Leash" CD+LP (Fat Wreck)
Vancouver's THE REAL McKENZIES are true gadabouts at heart. Fueled by an insatiable appetite for filthy punk shows, Scotch whiskey, and all out mayhem, these kilt-clad punks continue on their quest to bring their patented brand of music to the masses. Their latest concoction, Off the Leash, embodies the spirit of THE REAL McKENZIES through a melding of driving punk rhythms and traditional Scottish melodies. Guitars and bagpipes play off each other as Paul McKenzie spins yarns of times long past and recounts endless drunken revelries. The unbridled energy and merriment of Off the Leash will immediately have the listener hoisting a pint glass and singing along to the 13 infectious tracks. As always, THE McKENZIES will be hitting the road hard, bringing the album to life in an inebriated whirlwind of kilts, bagpipes and punk rock.

Funkadelic- "Maggot Brain" LP 180 gram (4 Men With Beards)
Funkadelic was George Clinton's chance to get serious. Unlike Parliament, Funkadelic exhibited topical lyrics and an almost heavy-metal edge, one that included screeching, distorted guitar and unsettling musical turns. This 1971 album, Funkadelic's second release, catches the ensemble in its early prime. The Hendrix-inspired dramatics come courtesy of Eddie Hazel, while Bernie Worrell admirably handles the keyboard chores. Clinton's humorous, sober lyrics address poverty, race relations, and drug use. Musically, the band covers lots of ground: Everything from smooth soul and heavy rock to abstract psychedelia and straight-on funky grooves has a place, and these jarring shifts are what make the album a revolutionary work.

The Saints- "I'm Stranded" LP 180 gram (4 Men With Beards)
(I'M) STRANDED was the first punk rock album released anywhere on the planet (the Aussies got there first!) Musically it exemplifies much of the genre, with its full-speed guitars and raw sound, but the Saints went a bit beyond. Their excellent songwriting featured a few more chords than was the norm later, they weren't afraid of guitar solos or slow songs, and instead of the usual punk yelp, the vocals were delivered with a wonderfully cool drawl/sneer -- comparable to Dave Vanian on the first Damned album. More than two decades later, this album remains an unbeatable adrenaline rush.

Radiohead- OK Computer" LPx2 (Capitol)
Restock.

Joe Cocker- "Cry Me A River" DVD (Eagle Vision)
Eagle Vision continues our new program of releases from the archives of the German WDR TV series Rockpalast with this classic concert from Joe Cocker. The show was filmed at the Metropol in Berlin on October 31st 1980 with Cocker in fine voice on a strong set with many of his most famous tracks including "Delta Lady", "Cry Me A River", "The Letter", "You Are So Beautiful" and his definitive take on the Lennon & McCartney classic "With A Little Help From My Friends". Also included are some rarer tracks including his versions of "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine".
TRACK LISTING 1. Cry Me A River 2. Feelin' Alright 3. Put Out The Light 4. A Whiter Shade Of Pale 5. Delta Lady 6. Hitchcock Railway 7. Sweet Forgiveness 8. You Are So Beautiful 9. With A Little Help From My Friends 10. I Heard It Through The Grapevine 11. The Letter 12. High Time We Went.

Metallica- "Death Magnetic" LPx2 (Warner)
The new album now here on double LP. Cheaper than the recent reissue series of their early albums. Look for a not so cheap deluxe 5xLP boxset of the new album coming soon.

Passport- "Cross Collateral" CD (Wounded Bird)
Bizarre German band from 70's that sounded like a mash up of Kraftwerk & Weather Report. Led by multi horn playing Klaus Doldinger. Most of their back catalogue has been released by Wounded Bird. This one is from 1975.

Frank Zappa- "Shut Up & Play Yr Guitar" CDx3 (Barking Pumpkin)
The title says it all. Three cd's loaded with nothing but Frank shredding on his famous Gibson SG.

Pink Floyd- "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" CDx3 (Capitol)
To mark the 40th anniversary of the original release of Pink Floyd's first album 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn', a special edition is now available. The packaging, designed by Storm Thorgerson, resembles a cloth-covered book, and holds 3 CD discs, along with a 12-page reproduction Syd Barrett notebook. Discs 1 and 2 contain the full 'Piper' album, represented in both stereo and mono versions. Both have been newly remastered by James Guthrie. Disc 3 includes bonus tracks, including the following: all the Pink Floyd singles from 1967, ('Arnold Layne', 'See Emily Play', and 'Apples And Oranges'), plus the B sides 'Candy And A Current Bun' and 'Paintbox'. Other tracks are a version of 'Interstellar Overdrive' - Take 2 of the original recording sessions, previously only available on an EP in France - and the 1967 stereo version of 'Apples And Oranges'. EMI. 2007.

The Asteroid #4- "An Amazing Dream" CD (Rainbow Quartz)
An excellent psyche/pop shoegaze CD from 2006.

Calexico- "Feast Of Wire" LPx2 (1/4 Stick)
back in stock on double LP.

Carlos Santana & Mahavishnu John McLaughlin- "Love Devotion Surrender" CD (CBS)
A hopelessly misunderstood record in its time by Santana fans -- they were still reeling from the radical direction shift toward jazz on Caravanserai and praying it was an aberration -- it was greeted by Santana devotees with hostility, contrasted with kindness from major-league critics like Robert Palmer. To hear this recording in the context of not only Carlos Santana's development as a guitarist, but as the logical extension of the music of John Coltrane and Miles Davis influencing rock musicians -- McLaughlin, of course, was a former Davis sideman -- this extension makes perfect sense in the post-Sonic Youth, post-rock era. With the exception of Coltrane's "Naima" and McLaughlin's "Meditation," this album consists of merely three extended guitar jams played on the spiritual ecstasy tip -- both men were devotees of guru Shri Chinmoy at the time. The assembled band included members of Santana's band and the Mahavishnu Orchestra in Michael Shrieve, Billy Cobham, Doug Rauch, Armando Peraza, Jan Hammer (playing drums!), and Don Alias. But it is the presence of the revolutionary jazz organist Larry Young -- a colleague of McLaughlin's in Tony Williams' Lifetime band -- that makes the entire project gel. He stands as the great communicator harmonically between the two very different guitarists whose ideas contrasted enough to complement one another in the context of Young's aggressive approach to keep the entire proceeding in the air. (AMG)

Ron Wood- "Gimme Some Neck" CD (CBS)
Wood leads a pickup band that includes, on various cuts, fellow Rolling Stones Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger, and Keith Richards, plus Mick Fleetwood, Dave Mason, and other notables. The highlight is a then-unreleased Bob Dylan song called "Seven Days," where the rough-voiced Wood sounds uncannily like Mr. D himself. Budget priced.

Venom- "Hell" LP (Universal)
Venom are a heavy metal/first wave of black metal band, formed in late 1979 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Coming to prominence towards the end of the 'New Wave of British Heavy Metal', Venom have found little mainstream success or critical acclaim, but are widely regarded as highly influential, particularly for their first two albums, Welcome to Hell (1981) and Black Metal (1982). The title of Venom's second album would become influential and definitive enough to describe an entire subgenre called black metal, a category under which the band is most commonly referred.[The nature of Venom's high-pitch guitars, harsh vocals, use of pseudonyms, and unrelenting emphasis on Satanic lyrics and imagery is considered the template for the subgenre's later successes, and arguably for the broader extreme metal movement in general. "Hell" is their brand new album.

Malcolm Holcombe- "Gamblin' House" CD (Echo Mountain)
The first thing one notices when listening to North Carolina native Malcolm Holcombe is his voice. To call it gruff is like calling the Empire State Building tall, or the Grand Canyon wide. The self-professed smoker sounds like he swallows unfiltered Camels whole and washes them down with cheap moonshine from a brown bottle. Holcombe may sonically appear to be as old as the hills, but generally has the concerns of a younger man. And the thing is, the Tar Heel singer’s coarse country vocals have a populist appeal. He sounds like the kind of guy one might swap stories with at a bar or barbershop, and smile a lot at the easy flow of conversation.

Tim Hus- "Bush Pilot Buckaroo" CD (Stony Plain)
Some extremely fine country & roots from this Calgary saddle tramp. Big hat, no cattle.

Lucero- "Nobody's Darlings" CD (Liberty & Lament)
Restock of this 2005 release. Recommended if you like Drive By Truckers etc.

Sugar- "Copper Blue" CD (Ryko)
Restock. Bob Mould's (Husker Du) next band after going solo for awhile. A huge indie rock seller back in the early 90's.

Jeff Walker & Die Fluffers- "Welcome To Carcass Cuntry" CD (Cargo)
Wow! The singer dude from Carcass puts out an album of his fave country songs. Perfect for around the campfire, or just annoying your friends.

Frank Zappa- "Roxy & Elsewhere" CD (Ryko)
Live @ The Roxy from 1974.

The Residents- "Duck Stab" CD (Cryptic/Mute)
Over the course of a recording career spanning several decades, the Residents remained a riddle of Sphinx-like proportions; cloaking their lives and music in a haze of willful obscurity, the band's members never identified themselves by name, always appearing in public in disguise -- usually tuxedos, top hats and giant eyeball masks -- and refusing to grant media interviews. Drawing inspiration from the likes of fellow innovators including Harry Partch, Sun Ra, and Captain Beefheart, the Residents channelled the breadth of American music into their idiosyncratic, satiric vision, their mercurial blend of electronics, distortion, avant-jazz, classical symphonies and gratingly nasal vocals reinterpreting everyone from John Philip Sousa to James Brown while simultaneously expanding the boundaries of theatrical performance and multimedia interaction.

Noisettes- "Whats The Time Mr. Wolf?" CD (Universal)
Playing ragged but energetic garage-influenced indie rock with the ferocity of punk but with a soulful, bluesy edge, the Noisettes were founded by guitarist Dan Smith and singer/bassist Shingai Shoniwa, who previously worked together in the band Sonarfly. Likened to a White Stripes fronted by Billie Holiday kinda thing.

TV On the Radio- "Dear Science" CD + LP (Interscope)

Tim Buckley- "S/T" LP (Elektra)
A true original, Tim had a 3 octave voice and sang like an angel. He skirted around the folk idiom with layers of jazz & rock in the mix as well. The father of Jeff Buckley, in case you didn't know. Tim O.D'd in 1975. Good stuff!

Lagwagon- "I Think My Older Brother Used To Listen To...." LP (Fat Wreck)

Brant Bjork- "Sabbia" DVD (Duna)
Incredible tapestry of desert images shot by KATE McCABE woven to music by BRANT BJORK. 80 minutes.

Jesus Lizard- "Liar" LP (Touch & Go)
Ugly angular rock from the band that wrote the book on ugly angular rock. From the first few seconds, in which "Boilermaker" leaps out of the speakers like a crank-addled mugger armed with a tire iron, Liar captures the Jesus Lizard in gloriously manic and muscular form. From 1992.

Wendy O. Williams & The Plasmatics- "10 Years Of Revolutionary Rock'n'Roll" DVD (MVD) Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics, as rock writer John Levy said in a recent interview on VH1, "were a phenomenon". From 1978-1988 \\"The Queen of Punk\\", "The High Priestess of Metal", \\"The Dominatrix of Decibels\\", and \\"Queen of Shock Rock\\", assaulted the conformist culture of the status quo to radicalize and transform mass culture and music in ways that are still being played out today. From the banning in London, the arrests in Cleveland and Milwaukee, the death defying videos and live shows, to Wendy's Grammy nomination as \\"Best Female Rock Vocalist of the Year\\", this historic DVD with over 3 hours of material, much of it previously unreleased footage, spans the full jaw-dropping 10 years;the triumphs, the challenges, and the forces that tried to shut it all down. Sonic Youth- "Corporate Ghost" DVD (Geffen)
Corporate Ghost finds Sonic Youth embracing the music-video format in a big and exciting way with the 1990 release of their hit album, Goo. The band produced a video for each of Goo's 11 tracks, and that collection forms the first half of this stylistically eclectic anthology. Sonic Youth's enthusiasm also drew significant filmmaking talent: Dave Markey (1991: The Year Punk Broke) directs the witty, histrionic "Mildred Pierce," which looks like a 1940s experimental biography of Joan Crawford. Far from Heaven's Todd Haynes makes a fascinating fever dream of "Disappearer," telegraphing angst about the difference between public and private identity. Tamra Davis (Guncrazy) delivers both the MTV-accessible "Dirty Boots" as well as the deliriously sexy "Kool Thing." Later videos include the fashion show trappings of "Sugar Kane," the mesmerizing duet between bassist-singer Kim Gordon and guest Kim Deal on "Little Trouble Girl," and a grabby, time-manipulated video for "Sunday" by Harmony Korine (Gummo).

Coheed & Cambria- "No World For Tomorrow" LPx2 (Columbia)
