    Canadian punk rockers Knucklehead announced today the completion of their sophomore album Hearts On Fire. The album will be released in October on Stumble Records, who also released the band’s previous album, New Black List in 2005.

    Crocodiles- "Sleep Forever" LP (Fat Possum)
    Sleep Forever‘s tone is set perfectly from the outset with opener “Mirrors”. Shoegaze tones from Crocodiles’ debut Summer of Hate have been carried over, but the song feels slightly more anthemic, as though the duo is now thinking about gazing to the heavens. Death is present in the opening line, “Something in the way you crucify me makes me smile,” and even more glaringly in the chorus, “I think I’m gonna die awhile / Hang on wood and try to smile.” Yet the punchiness of the music, which vaguely recalls the Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Head On”, gives the lyrics an oddly life affirming touch. It’s no mean feat, and “Mirrors” sets the bar considerably high for the remainder of the album.
    After “Stoned to Death”, which sounds as druggy as the title suggests, “Hollow Hollow Eyes” announces itself with a psychedelic ‘60s skulk that becomes all the more seductive in the chorus’ pronounced keyboard line. Like Summer of Hate‘s more successful psych-rock leanings, it’s nothing new, but it suggests potential. “Sleep Forever”—while displaying Crocodiles’ more polished, less fuzzy sound—still owes a debt to Spacemen 3 that is hard to ignore.

    No Age- "Everything In Between" LP+CD (Sub Pop)
    Los Angeles experimental lo-fi drum-and-guitar duo No Age are Dean Spunt and Randy Randall, ex-members of hardcore band Wives. Through assorted indie labels, No Age released limited runs of vinyl-only EPs before collecting many of those tracks for the singles collection Weirdo Rippers, issued by U.K. label FatCat in summer 2007. The record's cover pays respect to the Smell, a venue/art space they felt was partially responsible for the livelihood of both No Age and Wives. The duo is also known for its videos, performance art, and visual art, as well as curating an exhibition that included works by Devendra Banhart and others. The band moved to Sub Pop in 2008 and released its full-fledged debut album Nouns. The group's sophomore effort, Everything in Between, followed in 2010. LP is limited edition with giant booklet.

    Budos Band- "III" LP (Dapking)
    After two well-received full-lengths and an EP, Staten Island's Budos Band return with III in 2010. The group's first two recordings walked a loose tightrope line between the modern jazzed-up Afro-beat sound of Antibalas and the soulful good-time funk groove of Sugarman 3. It's also true that while they fit the Daptone label's groove-centric aesthetic, III reveals a new direction, offering the view that they are also something other. This 11-song set, recorded in 48 hours, offers a darker, more spacious tinge. Elements of psychedelic, Middle Eastern, and even Latin sounds have entered their mix, without sacrificing their dance party cachet.

    The Gaslight Anthem- "The 59 Sound: LP (Side One/Dummy)
    In 1988, Jon Bon Jovi was being interviewed by a reporter for Spin Magazine when he was asked if he was a fan of Bruce Springsteen. Bon Jovi replied "In New Jersey, if you don't like Springsteen they raise your taxes." Listening to the Gaslight Anthem's second full-length album The '59 Sound, it's pretty clear that leader Brian Fallon doesn't have to worry much about his tax bill in the Garden State. Hailing from New Brunswick, NJ, the Gaslight Anthem are that rare punk band that displays a strong and unmistakable Springsteen influence, and while Fallon's vocal resemblance to the Boss is clearly coincidental (he has more than a bit of Bruce's throaty gravity without the grit), the boys-and-girls-on-the-backstreets tone of his lyrics is not, especially when stray fragments from Springsteen's lyrics pop up in Fallon's songs (cue up "Meet Me by the River's Edge" and "High Lonesome" for evidence). If Fallon often comes off as a youthful Springsteen wannabe on The '59 Sound, he also happens to be pretty good at it; the force and sincerity of his songs roll over the occasional clunky spots, and the band brings this music across with a strength and urgency that suggests a heartland rock version of Social Distortion, with Alex Rosamila's guitars and Benny Horowitz's drumming brimming with fire and energy.     Tricky- "Mixed Race" LP (Domino)
    Recorded in Paris, where Tricky has been residing for the past two years, Mixed Race is his most passionate album to date. Musically his production work takes influences from UK, Jamaican, US, North African and French music. He sets out on his music mantra with the album’s lead off track, “Every Day,” and then proceeds through a lyrical journey with temptation, reflection, mischief and misbehavior.
    The album was produced by Tricky and features as always an array of talented singers and collaborators. Mixed Race introduces Irish-Italian Frankey Riley, as well as guest appearances from Jamaican singer Terry Lynn, Primal Scream front man Bobby Gillespie, lutist/vocalist Hakim Hamadouche, London-based vocalist Blackman and Tricky’s brother Marlon Thaws, who is the thirteenth of his fourteen siblings.

    Antlers- "Hospice" LP (Antlers)
    On Hospice, Brooklyn’s the Antlers deliver a heartbreaking concept album from the perspective of two central characters: an abusive bone cancer patient on her hospital death bed and a committed nurse who becomes attached and falls deeply in love, despite impending tragedy. Written over the course of two years by core member Peter Silberman and then enhanced with additional tracks by Darby Cicci, Michael Lerner, Justin Stivers, and Sharon Van Etten, it’s a woe-heavy record that could easily be crushed by its own weight, except for the fact that it’s delivered with such ease. The narrative (completely written out in the liners) is gripping -- full of novelesque prose, reminiscent of Lou Reed’s Berlin -- and the musical accompaniment complements Silberman’s lyrics perfectly. Music box melodies are sung in a wobbly falsetto over acoustic guitar and piano, as tinges of Radiohead (Amnesiac era) electro production add accent, waiting until the perfect moment to swell up to monumental crescendos full of keyboards, accordions, harmonicas, harps, and trumpets. Arcade Fire are an overt touchstone, as are Neutral Milk Hotel.

    The Knife- "Silent Shout: LPx2 (Mute)
    The remoteness of the Knife (aka Olof and Karin Dreijer) and the chilliness of their music makes it easy to conjure up images of the duo working in a studio that resembles the Fortress of Solitude, playing instruments carved out of ice. But if the vibrant pop of Deep Cuts was like the northern lights, then Silent Shout is a sunless, vast expanse of tundra. A much darker, more ambitious set of songs than the Knife's previous work, the album finds the Dreijers stretching their sonics and downplaying the overt poppiness of Deep Cuts and The Knife. But, while Silent Shout isn't as whimsical or immediate as the Knife has been in the past, it's just as inventive, if not more so.

    Rory Gallagher- "The BBC Recordings" CDx2 (RCA)
    The resurrected Buddha acquired the rights to much of Rory Gallagher's prime material in 1999. They began their reissue program with his first two albums, then they moved to what most hardcore fans would consider the crown jewel of the series, a double-disc collection of Gallagher's BBC sessions. Like most lead guitarists (at least those of his generation), he would often expand his music when playing live, turning in vibrant, exciting versions of his material, peppered with great guitar solos. Although it lacks the kinetic spark generated whenever a musician performs in front of a live audience, BBC Sessions is one of the finest live sets in his catalog, thanks to its crystalline fidelity, strong performances, and classy presentation. Certainly, this collection isn't for anyone that isn't already devoted to Gallagher, but for those who are, there's plenty to cherish here -- individual solos, impassioned vocals, and good liner notes. It's an excellent, worthy addition to his catalog, and it helps confirm Gallagher's gift as a blues-rock guitarist.

    Brian Eno- "Here Come The Warm Jets" CD (EG Records)
    His first solo album after leaving Roxy Music. Includes the legendary "Baby's On Fire".

    Brandon Flowers- "Flamingo" LP (Island)
    Earlier this year, the Killers decided to take some time off - but not brandon Flowers. "I don't blame them for taking a break," says the singer, 27. "But I'm always writing, and I wanted to chase these songs. I also have a fear that if I stop for a year, it might mess me up." Working mostly with Madonna producer Stuart Price and Daniel Lanois in tandem (Brendan O'Brien also produced a few cuts), Flowers has made a solo set that walks a line between the Killers New Wave rock and a more rootsy sound. Named after Flamingo Road, an off-strip Vegas street that Flowers calls his "Penny Lane," the LP features tunes about his spiritual beliefs ("Playing With Fire"), regret ("Hard Enough," with Jenny Lewis) and the seedy side of his hometown ("Welcome to Fabolous Las Vegas"). He'll support the disc with a tour in the fall and reconnect with the Killers in early 2011. "I seem to be at the age where you peak, and it freaks me out," he says. "I don't want to miss my chance." Inextricably tied to Vegas in both showmanship and ideology, Flamingo is a bombastic 10-track collection of stadium-ready songs that runs the gamut from expert pop executions and forlorn electro dirges to gospel tunes and even blues-tinged rock (read: pedal steel, and plenty of it).     Johnny Winter- "Saint & Sinners" CD (CBS)
    Johnny Winter's sixth Columbia album was also his second since his comeback from drug addiction. Its predecessor, Still Alive and Well, had been his highest charting effort. Saints & Sinners includes '50s rock & roll oldies like Chuck Berry's "Thirty Days," Larry Williams' "Bony Moronie," and Leiber & Stoller's "Riot in Cell Block #9," recent covers like the Rolling Stones' "Stray Cat Blues," and a couple of originals. (Van Morrison completists should note that the album also contains Winter's cover of Morrison's "Feedback on Highway 101," a typical bluesy groove song that Morrison recorded for his 1973 Hard Nose the Highway album but dropped. Winter's is the only released recording of the song.) Abetted by the members of the old Johnny Winter Band -- Rick Derringer, Randy Jo Hobbs, and Richard Hughes -- plus his brother Edgar Winter and Dan Hartman, Winter produced forceful hard rock focused on his searing lead guitar runs and rough-edged voice.

    Johnny Winter- "Johnny Winter And/And Live" CDx2 (BGO)
    After two late-'60s albums on Columbia, Johnny Winter hit his stride in 1970 working with Rick Derringer and the McCoys, now recruited as his sidemen and collaborators (and proving with just about every note here how far they'd gotten past "Hang on Sloopy"). In place of the bluesy focus on his first two albums, Winter extended himself into more of a rock-oriented mode here, in both his singing and his selection of material. This was hard rock with a blues edge, and had a certain commercial smoothness lacking in his earlier work. Derringer's presence on guitar and as a songwriter saw to it that Winter's blues virtuosity was balanced by perfectly placed guitar hooks, and the two guitarists complemented each other perfectly throughout as well. There wasn't a weak moment anywhere on the record, and if Johnny Winter And wasn't a huge commercial success, it was mostly because of the huge amount of competition at the time from other, equally inspired players, that kept numbers like the Winter originals "Prodigal Son" and "Guess I'll Go Away" as well as Derringer co-authored pieces such as "Look Up" from having the impact they should have had on FM radio.
    In its time, this was an enormously popular live album, especially among high-school kids just starting to discover blues-rock in the early '70s. Derived from live performances at the Fillmore East and at Pirate's World in Dania, FL, it is probably, in fairness, the best representation of Johnny Winter's sound from his prime years that one is likely to find -- the pity is that it's only about 40 minutes long, and is weighted very heavily toward Winter's covers of well-known rock & roll numbers. Considering that it was recorded along a tour promoting the Johnny Winter And album, one would expect that the band would have done a considerable number of tracks from that record, none of which are represented here. The highlights are of considerable value, however, including a searing rendition of the Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" sandwiched between some much older repertory ("Great Balls of Fire," "Long Tall Sally," "Johnny B. Goode," etc.). Except for the opener, "Good Morning Little School Girl," on which Winter and the band try to show how many notes they can hit as quickly as they can, the players generally try for something a little more subtle and interesting, and one wishes that more of what they did had used the slow blues groove they settle into on "It's My Own Fault." Their version of "Great Balls of Fire" has some of that, mostly by default (no one did the song faster than Jerry Lee Lewis anyway), and also enough energy so one doesn't even "miss" the piano one usually expects somewhere in the song; "Long Tall Sally," by contrast, kicks in on overdrive and takes off from there. But for all of the musical virtues (and obvious joy) that Winter and company bring to those standards, the most interesting cuts here are "It's My Own Fault" and Winter's own "Mean Town Blues," and one wishes that there were more such tracks here. In that regard, it might be worthwhile for someone at Sony/Legacy to do a serious vault search and see if there are surviving tapes of any other numbers recorded from the two shows (and was it just two?) that were recorded for this album (This was just done by the way).

    Weezer- "Hurley" LP+CD (Epitaph)
    Weezer return to their indie rock roots on Hurley, their first release on Epitaph and the start of a new chapter in the band’s storied career. In many ways, Weezer have always been the unlikeliest of pop bands, earning major radio and video play for leftfield singles like 'Undone' and 'Buddy Holly,' songs that hardly seem calculated to become radio hits. It is exactly this "uncalculated" quality that the band returns to on their eighth album. Hurley is as warm and embracing as the glowing smile on actor Jorge Garcia’s face that graces the cover, as ragged and endearing as fan favorite Pinkerton, as bold and hooky and open as 'Pork and Beans.' And as if that wasn’t confusing enough, Rivers Cuomo cowrites with Ryan Adams and legendary Elvis Presley writer Mac Davis ('In the Ghetto'). In other words, Hurley is in the classic tradition of the best Weezer albums, goofy and confessional and geeky and hugely singalong. Includes slipcase CD of full album.

    Mavis Staples- "You Are Not Alone" CD +LPx2 (Anti)
    Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and soul/gospel legend Mavis Staples delivers more wall-to-wall joy on her triumphant new Anti- album, You Are Not Alone (September 14), than any other release you’re likely to hear this year. Produced by fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy at Wilco’s studio The Loft, the intimate and textured production showcases the iconic singer at her most powerful and fervent. You Are Not Alone mixes traditional gospel numbers with two new songs written for Mavis by Tweedy, plus her unique interpretations of songs by Pops Staples, Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Rev. Gary Davis and Little Milton. Double vinyl version contains bonus CD included.

    Street Dogs- "S/T" LP (Hellcat)
    Mike McColgan - frontman, singer and songwriter for Boston’s beloved punk rock quintet Street Dogs - has lived the life that other bands just sing about. As the founding frontman of Dropkick Murphys, McColgan helped bring his experiences as a Gulf War combat veteran to the uncompromising, working class sound that launched that band. But in 1998, following a family tradition, McColgan left the band and music to become a Boston firefighter. Four years later, he began jamming on nights off with some old friends from the Boston punk scene; he found he needed the voice that only fronting a band could give him, and the Street Dogs were born. Now Street Dogs are ready to unleash their self-titled fifth album, the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2008 Hellcat debut State of Grace, which critics called "a raucous and purposeful working man's ride" (Dallas Morning News) with "the kind of political streak rarely heard since the Clash" (Cleveland Scene).

    Procol Harum- "Broken Barricades" CD (Salvo)
    Procol Harum squeezed the recording of their fifth album 'Broken Barricades' in between tours, as was their custom. On its release in 1971, 'Broken Barricades' further enhanced Procol's standing. Three tracks were co-written by guitarist Robin Trower, who demonstrated his frustration with the restrictions placed on his playing by the Procol sound. With Trower on fine form, writing the album's obvious choice for a single, 'Poor Mohammed', and playing some of the best guitar of his career, 'Broken Barricades' is hard rock and roll, with an accent of finely-wrought musical heaviness, occasional brass adding inflection to the group's exceptional playing. 'Broken Barricades' is also Keith Reid writing searingly direct words, Gary Brooker providing appropriately powerhouse music, singing most soulfully, and pumping his piano with abandon and BJ Wilson and Chris Copping laying down a rhythm that is always interesting and accessible. This edition adds 4 bonus tracks.

    Devil's Brigade- "S/T" CD+LP (Hellcat)
    Devil’s Brigade are an all-star punk group featuring Matt Freeman and Tim Armstrong of Rancid and DJ Bonebrake, drummer of X and the Knitters. Rancid fans have always cherished Matt’s deep punk growl on his featured songs on Rancid albums, and now Devil’s Brigade brings his singing, rockabilly-inspired bass slap, and classic punk songwriting to the fore. With Tim Armstrong’s Duane Eddy lead guitar and the rock-steady rhythm of DJ Bonebrake, Devil’s Brigade offers up twelve songs that mix equal parts Johnny Cash, the Pogues, and Sun rockabilly, in a combustible cocktail that will have fans slamming on this fall’s tour with the Street Dogs. On tracks like 'Bridge of Gold' with vocals by Armstrong, the band stretches out, adding mandolin and banjo to their sound, while 'Ride Harley Ride' features some slinky vibraphone. Guest vocals from Rancid's Lars Frederiksen.

    Seabear- "We Built A Fire" LP (Morr)
    This is the second full-length album by Iceland's Seabear. Defying its humble beginnings as the lo-fi solo project of singer/multi-instrumentalist Sindri Már Sigfússon, Seabear has morphed into a rambling experimental/indie/folk septet. Joining Sigfússon (whose unassisted musings are now released via his Sin Fang Bous moniker, which just made Rolling Stone call him the "Icelandic Beck") are Gudbjörg Hlin Gudmundsdottir, Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir, Halldór Ragnarsson, Örn Ingi Ágústsson, Kjartan Bragi Bjarnason and Sóley Stefánsdóttir -- all working in a wide range of solo-, band- (Kimono, Skakkamanage) and visual art projects in their own right. For" We Built A Fire", all members of the band had equal input in the writing process, thereby creating Seabear's first real collective album. While Sigfússon's unmistakable voice remains the centerpiece, the new joint approach is reflected in songs like "I'll Build You A Fire," where the whole band joins in on vocals. While retaining their signature simplistic and addictive naive indie-folk, the band have branched out stylistically to include elements of straight-up indie rock, intense balladry and even some country twang. There is something instantly familiar about Seabear's songs that resonates with fans and critics alike. Despite scant promotion and airplay behind their debut album release, 2007's "The Ghost That Carried Us Away" (MORR 076CD), their songs and animated videos were a social media hit generating millions of plays. It's a very Icelandic DIY setup -- their music is recorded by the band in their basement studio with its apple carton-covered walls. All artwork and videos are hand-made by Sindri's partner and band mate Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir.

    Celebrating one of the most influential hardcore albums of its decade, this Deluxe Edition re-release of Refused's 1998 record The Shape Of Punk To Come brings together the original 12-track genre-bending disc with a previously unreleased live album. Also included is a DVD featuring guitarist Kristofer Steen's 2006 documentary Refused Are Fucking Dead, as well as a host of live performances and videos from the final throws of the band's seven-year career.

    Cream- "Disraeli Gears" LP (Polydor)
    180 gram reissue on vinyl. Cream teamed up with producer Felix Pappalardi for their second album, Disraeli Gears, a move that helped push the power trio toward psychedelia and also helped give the album a thematic coherence missing from the debut. This, of course, means that Cream get further away from the pure blues improvisatory troupe they were intended to be, but it does get them to be who they truly are: a massive, innovative power trio. The blues still courses throughout Disraeli Gears — the swirling kaleidoscopic "Strange Brew" is built upon a riff lifted from Albert King — but it's filtered into saturated colors, as it is on "Sunshine of Your Love," or it's slowed down and blurred out, as it is on the ominous murk of "Tales of Brave Ulysses." It's a pure psychedelic move that's spurred along by Jack Bruce's flourishing collaboration with Pete Brown. Together, this pair steers the album away from recycled blues-rock and toward its eccentric British core, for with the fuzzy freakout "Swlabr," the music hall flourishes of "Dance the Night Away," the swinging "Take It Back," and of course, the schoolboy singalong "Mother's Lament," this is a very British record. Even so, this crossed the ocean and also became a major hit in America, because regardless of how whimsical certain segments are, Cream are still a heavy rock trio and Disraeli Gears is a quintessential heavy rock album of the '60s. Yes, its psychedelic trappings tie it forever to 1967, but the imagination of the arrangements, the strength of the compositions, and especially the force of the musicianship make this album transcend its time as well.     Colored vinyl version of Black Lips first LP from 2003. Listen to the first couple of cuts from the Black Lips' self-titled debut album and it sounds like you've uncovered yet another nuevo-garage rock band with an extra shot of punk rock attitude. All well and good, but let the album sink in and you realize these kids have a bit more up their sleeves -- the tres-wasted psychedelia of "Freakout," the creepy blues crawl of "Stone Cold" and "Down and Out," and the free-form dementia of "You're Dumb" prove these guys have been absorbing their influences from any number of less than wholesome sources. A bit like the Dwarves pre-Blood Guts & Pussy, the Black Lips are looking for something dirty, dangerous, and just plain unhealthy beneath the energetic veneer of garage punk, and on this album they don't have much trouble finding it. While the performances are often ragged to the point of near collapse, that seems to be the point much of the time, and the addled wail of singer Cole Alexander is a fine mouthpiece for this journey through the gutters of your mind. Savage and not for the squeamish, but cool stuff for folks who like their rhythm hooch in a dirty glass.

    John Mayall & Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton- "S/T" LP (Decca)
    Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton was Eric Clapton's first fully realized album as a blues guitarist — more than that, it was a seminal blues album of the 1960s, perhaps the best British blues album ever cut, and the best LP ever recorded by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Standing midway between Clapton's stint with the Yardbirds and the formation of Cream, this album featured the new guitar hero on a series of stripped-down blues standards, Mayall pieces, and one Mayall/Clapton composition, all of which had him stretching out in the idiom for the first time in the studio. This album was the culmination of a very successful year of playing with John Mayall, a fully realized blues creation, featuring sounds very close to the group's stage performances, and with no compromises. Credit has to go to producer Mike Vernon for the purity and simplicity of the record; most British producers of that era wouldn't have been able to get it recorded this way, much less released. One can hear the very direct influence of Buddy Guy and a handful of other American bluesmen in the playing. And lest anyone forget the rest of the quartet: future pop/rock superstar John McVie and drummer Hughie Flint provide a rock-hard rhythm section, and Mayall's organ playing, vocalizing, and second guitar are all of a piece with Clapton's work. His guitar naturally dominates most of this record, and he can also be heard taking his first lead vocal, but McVie and Flint are just as intense and give the tracks an extra level of steel-strung tension and power, none of which have diminished across several decades.

    Mayall's first post-Bluesbreakers album saw the man returning to his roots after the jazz/blues fusion that was Bare Wires. Blues from Laurel Canyon is a blues album, through and through. Testimony to this is the fact that there's a guitar solo only 50 seconds into the opening track. Indeed, Mayall dispersed the entire brass section for Blues from Laurel Canyon, and instead chose the solid but relatively limited backing of Mick Taylor (guitar), Colin Allen (drums), and Stephen Thompson (bass). Instantly, it is apparent that John Mayall hasn't lost his touch with the blues. "Vacation," the album's opener, reminds one exactly why this artist is so celebrated for his songwriting ability. The staggering Mick Taylor (here still in his teens) truly proves his worth as a blues guitarist, while Steve Thompson (also in his late teens) works superbly with one of the genre's most interesting drummers, Colin Allen. Blues from Laurel Canyon is as unerring as Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, and equally as musically interesting. Not only is this one of the finest John Mayall albums, it is also a highlight in the blues genus.

    Jeff Beck- "Emotion & Commotion" LP (Atco)
    When Jeff Beck last ventured into the studio it was to cut 2003’s Jeff, a deliberately modernist album steeped in electronica, to which 2010’s Emotion & Commotion almost feels like a refutation. Working with producers Steve Lipson and Trevor Horn, Beck has created an old-fashioned blues-rock-cum-prog record, balancing the sweeping vistas of a 64-piece orchestra with cool jazz-funk grooves, tarted-up Screamin' Jay Hawkins covers with a pair of Jeff Buckley tunes and a gentle reading of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Joss Stone sits in for two songs, including “I Put a Spell on You,” with jazz vocalist Imelda May and opera singer Olivia Safe taking lead on two others, but the focus remains on Beck, who is in a reserved, lyrical mood.

    Harry Belafonte- "Belafonte Sings The Blues" CD (Classics)
    After flirting with traditional African-American material in his previous albums, Belafonte, for the first time, devotes an entire album to the blues. However, of the eleven songs, only two could be classified as traditional blues: "In the Evenin' Mama" and "Cotton Fields," the latter given a five minute treatment. Belafonte would take this song on the road as part of his live act for the next decade. Of the other songs, three were covers of Ray Charles standards ("A Fool For You," "Hallelujah I Love Her So," "Mary Ann"). Another highlight is Belafonte's rendition of Billie Holiday's "God Bless the Child." Footnote: this was the first Belafonte album recorded in stereo. Recorded in 1958.

    Now on vinyl! The buzz surrounding San Antonio's Hacienda may signal a rebirth of young rock n' roll - with emphasis on the "roll". This Mexican-American quartet blends a raw yet sophisticated style of pop music with harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles and Beach Boys. In order to keep the integrity of the music, "Loud Is The Night" was largely captured live in the room with a helping hand from new friends Scott and Frank of Dr. Dog. With them they worked on existing vocal harmonies and created new ones, greatly embellishing the album. The result is a beautiful collection of songs played with integrity and soul to spare, and while the band is aware of its 60's influences, the music on "Loud is the Night" is far from derivative, and the finished product is modern pop music performed with genuineness and taste.

You know, one of the most imitated punk bands of the last 25 years, beloved by droves of loyal fans, the standard bearer in the independent music scene, among the most influential and often controversial bands of their time, the most widely traveled group around, the authors of countless hit songs. They've got a prodigious resume to be sure and an extensive catalog to back it up: 11 full-length studio albums, 2 live records, 13 EP’s, and so many 7" singles it'll give you a headache trying to remember them all. With so many odds and ends out there, Fat Mike (singer/bassist) decided it might be nice to cull the majority of their EP's into one release, 'The Longest EP'. A collection of 30 songs, 'The Longest EP' spans NOFX’s first Fat Wreck Chords release 'The PMRC Can Suck On This' to their latest, 'Cokie The Clown'. It includes 8 tracks that have never been available on CD or digitally, and 2 songs previously unreleased in any format. With an ardent and extensive fan base, NOFX’s releases are always met with great anticipation and 'The Longest EP' will be no different.     Like an earthier version of Sixpence None the Richer, the Weepies brew up a sound that’s part Lilith Fair throwback, part coffeehouse folk, and part NPR-approved pop. Be My Thrill, the duo’s third album, continues the same thread the Weepies have been spinning since their 2003 debut, with acoustic guitars and light boy/girl harmonies taking most of the spotlight.

    J.B. Lenoir- "The Parrot Sessions 1954-5" LP (Relic)
    Newcomers to his considerable legacy could be forgiven for questioning J.B. Lenoir's gender upon first hearing his rocking waxings. Lenoir's exceptionally high-pitched vocal range is a fooler, but it only adds to the singular appeal of his music. His politically charged "Eisenhower Blues" allegedly caused all sorts of nasty repercussions upon its 1954 emergence on Al Benson's Parrot logo (it was quickly pulled off the shelves and replaced with Lenoir's less controversially titled "Tax Paying Blues"). J.B. (that was his entire legal handle) fell under the spell of Blind Lemon Jefferson as a wee lad, thanks to his guitar-wielding dad. Lightnin' Hopkins and Arthur Crudup were also cited as early influences. Lenoir spent time in New Orleans before arriving in Chicago in the late '40s. Boogie grooves were integral to Lenoir's infectious routine from the get-go, although his first single for Chess in 1951, "Korea Blues," was another slice of topical commentary. From late 1951 to 1953, he waxed several dates for Joe Brown's JOB logo in the company of pianist Sunnyland Slim, drummer Alfred Wallace, and on the romping "The Mojo," saxophonist J.T. Brown. Lenoir waxed his most enduring piece, the infectious (and often-covered) "Mama Talk to Your Daughter," in 1954 for Al Benson's Parrot label. Lenoir's 1954-1955 Parrot output and 1955-1958 Checker catalog contained a raft of terrific performances, including a humorously defiant "Don't Touch My Head" (detailing his brand-new process hairdo) and "Natural Man." Lenoir's sound was unique: saxes (usually Alex Atkins and Ernest Cotton) wailed in unison behind Lenoir's boogie-driven rhythm guitar as drummer Al Galvin pounded out a rudimentary backbeat everywhere but where it customarily lays. Somehow, it all fit together.

    Humble Pie- "S/T" CD (Repertoire)
    Alternating hard-driving blues-rockers with country-folk numbers, Humble Pie neatly showcases the two sides of this band's personality on their first release for a major American label and third album overall. All of the elements are in place for the sound that would reach its studio peak with the next release, Rock On, and culminate with the classic Live at the Fillmore album. "Earth and Water Song" provides a blueprint for the acoustic guitar-based sound Peter Frampton would ride to multi-platinum success as a solo artist later in the decade. "One Eyed Trouser-Snake Rumba" and "Red Light Mama, Red Hot!" show the hard-rocking direction in which Steve Marriott would move the band after Frampton's departure the following year.

    Shit Robot- "From The Cradle To The Rave" CD (DFA)
    Everyone in the music biz seems to have a story, and Irish emigre Marcus Lambkin has a whopper; after leaving Dublin for New York in the early 90's he soon became acquainted with one James "LCD Soundsystem" Murphy, founder of the legendary DFA label and - like I need to tell you - one of the key players in the noughties emergence of dance punk and twisted disco. Despite nearly two decades of DJing (After initially using his skills as a trained cabinet maker to help build the DFA studio) From The Cradle To The Rave constitutes Lambkin's debut album under the Shit Robot pseudonym, one that he's admitted is broadly influenced by his early days attending warehouse parties on Manhattan's bohemian Lower East Side. Those interested in Murphy's will he/won't he claim to be retiring LCD Soundsystem as a vehicle will note that he contributes on both production and vocal duties, the latter being on the acid-tinged closer Triumph. He's by no means the only top drawer collaborator; Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor adds his geeky falsetto to the soulful 8-bit tones of Losing My Patience, whilst Nancy Whang's turn on the supreme kitsch of Take 'Em Up sounds like a cross between LA psych poppers The Bird And The Bee and early Pet Shop Boys. It's these moments that you sense what Lambkin is referring to when he says that From The Cradle To Rave has a "Poppy side". Happily however for the Detroit obsessed there are wide open spaces designed to facilitate their more utilitarian dancefloor nature. Opener Tuff Enuff pillages Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express - but since when the hell has that ever been a bad thing - whilst I Found Love has all the trademark leftfield finesse of Carl Craig and I Got A Feeling similarly the euphoria of classic early house. With a speed dial to kill for and his boss disapearing off into the background for a while, opportunity could be knocking belatedly for Marcus Lambkin: you assume his next outing will be less than twenty years in gestation.

    Laetetia Sadier- "The Trip" LP (Drag City)
    This is the debut album from one of the most celebrated singers of rock's recent history, LAETITIA SADIER. For as long as records are made (or at least listened to in some fashion), Sadier will forever be linked with STEREOLAB, the band she has fronted with ex-partner Tim Gane throughout the heady pre-and-post-millennial years of the past two decades. But 2009 signaled changes - Stereolab announced an indefinite hiatus and Laetitia disbanded her original solo project/band, MONADE. Fittingly, Laetitia is releasing her first "official" solo record, 'The Trip'. Throughout the album, a straightforward, carefully arranged approach expresses Laetitia's reflections (including an attempt to make sense of her sister's recent suicide) in a personal, yet public form of entertainment. Musical collaborators on the album include Rebecca Gates, Richard Swift, April March, Julien Gasc, and Emmanuel Mario.

    Roky Erickson & Okkervil River- "True Love Cast Out All Evil" LP (Anti)
    Legendary musician Roky Erickson triumphantly returns with True Love Cast Out All Evil, his first new album in fourteen years, produced by Will Sheff from Okkervil River, and featuring Will and Okkervill as Erickson’s backing band. True Love Cast Out All Evil is comprised largely of unreleased songs that Austin native Erickson wrote throughout his decades-long career – detailing with heart-breaking candor a harrowing life that has included shock treatment, imprisonment, mental illness, and irreversible loss. With a wisdom that can only be marshaled by someone who has been through all of this, Erickson also interjects the songs with love, hope, and spiritual grace. While True Love Cast Out All Evil echoes the many musical styles in which Erickson has been a participant or a pioneer – including garage-rock, lo-fi psych, heavy metal, and country-tinged Texas folk – it also moves Erickson into new territory, foregrounding his songwriting skill. In these songs, Erickson addresses his troubled history in his own words, eschewing the metaphors of earlier songs like “I Walked with a Zombie” to speak directly about hardship and the lessons learned from it. Will Sheff’s production highlights the songs while interweaving them with found-sound and archival recordings culled from Erickson’s home videos and recordings made in the Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. This is not a cynical comeback record, a lukewarm update on an established legacy – these are the best songs Roky has ever written, unreleased due to decades of personal problems.

    Motorhead- "No Remorse" CDx2 + LPx2 (Bronze)
    There have been dozens and dozens of Motörhead compilations released over the decades, but the first one remains definitive, even if it's not perfect. Released in 1984 as a gap-filler -- for Motörhead were regrouping in the wake of the bandmember shuffling that followed the odd Another Perfect Day album -- No Remorse compiled two-dozen songs across two discs (latter-day editions adding a good serving of bonus tracks, too). Many of the band's best songs to date are here, like "Ace of Spades," "Stay Clean," "Overkill," "Bomber," and "Iron Fist." There are also four new recordings that were cut exclusively for No Remorse: "Killed by Death," "Snaggletooth," "Steal Your Face," and "Locomotive." These four songs were cut by the newly instated four-piece lineup that would go on to record Orgasmatron (1986): guitarists Michael Burston and Phil Campbell, drummer Peter Gill, and of course, bassist/vocalist Lemmy. These new recordings make No Remorse more than a standard greatest-hits package, as do the number of stray recordings compiled here as well.

    Reissue of one of the greatest albums of all time (according to many people), CAPTAIN BEEFHEART's "Safe As Milk". With A&M junior popmeister Richard Perry, jack of all trades Ry Cooder, songwriting genius Russ Titelman, The Captain makes his first real shot at being legendary - and succeeds!     Porter Wagoner- "What Ain't To Be, Just Might Happen/Sings His Own" CD (Omni)
    Presented here for the very first time on CD are the late PORTER WAGONER's two greatest LPs from the early 1970's, both full of stark autobiographical moments. Most notorious of these is "The Rubber Room", a 1971 country chart hit over-brimming with pain and insanity. Other highlights abound; "If I Lose My Mind" and "Comes And Goes" both explore similar tortured terrain, while "Albert Erving" describes a broken recluse and "Be A Little Quieter" a man tormented by his ghosts. Remastered with love and care from the original RCA Victor master tapes and presented with exclusive liner notes, rare photos from Porter’s private collection and a generous clutch of extra tracks (including a rare duet with Merle Haggard). Porter Wagoner was a consummate showman, songwriter and performer who clothed the darkest jewels from the human heart in a purple sequined countrypolitan sheen. Remastered in 2010 from the original RCA Victor master tapes! 30 tracks!

    Bo Diddley- "Where It All Began" LP Chess)
    Johnny Otis and Pete Welding produced this surprisingly successful soul effort by Bo, which succeeded in reshaping his sound, not as a Sly Stewart wannabe or a lounge act covering Creedence Clearwater Revival hits. Bo at least sounds comfortable and natural doing songs like "Look At Grandma" and "Woman," and the latter is a pretty damn good song -- Bo finally emerged as a soul singer in his own right, and it worked, artistically at least. "Hey Jerome" even recalls tracks like "Say Man" in a not-unflattering light. Unfortunately, none of this mattered to the people who still cared about Bo Diddley -- they wanted the beat and the old sound, which was present here on "I've Had It Hard," and the extraordinary "Bo Diddley-itis," but not in the kind of quantity they craved.

    Rory Gallagher- "Ghost Blues/Best Of The Beat Club" DVDx2 (Eagle Vision)
    This superb two disc DVD set tells for the first time the complete and fully authorised story of Rory Gallagher. Directed by Ian Thuillier, disc one “Ghost Blues” follows Rory’s life and career from his upbringing in Cork, his early days with a showband, the brief success of Taste and then his legendary solo career leading up to his health problems in later life and tragic death at the age of just 47. There are archive interviews, both audio and visual, with Rory and contributions from many of his friends and admirers including his brother Donal, Bob Geldof, The Edge, Cameron Crowe, Slash, Ronnie Drew, Bill Wyman, band members and many more. Disc two “The Beat Club Sessions” then shows what Rory Gallagher was really all about – a magnificent live performer. Drawn from three different appearances on the German TV series “Beat Club”, this disc contains over 90 minutes of previously unreleased live performances which illustrate why he inspired so many of the musicians who pay tribute to him in “Ghost Blues”.
