Devil's Brigade- "S/T" CD+LP (Hellcat)
Devils Brigade are an all-star punk group featuring Matt Freeman and Tim Armstrong of Rancid and DJ Bonebrake, drummer of X and the Knitters. Rancid fans have always cherished Matts deep punk growl on his featured songs on Rancid albums, and now Devils Brigade brings his singing, rockabilly-inspired bass slap, and classic punk songwriting to the fore. With Tim Armstrongs Duane Eddy lead guitar and the rock-steady rhythm of DJ Bonebrake, Devils Brigade offers up twelve songs that mix equal parts Johnny Cash, the Pogues, and Sun rockabilly, in a combustible cocktail that will have fans slamming on this falls tour with the Street Dogs. On tracks like 'Bridge of Gold' with vocals by Armstrong, the band stretches out, adding mandolin and banjo to their sound, while 'Ride Harley Ride' features some slinky vibraphone. Guest vocals from Rancid's Lars Frederiksen.
Seabear- "We Built A Fire" LP (Morr)
This is the second full-length album by Iceland's Seabear. Defying its humble beginnings as the lo-fi solo project of singer/multi-instrumentalist Sindri Már Sigfússon, Seabear has morphed into a rambling experimental/indie/folk septet. Joining Sigfússon (whose unassisted musings are now released via his Sin Fang Bous moniker, which just made Rolling Stone call him the "Icelandic Beck") are Gudbjörg Hlin Gudmundsdottir, Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir, Halldór Ragnarsson, Örn Ingi Ágústsson, Kjartan Bragi Bjarnason and Sóley Stefánsdóttir -- all working in a wide range of solo-, band- (Kimono, Skakkamanage) and visual art projects in their own right. For" We Built A Fire", all members of the band had equal input in the writing process, thereby creating Seabear's first real collective album. While Sigfússon's unmistakable voice remains the centerpiece, the new joint approach is reflected in songs like "I'll Build You A Fire," where the whole band joins in on vocals. While retaining their signature simplistic and addictive naive indie-folk, the band have branched out stylistically to include elements of straight-up indie rock, intense balladry and even some country twang. There is something instantly familiar about Seabear's songs that resonates with fans and critics alike. Despite scant promotion and airplay behind their debut album release, 2007's "The Ghost That Carried Us Away" (MORR 076CD), their songs and animated videos were a social media hit generating millions of plays. It's a very Icelandic DIY setup -- their music is recorded by the band in their basement studio with its apple carton-covered walls. All artwork and videos are hand-made by Sindri's partner and band mate Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir.

QUICKSILVER's second album for Capitol in 1969, and to many their "piece de resistance". With John Cipollina's guitar to the fore, this classic album was a huge success. The album is essentially centered around the extended reworkings of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love?" and "Mona", as well as the lesser lauded (yet no less intense) contribution of guitarist/vocalist Gary Duncan's"Calvary". This album was the last to feature the original quartet incarnation of QMS. Digitally remastered and slipcased, with new liner notes.

Celebrating one of the most influential hardcore albums of its decade, this Deluxe Edition re-release of Refused's 1998 record The Shape Of Punk To Come brings together the original 12-track genre-bending disc with a previously unreleased live album. Also included is a DVD featuring guitarist Kristofer Steen's 2006 documentary Refused Are Fucking Dead, as well as a host of live performances and videos from the final throws of the band's seven-year career.

Cream- "Disraeli Gears" LP (Polydor)
180 gram reissue on vinyl. Cream teamed up with producer Felix Pappalardi for their second album, Disraeli Gears, a move that helped push the power trio toward psychedelia and also helped give the album a thematic coherence missing from the debut. This, of course, means that Cream get further away from the pure blues improvisatory troupe they were intended to be, but it does get them to be who they truly are: a massive, innovative power trio. The blues still courses throughout Disraeli Gears the swirling kaleidoscopic "Strange Brew" is built upon a riff lifted from Albert King but it's filtered into saturated colors, as it is on "Sunshine of Your Love," or it's slowed down and blurred out, as it is on the ominous murk of "Tales of Brave Ulysses." It's a pure psychedelic move that's spurred along by Jack Bruce's flourishing collaboration with Pete Brown. Together, this pair steers the album away from recycled blues-rock and toward its eccentric British core, for with the fuzzy freakout "Swlabr," the music hall flourishes of "Dance the Night Away," the swinging "Take It Back," and of course, the schoolboy singalong "Mother's Lament," this is a very British record. Even so, this crossed the ocean and also became a major hit in America, because regardless of how whimsical certain segments are, Cream are still a heavy rock trio and Disraeli Gears is a quintessential heavy rock album of the '60s. Yes, its psychedelic trappings tie it forever to 1967, but the imagination of the arrangements, the strength of the compositions, and especially the force of the musicianship make this album transcend its time as well. Black Lips- S/T" LP (Bomp)
Colored vinyl version of Black Lips first LP from 2003. Listen to the first couple of cuts from the Black Lips' self-titled debut album and it sounds like you've uncovered yet another nuevo-garage rock band with an extra shot of punk rock attitude. All well and good, but let the album sink in and you realize these kids have a bit more up their sleeves -- the tres-wasted psychedelia of "Freakout," the creepy blues crawl of "Stone Cold" and "Down and Out," and the free-form dementia of "You're Dumb" prove these guys have been absorbing their influences from any number of less than wholesome sources. A bit like the Dwarves pre-Blood Guts & Pussy, the Black Lips are looking for something dirty, dangerous, and just plain unhealthy beneath the energetic veneer of garage punk, and on this album they don't have much trouble finding it. While the performances are often ragged to the point of near collapse, that seems to be the point much of the time, and the addled wail of singer Cole Alexander is a fine mouthpiece for this journey through the gutters of your mind. Savage and not for the squeamish, but cool stuff for folks who like their rhythm hooch in a dirty glass.

John Mayall & Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton- "S/T" LP (Decca)
Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton was Eric Clapton's first fully realized album as a blues guitarist more than that, it was a seminal blues album of the 1960s, perhaps the best British blues album ever cut, and the best LP ever recorded by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Standing midway between Clapton's stint with the Yardbirds and the formation of Cream, this album featured the new guitar hero on a series of stripped-down blues standards, Mayall pieces, and one Mayall/Clapton composition, all of which had him stretching out in the idiom for the first time in the studio. This album was the culmination of a very successful year of playing with John Mayall, a fully realized blues creation, featuring sounds very close to the group's stage performances, and with no compromises. Credit has to go to producer Mike Vernon for the purity and simplicity of the record; most British producers of that era wouldn't have been able to get it recorded this way, much less released. One can hear the very direct influence of Buddy Guy and a handful of other American bluesmen in the playing. And lest anyone forget the rest of the quartet: future pop/rock superstar John McVie and drummer Hughie Flint provide a rock-hard rhythm section, and Mayall's organ playing, vocalizing, and second guitar are all of a piece with Clapton's work. His guitar naturally dominates most of this record, and he can also be heard taking his first lead vocal, but McVie and Flint are just as intense and give the tracks an extra level of steel-strung tension and power, none of which have diminished across several decades.
John Mayall- "Blues From Laurel Canyon" LP (Decca)
Mayall's first post-Bluesbreakers album saw the man returning to his roots after the jazz/blues fusion that was Bare Wires. Blues from Laurel Canyon is a blues album, through and through. Testimony to this is the fact that there's a guitar solo only 50 seconds into the opening track. Indeed, Mayall dispersed the entire brass section for Blues from Laurel Canyon, and instead chose the solid but relatively limited backing of Mick Taylor (guitar), Colin Allen (drums), and Stephen Thompson (bass). Instantly, it is apparent that John Mayall hasn't lost his touch with the blues. \"Vacation,\" the album's opener, reminds one exactly why this artist is so celebrated for his songwriting ability. The staggering Mick Taylor (here still in his teens) truly proves his worth as a blues guitarist, while Steve Thompson (also in his late teens) works superbly with one of the genre's most interesting drummers, Colin Allen. Blues from Laurel Canyon is as unerring as Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, and equally as musically interesting. Not only is this one of the finest John Mayall albums, it is also a highlight in the blues genus.
George Benson- "Good King Bad/Benson & Farrell" CD (BGO)
Both released in 1976, these albums are the ending of George Bensons career as a jazz guitarist, before he went on to find international success as a vocalist. Acclaimed reed player Joe Farrell features with Benson, whilst other sidesmen include the Brecker brothers, Steve Gadd, Eric Gale, Ronnie Foster and Andy Newmark. These recordings, on Creed Taylors CTI label, both made the US Top 100. Digitally remastered and slipcased, with new liner notes.
Johnny Winter- "Saint & Sinners" CD (CBS)
Johnny Winter's sixth Columbia album was also his second since his comeback from drug addiction. Its predecessor, Still Alive and Well, had been his highest charting effort. Saints & Sinners includes '50s rock & roll oldies like Chuck Berry's "Thirty Days," Larry Williams' "Bony Moronie," and Leiber & Stoller's "Riot in Cell Block #9," recent covers like the Rolling Stones' "Stray Cat Blues," and a couple of originals. (Van Morrison completists should note that the album also contains Winter's cover of Morrison's "Feedback on Highway 101," a typical bluesy groove song that Morrison recorded for his 1973 Hard Nose the Highway album but dropped. Winter's is the only released recording of the song.) Abetted by the members of the old Johnny Winter Band -- Rick Derringer, Randy Jo Hobbs, and Richard Hughes -- plus his brother Edgar Winter and Dan Hartman, Winter produced forceful hard rock focused on his searing lead guitar runs and rough-edged voice.

Allman Brothers Band- "Live At The Fillmore East" LPx2 (Mercury)
Considered by many to be one of the best live albums of all time, this classic album by the Allman Brothers, recorded at the pinnacle of their success, was a huge hit for the band. In 1971 the Allman Brothers were already one of the most popular groups in America, but by the time this album hit the streets their brand of Southern rock had become a national obsession. One of Rolling Stone's 500 greatest albums of all time, it was the bands last with guitar hero Duane Allman who was killed in a motorcycle accident later that year. Gatefold sleeve.

Foals- "Total Life Forever" CD (Warner)
After Foals scrapped the mix of their debut, Antidotes, by TV on the Radios Dave Sitek, it was clear that they were a band that was interested in creating their own sound. That sentiment may be why their follow-up, Total Life Forever, sounds more like a reaction to their first record than a continuation of it. Many of the elements that drove Foals into the spotlight in the first place are definitely still in place. Theres plenty of cascading, Minus the Bear-style guitar work and funky Talking Heads influence in their math-pop-meets-the-dancefloor rhythms. Whats missing is the edge. Total Life Forever is considerably more subdued than its predecessor, lacking much of the uptempo thump found on Antidotes. In its place is a mellower, more spacious sound. While this new sound is still danceable, its far more refined than the angular post-punk riffing that fans might be expecting.
Loyd Miller & The Heliocentrics- "S/T" CD+LPx2 (Strut)
Following their award-winning collaboration with Ethio jazz Godfather Mulatu Astatke, pioneering UK collective THE HELIOCENTRICS resurface alongside another fascinating jazz enigma, ethno-musicologist, jazz maestro and multi-instrumentalist, Lloyd Miller. Learning various instruments and immersing himself in New Orleans jazz through his father, a professional clarinet player, Lloyd Miller first trained himself in the styles of George Lewis and Jimmy Giuffre and cut his first Dixieland jazz 78 rpm record in 1950. Miller has since been a vocal ambassador for preserving the traditions of many forms of Eastern music. In recent years, his mid-60s album 'Oriental Jazz' has become a collectors favourite and the Jazzman label have issued a compilation, 'A Lifetime In Oriental Jazz', covering work from across his career. The renewed interest in his music has spawned this new collaboration with The Heliocentrics, a freeform mix of Eastern arrangements, jazz and angular psychedelics and represents the Heliocentrics' most accomplished work to date.

Groundhogs- "Thank Christ For The Groundhogs: Liberty Years" CDx3 (EMI UK)
With a career that spans an impressive five decades, the GROUNDHOGS are a veritable British blues-rock institution. Originally forming in 1963, with a name borrowed from a John Lee Hooker song, they would in fact back Hooker on his 1964 UK tour, a service they performed for a number of visiting blues legends. As well as their entire first five albums, 'Thank Christ For The Groundhogs: The Liberty Years (1968-1972)' also includes a radio edit of early single "Still A Fool" plus a rare mono mix of 'B.D.D', both appearing on CD for the first time.
G.G. Allin- "Carnival Of Excess" 7"x2 (Ponk)
The most unique recordings of GG ALLIN's storied recording career, 'Carnival Of Excess' is now being released as a full length double single set by Ponk Media. These are the original mixes from the initial sessions that were recorded in Tampa FL., 1991. This is GG like you have never heard him before! This collection features a cover of the Warren Zevon classic "Carmelita". This is the first time 'Carnival of Excess' has been widely released on vinyl. Eight tracks.
Easy Star All Stars- "Dub Side Of The Moon" LP (Easy Star)
It was one of those really stupid ideas that we can all be grateful someone had the guts to follow through with. Yes, it's a reggae version of the Pink Floyd classic Dark Side of the Moon, every track drastically reworked and presented in the same order as on the original album. And yes, it works far, far better than you'd have any right to expect. The artists vary from the relatively obscure (Kirsty Rock, Dollarman) to the big-time (Corey Harris, Frankie Paul, the Meditations) and the musical styles range from roots to dancehall to jungle. Every track works well, but highlights include a very fine (and uncredited) jungle mix of "On the Run" and the great singer-deejay combo track "Time," on which Corey Harris' chesty baritone singing voice is nicely counterbalanced by Ranking Joe's speed-rap. There are several bonus dub mixes tacked onto the end of the program, and while none of them is revelatory they don't detract from the proceedings, either. At the end you realize that you were wrong to even think this was a dumb idea to begin with -- dub's psychedelic mysticism is a perfectly good match for Pink Floyd's mannered weirdness. Highly recommended.
Eddie Hazel- "Jams From The Heart" LP (JDC)
Eddie Hazel rose to fame in the early '70s as part of George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic troupe. An extremely talented and underappreciated guitarist/songwriter, Hazel had no problem nailing down Hendrix-like guitar freakouts ("Maggot Brain") or nasty, straight-up funk ("Loose Booty," "Red Hot Mama"). Although drug abuse would hinder his talents (he went to prison in the late '70s and eventually died in 1993 because of it), Hazel still came through when inspired and focused. Although he did release one official solo album in 1977 (Games, Dames & Guitar Thangs), there wasn't much material left behind where the listener could hear Eddie cut loose on guitar due to the Clinton-generated pressure to write a hit single. All of this is solved by the Jams From the Heart EP, which features some of Eddie's greatest playing ever committed to tape. The tracks are from a 1975 studio session, when he was laying down demos for his upcoming solo debut.

Jon Wayne- "Texas Funeral" LP (Third Man)
A true CULT CLASSIC resurrected by the fine folks at Third Man Records! Originally released in 1985 by the ever-secretive band JON WAYNE, 'Texas Funeral' is the quintessential cult classic. There is no fence-sitting with this album. You're either fully-indoctrinated and can recite the catch-phrase lyrics like "Faders up!", "Aint no country I know!", "No go diggy die" and the all-purpose "Texasss!" or you can't stand it in the least. Rumor was that Quentin Tarantino wanted to include the song "Texas Funeral" on the soundtrack for 'Pulp Fiction' but couldnt even get ahold of the band to license the damn thing. The songs are funny without venturing into comedy, they are punk without resorting to cheap-o pastiche and they are country in the spirit of Merle Haggard and other like-minded renegades.

Superchunk- "Majesty Shredding" CD+LP (Merge)
'Majesty Shredding' is a powerful document of SUPERCHUNK as a band, augmented as needed with well-placed harmonies, keyboards, and guitar overdubs (and some backing vocals courtesy of the Mountain Goats' John Darnielle). Since releasing their first 7" single in 1989, Superchunk has run the gamut of milestone albums: early punk rock stompers, polished mid-career masterpieces, and lush, adventurous curveballs. Conventional wisdom holds that a band two decades into its career can only rehash or reinvent, but with 'Majesty Shredding', Superchunk has done something entirely different. Neither a return nor a departure, 'Majesty Shredding' telescopes two decades into 41 indelible, action packed minutes. It is the sound of youthful exuberance fine tuned with grown-up confidence. And it may very well be Superchunk's best record yet. Live date announced for Vancouver Oct. 13!
Star Fucking Hipsters- "Until We're Dead" LP (Fat Wreck)
Straight out of the squats of NYC, STAR FUCKING HIPSTERS are a veritable who's who of the punk/ ska/crust scene. Originally the brainchild of Leftover Crack vocalist Sturgeon and drummer Brandon Chevalier-Kolling, the band was temporarily derailed by Brandon's tragic and untimely death. Eventually, after reuniting with original LOC drummer Ara Babajian (The Slackers) and friend Frank Piegaro (The Degenerics), STAR FUCKING HIPSTERS was off and running. The further addition of female vocalist Nico de Gaillo (Another Dying Democracy, The Randalls, Casa De Chihuahua) and bassist Yula Beeri (World Inferno Friendship Society) culminated in the frantic and explosive sound that defines their debut full-length, "Until Were Dead". The 13 tracks reflect the bands many influences, while maintaining a concise and directed sound. Pulsing with an unrelenting intensity, and coupled with Sturgeons sociopolitical lyrics, "Until We're Dead" is an onslaught of punk/ska/ crust that will have the listener clamoring for more!
Star Fucking Hipsters- "Never Rest In Peace" LP+CD (AT)
Following their 2008 Fat Wreck Chords debut, Star Fucking Hipsters have returned for a much fiercer second round of sonic glory! 'Never Rest In Peace' is even crustier, combining melodic punk and metal with the token ska tune (featuring a guest appearance from Citizen Fish and Subhumans personnel). The album is the result of a year of live shows, writing, and off-the-map creativity from central Hipster Stza (Leftover Crack, Choking Victim). These tunes display a sharper edge to his rock-solid songwriting, with a couple of tracks that border on crustcore-style metal. The album leaps out of the stereo and clubs your not-so-friendly neighborhood cop with blunt anthems of rebellion and revolution. This is the best-sounding record Stzas done since Choking Victims classic 'No Gods/No Managers'!

'Apparitions', the first full length album by Chicago's LIGHT POLLUTION, has blown the roof off the building. This moody masterpiece of a record combines catchy melodic flights with an edgy sensibility that manifests itself in the subtle flourishes of pop-psychedelia, sophisticated harmonies and the evocative lyrics of front man Jim Cicero. The band's dazzlingly inventive soundscapes and choral arrangements push the current boundaries of pop music far beyond the breaking point to create a perfect hybrid of moody indie pop and psychedelia. In Light Pollution, one can hear hints of current indie faves such as Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, and Deerhunter, but we think they've found a sound all their own. 'Apparitions' is incredibly formed and informed for a debut full length.

Hawkwind- "Bring Me The Head Of Yuri Gagarin" CD (Candlelight)
By summer 1973, less than a year after the conclusion of their Space Ritual extravaganza, Hawkwind had completely revamped their stage show and live set, dismissing several old favorites and standbys in favor of a whole new crop of numbers -- including a few that would never make it onto a studio album, and several more that wouldn't even get into the studio. It is those tracks that, initially, seem the most interesting aspects of this defiantly lo-fi recording, taken from Hawkwind's appearance at London's Wembley Arena that July. But before an imaginatively titled album is completely written off as a sonic wasteground (as all too many critics seem prone to do), it is worth considering that the versions of "Master of the Universe," "Orgone Accumulator," and "Silver Machine" included here are at least the sonic equal of their more brightly heeled cousins. Still, the real treats lie among the new pieces. The opening "Gaga," the first of the "lost" Hawkwind numbers, is little more than a couple of minutes of atmosphere and chatter. But Nik Turner's sci-fi nightmare poem "In the Egg" could readily have replaced "Sonic Attack" (also present here) among the band's most chilling pronouncements, while it is impossible to remain unaffected by the coupling of "Wage War" -- a Burroughs-ian rampage through a future uprising -- and "Urban Guerilla," the band's then-newly released (and banned) single. The imagery is as astounding as it is violent, a blow-by-blow recipe for the overthrow of civilization that is just as terrifying today as it was feasible at the time. Indeed, champions of the underground that they were, Hawkwind might not have been speaking from experience, but they were certainly preaching wishful thinking. Again, Bring Me the Head of Yuri Gagarin is a difficult listen, a muddy stew, a distorted rattle at the back of your ears. But it is also the sound of Hawkwind at their absolute peak, at a time when the revolution was still a romance waiting for consummation.

Easily the most hilarious entry into the Third Man catalog yet, this Green Series ''instructional'' record features Harvard graduate/occasional late night television host Conan O'Brien at his finest. The A-side is Conan's off-the-cuff reinterpretation of the story of Frankenstein's monster and provides a bucketful of belly-laughs. The flip finds Jack White getting involved in the fun and features, in no particular order: Conan's impersonation of the rapper Ludacris, his admission that he hates jokes and White's comical list of nicknames new/old/odd for O'Brien. Secret Sisters- "Big River" 7" (Third Man)
Laura and Lydia Rogers were born and raised in a musical family and they absorbed their distinctive vocal style the old fashioned way - from singing at family picnics and Sunday church services. There's a timeless sound in their voices. You can hear the history of rural American music from the 1920s and a reverence for every musical genre America has produced. Their voices are honest, direct, traditional, and (needless to say) beautiful. Here, Jack White turns his production hand to their debut 45. The A-side cover of Johnny Cash's "Big River" has all the bombast and swagger of a late-night Saturday jam session in an old deserted barn. The vocals of the sisters Rogers are a firm lynchpin in the center holding the band to the ground as they threaten to float into abandon. The flip is their take on the traditional folk song "Wabash Cannonball", popularized by the Carter Family. Musically and vocally were in 1930s Big Band territory here, all banjos, trombones and trumpets with the girls coming off like the Andrews Sisters Southern Gothic cousins.
Mark Sultan- "$" LP (Last gang)
Mark Sultan (also known as BBQ and a frequent collaborator with fellow Spaceshits alumnus King Khan) has made a powerful name for himself with his rough-and-ready brand of blues-infused minimalist rock & roll, but he's exploring some new territory on his second album under his own name, $$. Perhaps the title is meant to be high irony, because $$ is less approachable and "commercial" (for lack of a better word) than much of what Sultan's offered us in the past; this album is a bit short on simple high-energy rave-ups, and instead makes room for longer, noisier pieces in which his crunchy guitar and stomping drums compete with electronic droning and extended atonal solos. There's plenty here in the style we've come to expect from Sultan, like the hard-charging "Don't Look Back," the punk-leaning "Go Berserk," and the upbeat (and even melodic) "Waiting for Me" and "Just to Hold You." But the opening cut, "Icicles," leaves no doubt this is a different kind of Mark Sultan album; dominated by fuzzy guitars, shifting rhythm patterns, and a wavering minor-key melody, the song wanders about for four minutes before Sultan begins to sing, and at 6:30, it sounds like an epic art rock construction compared to anything on The Sultanic Verses. The deeply echoed corridors and wacked-out guitar lines of the closer, "Nobody But You," suggest Sultan and his pals might have been listening to Muddy Waters' infamous psychedelic experiment Electric Mud before heading into the studio, and the results fare only a bit better for Sultan than they did for Waters. And the drifting clouds of free-form noise on "I Am the End" take the tune down a detour that leads both artist and audience to a dead end. Mark Sultan hasn't lost his gift for writing a good song and letting it come to life in the studio, but $$ offers the first suggestions that he's adding self-indulgent thumb-twiddling to his musical repertoire, and while there isn't enough here to ruin the album, there's plenty to make listeners wonder just what he's up to with this stuff.
