Flamin' Groovies- "Jumpin' In The Night" CD (DBK)
The third and last of the Flamin' Groovies late-'70s albums for Sire, Jumpin' in the Night storms out of the gate with the title song, a top-shelf rocker that brings the muscle of the Flamingo-era lineup of the Groovies to the more style-conscious British Invasion sonics of Cyril Jordan's version. Though Jumpin' in the Night never rocks that hard or that well again, it does sound decidedly tighter and tougher than 1978's Flamin' Groovies Now, and guitarist Mike Wilhelm, a new addition to the Now lineup, is much better integrated into their wall of guitars, with the Groovies sounding more solid than they did a year before.

Johnny Cash- "American VI: Ain't No Grave" LP (American)
Released for the occasion of Johnny Cash's 78th birthday, American VI: Ain't No Grave is the final installment in the collaboration between Cash and Rick Rubin that began with 1994’s American Recordings. These ten songs were cut during the same sessions for American V: A Hundred Highways. Guitarists Mike Campbell, Matt Sweeney, Smokey Hormel, and Benmont Tench on keyboards were present, as were other musicians. June Carter Cash died during routine surgery during these sessions. Cash, though grief stricken and with full knowledge that he too was dying due to complications from Parkinson’s disease, worked as often as his health would allow. He died three months after these songs were recorded.

Considered by many to be one of the best live albums of all time, this classic album by the Allman Brothers, recorded at the pinnacle of their success, was a huge hit for the band. In 1971 the Allman Brothers were already one of the most popular groups in America, but by the time this album hit the streets their brand of Southern rock had become a national obsession. One of Rolling Stone's 500 greatest albums of all time, it was the band’s last with guitar hero Duane Allman who was killed in a motorcycle accident later that year. Gatefold sleeve.

Calexico- "Feast Of Wire" LPx2 (Quarter Stick)
Their high water mark album from 2003. Feast of Wire does indeed offer a tantalizing array of sounds new and old from Calexico, including more pop-oriented takes on their already eclectic style as well as some different sonic twists. Though the album features plenty of the atmospheric interludes of their previous work — such as the squelchy, piano-based "Stucco" and the cello- and pedal-steel-driven "Whipping the Horse's Eye" — the overall feel of Feast of Wire is one of restraint and refinement. The album's longest song, the gorgeous, film noir/spaghetti western fusion "Black Heart," tops out at just under five minutes, and the vast majority of the tracks barely make it past the three-minute mark — not enough time for experimentation to turn into self-indulgence.

Merge Records is about to release the latest in FUCKED UP's 'Year Of' series on limited-edition (2000 copies) 12-inch vinyl. Recorded over 6 months by Jon Drew at Giant Studios, 'Year Of The Ox' is the band's fourth record in a continuing 12 year cycle and adds to its evolving retinue of guest musicians. The patient and building "Year Of The Ox" features Nika Rosa Danilova of Zola Jesus for a guest vocal passage and Toronto's string quartet, New Strings Old Puppets. The other track, "Solomon's Song", is a gothic vampire love tribute to 'Twilight', featuring a saxophone solo from Aerin Fogel of the Bitters and heavy synthing from Trust.
Everest- "Ghost Notes" LP (Vapor)
Ghost Notes is the perfect moniker for this album, Everest's first. The group may be new, but the members have been kicking around the L.A. indie scene forever, finally coming together in this amalgamation to resurrect the sounds of the past. Recorded mostly live in the studio entirely on analog tape, the entire set has an early-'70s feel, as well as a glow to the sound that reflects Mike Terry's expert engineering and production. The album divides rather nicely into two halves, just like a vinyl set, with the first half a bit brighter with pop undertones, the second more shadowed and pushing into jam and prog rock territory. Back when Gram Parsons was pioneering the fusion known as “cosmic cowboy music,” it was a bold joining of rock and country. As countless bands followed in his footsteps, the music began to lose the country influence little by little. I’m not judging, it just happened. In its place rose something called Americana, which in turn morphed into the kind of edgy sonic experiments conducted by Wilco. This new genre doesn’t have a name yet, but it is characterized by a blend of Americana, rock, prog, pop, and soul music, with just a bit of the old country vibe remaining. Welcome to this new world the L.A.-based band Everest. Brand new album from April 2010.
Johnny Winter- "Live At The Fillmore East 10/03/70" CD (CCM)
For decades now, we’ve thought of Live Johnny Winter And as the seminal live JW document from the early part of his career. That record, taken from performances at the Fillmore East and from a gig in Florida, was comprised mainly of rock & roll covers and a couple of originals. As a single LP it clocked in at just under 40 minutes. It smokes, but not as hard as this set, recorded a week or two before at the Fillmore East in 1970. Sony let Collectors' Choice take some prime stuff from the vaults for this one. This is the Johnny Winter And group simply tearing it up on a selection of originals and covers. The sound quality is phenomenal and the energy on this gig not only rivals that of the previous record, it leaves it in the dust. For listeners who are casting a wary eye at this review, one need only compare the two versions of “Good Morning Little School Girl,” which are only a second different in length. That said, the symbiotic interplay between Winter and second lead guitarist Rick Derringer (who went by his real name of Zehringer then) on this version sounds like a switchblade duel. The other two cuts that are duplicated, “It’s My Own Fault” and “Mean Town Blues,” are both much longer on this gig. The former clocks in at 22 minutes and the latter at 18. The improvisation and guitar challenges are voluminous, wildly energetic, and creative. “Highway 61 Revisited\" here contains the slide guitar workout from Winter we hoped for on the Second Winter album and never got. The furious abandon he plays with is unchallenged on any of his live records; it’s Elmore James by way of Mike Bloomfield with Winter's gnarly single-string fills, full of distortion and barely controlled volume. The version of “Mean Town Blues” on this set becomes the definitive one -- in large part because of Derringer’s complementary counterpoint lead work -- as does “It’s My Own Fault,” which transcends its slow tempo and becomes something wholly other. The closing read of Muddy Waters’ “Rollin’ and Tumblin'” is only 4:33, but makes one wish it were three times that long. Its fiery, steel-melting intensity features some of the most vicious slide guitar on record to come out of the '70s. The only track that really doesn’t impress here is “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo,” but not because its performance is substandard. It’s simply that in comparison to all the brilliant spontaneity and furious energy on the rest of the set, it feels too controlled. But that’s hardly a complaint. Even though Derringer wrote it, this one blows away the JWA studio version or Derringer's own hit single take. This set blows the stuff in Winter’s own officially released bootleg series away, and becomes his definitive live recording, hands down.
Dead Weather- "Blue Blood Blues" 7" & 12" (Third Man)
The standout track on the DEAD WEATHER's sophomore album 'Sea Of Cowards' and its second single, "Blue Blood Blues" is full of bluster and wicked licks. With lead vocals by Jack White, the lyrics are line after line of gems all worth repeating, especially "All the white girls trip when I sing at Sunday service". Backed with a live version of the track "Jawbreaker" (7") that explodes with an abandon not found on the studio version. The B-side (12") "No Hassle Night", recorded live, is 9+ minutes of slithering blues with a brief foray into the Muddy Waters classic "I Just Wanna Make Love to You".
Conan O'Brien- "And They Call Me Mad" 7" (Third Man)
Easily the most hilarious entry into the Third Man catalog yet, this Green Series ''instructional'' record features Harvard graduate/occasional late night television host Conan O'Brien at his finest. The A-side is Conan's off-the-cuff reinterpretation of the story of Frankenstein's monster and provides a bucketful of belly-laughs. The flip finds Jack White getting involved in the fun and features, in no particular order: Conan's impersonation of the rapper Ludacris, his admission that he hates jokes and White's comical list of nicknames new/old/odd for O'Brien. Guffaws guaranteed!
Devil's Brigade- "S/T" LP (Hellcat)
Devil’s Brigade are an all-star punk group featuring Matt Freeman and Tim Armstrong of Rancid and DJ Bonebrake, drummer of X and the Knitters. Rancid fans have always cherished Matt’s deep punk growl on his featured songs on Rancid albums, and now Devil’s Brigade brings his singing, rockabilly-inspired bass slap, and classic punk songwriting to the fore. With Tim Armstrong’s Duane Eddy lead guitar and the rock-steady rhythm of DJ Bonebrake, Devil’s Brigade offers up twelve songs that mix equal parts Johnny Cash, the Pogues, and Sun rockabilly, in a combustible cocktail that will have fans slamming on this fall’s tour with the Street Dogs. On tracks like 'Bridge of Gold' with vocals by Armstrong, the band stretches out, adding mandolin and banjo to their sound, while 'Ride Harley Ride' features some slinky vibraphone. Section 25- "Retrofit" CD (LTM)
LTM are delighted to present the seventh studio album from cult Factory Records group Section 25, titled Retrofit. Formed in Blackpool (UK) by brothers Larry and Vin Cassidy in 1978, the band were initially mentored by Joy Division, and went on to record four albums with Factory Records. The first of these, Always Now, offered Krautrock and psychedelia produced by Martin 'Zero' Hannett. Their third, From The Hip, produced in 1984 by Bernard Sumner of New Order, explored techno and electronica, and spawned the oft-sampled club hit Looking From A Hilltop. Now recognized as a leading genre band, three Section 25 tracks were included in the recent Warners box set Factory Records: Communications 1978-1992, with From The Hip lauded as one of '1000 albums to hear before you die' by The Guardian newspaper. After a decade apart, Section 25 released Part-Primitiv in 2007 and Nature + Degree in 2009, as well as playing a string of powerful live shows across Europe and America. Retrofit was recorded before the untimely death of Larry Cassidy in February 2010, and sees the group revisit 10 key tracks from their estimable back catalogue, remade and remodelled using new technology, and closing with a compelling remix of Looking From A Hilltop by New Order member Stephen Morris. Retrofit also includes an exclusive brand new track, Uberhymn.
Jon Wayne- "Texas Funeral" LP (Third Man)
A true CULT CLASSIC resurrected by the fine folks at Third Man Records! Originally released in 1985 by the ever-secretive band Jon Wayne, 'Texas Funeral' is the quintessential cult classic. There is no fence-sitting with this album. You're either fully-indoctrinated and can recite the catch-phrase lyrics like "Faders up!", "Ain’t no country I know!", "No go diggy die" and the all-purpose "Texasss!" or you can't stand it in the least. Rumor was that Quentin Tarantino wanted to include the song \"Texas Funeral\" on the soundtrack for 'Pulp Fiction' but couldn’t even get ahold of the band to license the damn thing. The songs are funny without venturing into comedy, they are punk without resorting to cheap-o pastiche and they are country in the spirit of Merle Haggard and other like-minded renegades.
Tallest Man On Earth- "Shallow Grave" CD (Important)
Reissue of his first album. The debut by the Tallest Man on Earth (alias Kristian Mattson, a youthful Swede of average height) is one of those albums that is truly difficult to convince yourself was actually made when it was made, and isn't a dusty artifact of a bygone era. The obvious point of reference is early Dylan at his most earnestly folky -- a no-brainer, especially given Mattson's richly gritty, slightly pinched voice and densely imagistic lyrics -- but Shallow Grave also hearkens back further to the rural sources of Dylan's inspiration, evoking the spirits of pre-war hillbilly folkers and Mississippi country bluesmen, and often more vividly than Dylan himself.
Kamelot- "Poetry For The Poisoned" LPx2 (KMG)
On their ninth studio album, Kamelot once again bring their epic sound to bear on unsuspecting ears with Poetry for the Poisoned. Like their other albums, Poetry is a kind of sweeping prog-metal symphony, taking heavy metal into the majestic and wide open spaces of classical music. While the band hasn’t done much to innovate on their sound, they certainly haven’t lost a step, delivering track after track of densely arranged power metal packed to the brim with swirling keyboards and driving guitar work. What really makes Kamelot stand out, though, is singer Roy Khan. With a background in opera, Khan’s voice is a powerful presence in the songs that’s able to stand out without overshadowing the rest of the music. Given their style of music, it’s a fine line between getting lost in the composition and overpowering everything else, and it’s a line that Khan and Kamelot walk well. Really, balance is what Kamelot is all about, adding just enough symphonic and progressive elements to make the songs interesting without turning them into academic exercises and enough power metal to ensure that the songs are heavy without letting them get too cheesy. With all of these things working in harmony, Poetry for the Poisoned makes for a welcome addition to the Kamelot discography.

Aids Wolf- "March To The Sea" LP (Skin Graft)
March to the Sea marks an ending and a beginning for the Montreal-based no wave chaos-bearers AIDS Wolf. While they've been touring as a trio for nearly a year, this set, cut in late 2009, is their final recording as a quartet with guitarist Myles Broscoe. Vocalist Chloe Lum, drummer Yannick Desranleau, and guitarists Alex Moskos and Broscoe worked with David Bryant at Montreal's In the Pines studio; the album was mastered by Weasel Walter in the U.S. Musically, the six originals here reflect a more compositionally oriented approach. This doesn't mean AIDS Wolf are much more accessible, however. Their extremities in dissonance, distortion, atonality, and shambolic playing are all a permanent part of the AIDS Wolf aesthetic. This is music as action, defiance, and provocation. But there are more discernible "song" forms present in this mix -- check the repetitive riff on "Wet Winds"; the vocal contains an actual refrain. On "Suck Is Happiness," one guitar solos while the other plays an angular, in-the-red bassline vamp. Drums offer a consistent space for Lum's vocal scree to center itself on. It's only two minutes and 13 seconds long, but feels like half an hour. Yeah, that is a good thing. The highlight of this 23-minute long "album" is its final track, a ten-minute cover of Throbbing Gristle's "Very Friendly," completely reimagined and far more aggressively delivered. This isn't an "industrial" take on the tune, it's more as if DNA met Teenage Jesus & the Jerks and performed as a group encore on the fly at a gig. (AMG)

White Hills- "S/T" LP (Thrill Jockey)
Like wandering in a dense and druggy fog, White Hills’ self-titled album is like a stoner rock beacon, hypnotically guiding the listener with layer upon layer of fuzz and reverb to some unknown destination. Recorded at Oneida’s Ocropolis studio and featuring Kid Millions on the drums, it comes as no surprise that White Hills is able to evoke the mesmerizing, Krautrock-influenced psych of Oneida’s Each One Teach One, using repetition and subtle change to slowly build the songs into Hawkwind-esque space jams. “Polvere di Stelle,” the sprawling jam that closes the album, perfectly captures the spirit of White Hills. Like the album itself, the song is always opening itself up and expanding in all directions, adding layers of atmospherics while guitar solos play off of the titanic bass riff that anchors the track to reality. The album also goes off in more esoteric, Krautrock-oriented directions on “Glacial,” where droning, almost Sunn0)))-styled tones slowly shift notes, evolving the song with a crawling pace. This is an album that eschews easy hooks and quick melodies for a more carefully layered approach to making an album. White Hills isn’t an album that’s concerned with giving the listener easily digestible singles, but is instead offering a collection of tracks that work as a complete listening experience, rewarding anyone who is willing to put in the time to consume the album in its entirety with a carefully constructed and incredibly spacy experience.
