Don Caballero- "Punkgasm" LPx2 (Relapse)
Punkgasm is the sixth studio album by Don Caballero, the Pittsburgh-based Math Rock band. The 2008 album Punkgasm explodes with all of the band's legendary trademarks: wildly inventive poly-rhythms; layers of looping guitar acrobatics; rich melodies & textures; & expansive compositions that evolve & unfold from start to finish. The album's more relaxed feel sees the band pushing their sound in a host of surprising new directions.
Forbidden Dimension- "A Cool Sound Outta Hell" LP+CD (Saved by Vinyl)
The Forbidden Dimension began originally as a one-man band in 1988, but over the course of 19 years, Jackson Phibes (Earth name: Tom Bagley) has worked with a host of other local Calgary musician pals. In 2006, FD began recording A Cool Sound Outta Hell, the first full-length project since 1997's Widow's Walk. The album comprises songs worked up secretly during the intervening years along with a clutch of brand new stompers honed in the live setting. It's a surefire combination of catchy garage rock, psychedelic mood modifiers and ornate protometallic ravers. The FD were delighted to find that Calgary's Saved By Vinyl label was expressing interest in doing the full 12-inch vinyl release, a first for the band which has continued priding itself on keeping it fun, loud and creepy-assed. Since starting out in the Calgary-based garage rock band Color Me Psycho in 1985, Phibes has been dishing out macabre-tinged, psychedelic punk rock for over two decades. CMP managed to stay together for 3 years of tyranny and stagnation, releasing a few tapes and one full-length piece of vinyl (the now collector's item Pretend I'm Your Father album). Immediately following the demise of his first ill-fated stab at the smalltime, Phibes set about initiating a headlong dive into the B-movie rock ghettos with the Forbidden Dimension. Three critically well-received, full-length CDs were recorded and released by the now defunct Cargo Records. These, along with a brace of singles on various small labels, found an ardent international cult audience. A fourth CD was released by an Ann Arbor, MI label, Reanimator Records, in 2000. This collection of home-made, one-man band recordings reached #3 on the !Earshot chart that summer. "no one could ever match Phibes's witty graveyard songwriting and funny approach to the macabre." In musical terms, Skiperoo is more of a continuation from its subdued predecessor than it is a return to the wide-ranging stylistic exploration of No Such Place (although the boisterous singalong "Crash Into the Sun" recalls that album's excellent loop-based rockers.) But White's distinctive, evocative blend of folk, country, gospel, blues, and pop never quite squares with the sum of its components, and as usual there's enough atmospheric sonic tomfoolery (the production this time around was mostly handled by Pernice Brothers Joe Pernice and Mike Deming) and unusual instrumental choices to keep it sounding agreeably, well, transnormal.

Santa Monica '72 is a live album by David Bowie, recorded at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on 20 October 1972 during the Ziggy Stardust tour. Taken from an FM radio broadcast, it was available only as a bootleg for more than 20 years; according to author David Buckley, possessing a copy was the test of a "proper Bowie fan". The recording was issued officially by the Golden Years label in 1994, with Griffin Music handling the American release in 1995.

Brightblack Morning Light do nothing but chill out yet farther on Motion to Rejoin. Recorded in the secluded New Mexico desert with many self-enforced limitations -- most notable of which is the restriction of studio power to direct solar radiation (aka daylight) -- Rachael Hughes and Naybob Shineywater have fashioned another record that cobbles together eight tracks from what seems like a maximum of two or three different grooves. The duo and their compatriots nonetheless continue to sound great, even if their music's true aim is nothing more than relaxation or meditation. Hughes' Rhodes piano and Shineywater's Silvertone guitar or Hohner clavinet amble through the album, calling up the ghosts of the American Southwest (and South), even as they veer yet closer to nearer descendants like Talk Talk and Spiritualized.

Transformer and "Walk on the Wild Side" were both major hits in 1972, to the surprise of both Lou Reed and the music industry, and with Reed suddenly a hot commodity, he used his newly won clout to make the most ambitious album of his career, Berlin. Berlin was the musical equivalent of a drug-addled kid set loose in a candy store; the album's songs, which form a loose story line about a doomed romance between two chemically fueled bohemians, were fleshed out with a huge, boomy production (Bob Ezrin at his most grandiose) and arrangements overloaded with guitars, keyboards, horns, strings, and any other kitchen sink that was handy (the session band included Jack Bruce, Steve Winwood, Aynsley Dunbar, and Tony Levin). And while Reed had often been accused of focusing on the dark side of life, he and Ezrin approached Berlin as their opportunity to make The Most Depressing Album of All Time, and they hardly missed a trick. Soundtrack- "Black Snake Moan" LP (New West)
This soundtrack to the film written and directed by Craig Brewer is as steeped in the Southern blues as his Hustle and Flow was in hip-hop. The biggest surprise here is how well actor Samuel L. Jackson (who seems to have a thing for "Snake" films) holds his own as a blues singer against selections from Son House and R.L. Burnside. He sounds like a throwback to the classic Delta bluesmen on "Just Like a Bird Without a Feather," does a convincing take on the Blind Lemon Jefferson title track, and rocks the juke joint on "Alice Mae" and a down-and-dirty recasting of "Stack-O-Lee." Produced by the Bo-Keys' Scott Bomar (who also scored Brewer's previous movie), the 17-cut soundtrack features a kaleidoscopic array of blues, from the primal throb of the Black Keys' "When the Lights Go Out" and the funk of Bobby Rush's classic "Chicken Heads" to the spiritual lilt of Precious Bryant's "Morning Train" and the North Mississippi Allstars' expansive finale, "Mean Ol' Wind Died Down."

Dr. Dog- "Fate" CD (Pack The Van)
From 2008. For their fifth album, Fate, Dr. Dog intentionally granted high expectations months before the release. Calling it the album that “they were destined to make”, it should make the album’s title a rather obvious one. However, considering that last year’s We All Belong was easily one of the best indie-rock releases of the year, improving upon a release that is widely considered their best may be a daunting task. For a band that has improved with each successive release though, success appeared nearly imminent. And while Fate does not substantially topple We All Belong in terms of overall consistency, it offers a few of the most rewarding moments that can be found on Dr. Dog’s growing discography. Considering that hints indicating Fate as their most expansive release to date were heavily prevalent, it is nearly ironic that the opening moments of “The Breeze” sound like the throwback lo-fi version of Dr. Dog, back in 2004 before My Morning Jacket scooped them up and brought them out on tour to expose them to an audience who would grow extremely fond of the Philly-based five-piece.
Dr. Dog- "We All Belong" CD (Park The Van)
From 2007. Abandoning their usual method of production and opting for a new experience, Dr. Dog recorded We All Belong on a twenty-four-track, two-inch tape machine as opposed to their previous releases, which were recorded on their faithful eight-track. A band that thrives on using creative muscle to overcome the inherent limitations of a minimal amount of equipment, the twenty-four-track introduced new possibilities as well as new challenges. Taking full advantage of both, Dr. Dog managed to make an album that captures the organic spirit so important to the band while introducing new layers of vocal harmonies and textured instrumentation the band had only been able to imagine prior. The recording sessions for We All Belong yielded material that the band did not feel worked with the album as a whole but seemed to work as an excellent bridge between Easy Beat and We All Belong. Dr. Dog released this material in September 2006 as a six-song EP, Takers and Leavers, which Rolling Stone raved "matches The Shins with smart, retro psych rock." We All Belong was recorded in between headlining dates, a European tour with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and US dates with The Strokes.

Fantastic follow up to Banhart’s stunning debut. A wise move was made to go for studio clarity rather than bury the beauty in more lo-fi hiss. In a proper world, there would only be maybe 50 new releases a year and they would all have to meet the standards set by this young loon. Unfortunately the world stinks, but the splendor of Banhart’s finger picked guitar, odd wavering voice and the lovely accompaniment found here almost makes up for it. Includes a duet with Vashti Bunyan on the title track.

“Bon Iver’s debut full-length For Emma, Forever Ago has been making major waves in critics circles based on the strength of an early artist-pressed advance cd and a couple awe-inspiring sets at CMJ in October 2007. The New York Times called it "irresistible" and Pitchfork stamped its early review of the album with a Recommended tag. For those of you hiding away in a cabin of your own, it’s time that you hear the story, and more importantly, the music. Bon Iver (pronounced: bohn eevair; French for "good winter" and spelled wrong on purpose) is a greeting, a celebration and a sentiment. Created as a swan song response to the dissolution of Galaxie 500, More Sad Hits was recorded with Galaxie producer Mark Kramer, and is just as cutting a reaction to the sinister allure of fame as it was when released back in 1992. The album was so strong, that a presumed one-off led to a long relationship with Sub Pop Records, who offered to put out future releases after hearing what the duo could accomplish on their own. Damon & Naomi originally released More Sad Hits on Shimmy Disc one year after the breakup of Galaxie 500, when Dean Wareham left the group to pursue a career with Luna on Elektra Records. Deerhunter- "Cryptograms" CD (Kranky)
“Cryptograms is the second full-length offering from Deerhunter, and their first for Kranky. The album took almost two years to finish and was the product of emotional, physical, and financial strain on the group. The result is an album that finds the band shifting from discordant catharsis, and forming a sonic identity that completely expresses the place from which they have arrived. The album functions in part as a study in duality and the concept of the same experiences seen from two angles, present and past. The most obvious manifestation of this is in the chronological sequencing. The first half of the album was recorded first unsuccessfully in 2005. These recordings were a blur at best, wordless and bordering on psychological atrophy. The sessions failed to provide anything tangible, and were racked with technical and personal problems, including out-of-tune pianos, panic attacks, and a tape machine that seemed to fail to capture the full spectrum of ambience the band was exploring. The band returned home, having failed, and considered giving up. The idea arose to give it one last shot and exactly one year from the date of the recording of their first self-titled LP at a small studio in rural GA, they returned to that same studio and plugged in. The session resulted in the first half of the record which was recorded in one day and completely filled the reel of tape they brought with them. Cryptograms' first side begins with an introduction leading to the title track, and ends with the tape literally spinning off the end of the reel in the middle of a drone layered with bells and accordion ("Red Ink"). The second half of the record, also recorded in one day, in the November of 2005, represents the band in an entirely different state. "Spring Hall Convert" opens with the line, "…so I woke up…" and introduces a set of focused psyche-pop songs fixating on adolescence, illness, and failing connections. Funkadelic was George Clinton's chance to get serious. Unlike Parliament, Funkadelic exhibited topical lyrics and an almost heavy-metal edge, one that included screeching, distorted guitar and unsettling musical turns. This 1971 album, Funkadelic's second release, catches the ensemble in its early prime. The Hendrix-inspired dramatics come courtesy of Eddie Hazel, while Bernie Worrell admirably handles the keyboard chores. Clinton's humorous, sober lyrics address poverty, race relations, and drug use. Musically, the band covers lots of ground: Everything from smooth soul and heavy rock to abstract psychedelia and straight-on funky grooves has a place, and these jarring shifts are what make the album a revolutionary work.

(I'M) STRANDED was the first punk rock album released anywhere on the planet (the Aussies got there first!) Musically it exemplifies much of the genre, with its full-speed guitars and raw sound, but the Saints went a bit beyond. Their excellent songwriting featured a few more chords than was the norm later, they weren't afraid of guitar solos or slow songs, and instead of the usual punk yelp, the vocals were delivered with a wonderfully cool drawl/sneer -- comparable to Dave Vanian on the first Damned album. More than two decades later, this album remains an unbeatable adrenaline rush.

The show was filmed at the Metropol in Berlin on October 31st 1980 with Cocker in fine voice on a strong set with many of his most famous tracks including "Delta Lady", "Cry Me A River", "The Letter", "You Are So Beautiful" and his definitive take on the Lennon & McCartney classic "With A Little Help From My Friends". Carlos Santana & Mahavishnu John McLaughlin- "Love Devotion Surrender" CD (CBS)
A hopelessly misunderstood record in its time by Santana fans -- they were still reeling from the radical direction shift toward jazz on Caravanserai and praying it was an aberration -- it was greeted by Santana devotees with hostility, contrasted with kindness from major-league critics like Robert Palmer. To hear this recording in the context of not only Carlos Santana's development as a guitarist, but as the logical extension of the music of John Coltrane and Miles Davis influencing rock musicians -- McLaughlin, of course, was a former Davis sideman -- this extension makes perfect sense in the post-Sonic Youth, post-rock era. With the exception of Coltrane's "Naima" and McLaughlin's "Meditation," this album consists of merely three extended guitar jams played on the spiritual ecstasy tip -- both men were devotees of guru Shri Chinmoy at the time. The assembled band included members of Santana's band and the Mahavishnu Orchestra in Michael Shrieve, Billy Cobham, Doug Rauch, Armando Peraza, Jan Hammer (playing drums!), and Don Alias. But it is the presence of the revolutionary jazz organist Larry Young -- a colleague of McLaughlin's in Tony Williams' Lifetime band -- that makes the entire project gel. He stands as the great communicator harmonically between the two very different guitarists whose ideas contrasted enough to complement one another in the context of Young's aggressive approach to keep the entire proceeding in the air. Wood leads a pickup band that includes, on various cuts, fellow Rolling Stones Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger, and Keith Richards, plus Mick Fleetwood, Dave Mason, and other notables. The highlight is a then-unreleased Bob Dylan song called "Seven Days," where the rough-voiced Wood sounds uncannily like Mr. D himself. Budget priced.
Venom- "Hell" LP (Universal)
Venom are a heavy metal/first wave of black metal band, formed in late 1979 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Coming to prominence towards the end of the 'New Wave of British Heavy Metal', Venom have found little mainstream success or critical acclaim, but are widely regarded as highly influential, particularly for their first two albums, Welcome to Hell (1981) and Black Metal (1982). The title of Venom's second album would become influential and definitive enough to describe an entire subgenre called black metal, a category under which the band is most commonly referred.[The nature of Venom's high-pitch guitars, harsh vocals, use of pseudonyms, and unrelenting emphasis on Satanic lyrics and imagery is considered the template for the subgenre's later successes, and arguably for the broader extreme metal movement in general. "Hell" is their brand new album.
Malcolm Holcombe- "Gamblin' House" CD (Echo Mountain)
The first thing one notices when listening to North Carolina native Malcolm Holcombe is his voice. To call it gruff is like calling the Empire State Building tall, or the Grand Canyon wide. The self-professed smoker sounds like he swallows unfiltered Camels whole and washes them down with cheap moonshine from a brown bottle. Holcombe may sonically appear to be as old as the hills, but generally has the concerns of a younger man. And the thing is, the Tar Heel singer’s coarse country vocals have a populist appeal. He sounds like the kind of guy one might swap stories with at a bar or barbershop, and smile a lot at the easy flow of conversation.

Corporate Ghost finds Sonic Youth embracing the music-video format in a big and exciting way with the 1990 release of their hit album, Goo. The band produced a video for each of Goo's 11 tracks, and that collection forms the first half of this stylistically eclectic anthology. Sonic Youth's enthusiasm also drew significant filmmaking talent: Dave Markey (1991: The Year Punk Broke) directs the witty, histrionic "Mildred Pierce," which looks like a 1940s experimental biography of Joan Crawford. Far from Heaven's Todd Haynes makes a fascinating fever dream of "Disappearer," telegraphing angst about the difference between public and private identity. Tamra Davis (Guncrazy) delivers both the MTV-accessible "Dirty Boots" as well as the deliriously sexy "Kool Thing." Later videos include the fashion show trappings of "Sugar Kane," the mesmerizing duet between bassist-singer Kim Gordon and guest Kim Deal on "Little Trouble Girl," and a grabby, time-manipulated video for "Sunday" by Harmony Korine (Gummo).
